The Braves, shut out in their quest for Ken Griffey Jr., are close to signing free-agent outfielder Garret Anderson to a one-year contract, according to a major-league source.
Anderson, 36, will move to the National League after spending 15 seasons with the Angels. He will fill the same role that the Braves intended for Griffey, platooning with Matt Diaz in the left field.
The Mariners also had been interested in Anderson before signing Griffey. The Angels replaced Anderson by signing free-agent outfielder Bobby Abreu for $5 million.

Tags would be interesting if they actually linked to a nested comment.
Or something a bit more specific than… whatever the hell they were doing. Is this an attempt to drive up cross traffic to other sites?

That's what I would guess
and I do like the cross-traffic feature, I think that’s a cool thing to have. That said, the execution looks like internet circa 2002. Also, all the tags up at the top in tiny text takes the fun out of tags for the offtop because they are too hard to read.
Any why are tags at the top? Tags are a secondary feature

Really, should have forked over the extra 3 large for Abreu
Money can’t be so tight for a ML team and the upgrade would be dramatic.

Abreu is TERRIBLE defensively.
Any time he spends at DH makes him more valuable.

Abreu is a much better player.
Anderson put up a good UZR last year but has been consistently 0 to -10 before that so I think it’s safe to say last year was an aberration as far as that is concerned. To boot, he had a very short run of being a good hitter and that ended about four years ago, so in GA you have an average glove at best and let’s say a -5 bat. After position adjustment you’ve got a guy whose main value is of the clubhouse chemistry variety.
Abreu is going to hit for something like 18 RAA, and it can be expected to be more moving from the ALE to the NLE. His fielding isn’t anything spectacular, but his track record suggests that his 08 was an aberration just like GA’s was. Put him down as a -10 fielder and you’ve got a guy who will be 1 – 1.5 wins better than Anderson and doesn’t need to be platooned. Even if you had to pay him 7 million he’d be a better deal.

This is a much better deal for the Braves then Griffey would have been
Anderson, suprisingly, can still play defense. He had a Carl Crawford-like 18.1 UZR/150 in left last year. That is probably a fluke, as his previous defensive scores were below average, however he has a career 3.7 UZR/150, so you can expect him to be around average with the bat.
Garret and Matt Diaz might actually make a pretty good platoon in left. They are both hackers with limited power, but the they will hit for a high average and play good defense.

At any rate that could be a league average platoon
whereas the Griffey half would have been worth 0 wins or worse
