Perez Gets Paid
Via Rosenthal:
The Mets, solidifying their starting rotation, have reached agreement with free-agent left-hander Oliver Perez on a three-year, $36 million contract, according to major-league sources. The deal, which is contingent on Perez passing a physical, will not include an option of any kind, sources said.
The news of Perez's return to the Mets, first reported by the New York Post, could trigger a domino effect with other pitchers remaining on the free-agent market.
I don't get it, Perez isn't that good.
Perez, 27, wanted a longer contract, but the Mets held firm on three years, securing him for what should be the prime of his career.
Way to play hardball.

There basically paying him on potential
Last year he was worth just 1.3 WAR or 5.8 million using FIP. There basically banking on him doubling his production from last year and sustaining it over the next 3 years. Not a very smart move from a playoff team, especially when they probably could have gotten Sheets for half of that price.

Teams sure seem scared of Ben Sheets
has anyone even mentioned him?
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
It looks like he
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
Thanks, SBN.
It looks like he has been largely ignored so far. Maybe he’s just waiting for his old pal Jack Zduriencik to clear up some cap space in Seattle.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
The Rangers are thought to be the front-runners for his services.

Or at least enough to make people think he's a shoe-in for the DL this year.

Maybe if one of our starters get injured by June
We could get a good discount on sheets as a rental.

Rumor is there's some bad news about his elbow
can’t remember where I read it but apparently there’s an ugly MRI that teams know about.

If you ever find a link to this, I'd love to read it.
It sounds plausible (there must be some “dark matter” floating around that’s playing an unseen role in the Sheets non-signing), but I haven’t heard hide nor hair of this.
Patriotism, Pepper, Professionalism
But Sheets’ last effective start of the 2008 season came on Sept. 6. In his final three starts, he worked 10-plus innings, giving up 15 hits and 10 runs. An MRI in late September revealed a tear in a muscle near his right elbow. The Brewers elected not to include him on their playoff roster.

The Rangers have examined Sheets’ medical reports, but sources said the club wants the most recent information on his torn flexor tendon.
It’s an injury the Rangers know too well. Jason Jennings lasted only six starts last season before suffering a second torn flexor tendon in nine months. In both instances — August 2007 and May 2008 — Jennings had surgery.
Also an issue with years. The Rangers want him on a one-year deal. Sheets wants two.
I seriously doubt any other team is offering him that right now.

That's the only thing I could think of that would depress his market this much
besides having ridiculous contract expectations.

This is still a better signing than the Washburn, Batista, or Silva deals.
Bad but still at least there is some upside. Plus the Mets $/win value is gonna be higher since they have a high payroll and are close to getting to the playoffs.

Actually, by tRA*, this signing is worse than all three of those on a per yearly basis.
Plugging in their tRA*s from the year prior to their contract into the WAR formula:
Wash warranted $24M over 4 years (3.5M overpay per year)
Silva warranted $30M over 4 years (4.5M overpay per year)
Batista warranted $23M over 3 years (~0.8M overpay per year)
Perez warranted less than half of what he got, $17.4M over 3 years, that’s about $5.5M over value per year, though over one less year than Silva or Wash.
Way to say the same thing I did but in four more paragraphs.

You confuse a lack of ability with a lack of caring.

I like this line
I don’t know what kind of deal Ben Sheets is angling after, or what the extent of his medical reports indicate, but given his projected FIPs, Ben Sheets only has to average 76 innings per year to match Oliver Perez in value.
