2/20/09 OFFTOP Frank Thomas is looking for a job edition

I really haven't cared enough to post this, but tomorrow night may well be the very last show I play with my current band.  Not necessarily shocking, as I went on hiatus for two years to help my wife overcome breast cancer, but I guess it holds some importance after all.  I'd love for you guys to make it, if you can.  IT'S LATE.  We headline, so we go on at 12:00 AM.  Even if you can't stay that late, I'll be there at around 8:00 or 8:30 if you want to hang out for some drinkies.

Location:   Fuel (in Pioneer Square)

Anyway, Frank Thomas can't figure out why he can't  get a job.  I'd personally love him as a platoon DH (you guys are probably going to murder me for saying that), but I'm sure he wants to play every day, which MUST make him unattractive to, well, everyone.  I remember being a huge fan of his.  Too bad he seems to be fading away slowly like no big-time player ever should.  Thoughts?

Other fodder:

Biggest childhood movie/tv crush

Corey Haim or Corey Hart?

Rush or King Crimson?

Most underrated Mariner

Biggest unfulfilled thing you've always wanted to accomplish

Sing it, brother.

I might be there, but I have old friends coming over for dinner and I don’t know how long us old people will stay awake.

Biggest childhood movie crush – none, actually. I was into musicians. I can’t think of a single movie star or tv crush.

Corey Haim or Corey Hart? Ew.

Rush or King Crimson? Neither.

Most underrated Mariner? Uh…. As I didn’t become a fan of baseball until 2003 I don’t feel qualified to answer this question.

Biggest unfulfilled thing you’ve always wanted to accomplish? Working on my own small farm.

I can see you owning a petting farm with ponies, goats, and chickens.

And then my god, they would all be so tasty.

I vote it's because of what he eats (or doesn't).

Who hasn’t heard the phrase “That [insert spicy food here] will put some hair on your chest.”?

Who knows, maybe it’ll work on the rest of his body as well.

Most underrated Mariner....

I’ve been sitting here thinking for about five minutes, and I have to go with Adrian Beltre because everybody in the media thinks he’s a bust. I can’t remember being more enamored with a player who has such a poor reputation amongst other fans and the mainstream media.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Feb 20, 2009 12:59 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

It's late and I have to think about my own question, yet I agree with you.

61/755: KGJ's homer totals, or Rosie O'Donnell's age/weight in 2019?

by kevin_ess on Feb 20, 2009 1:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I just can't think of anyone else....

There are bunch of probably (and definitely) OVERrated players in terms of fan support, like Dan Wilson, Willie Bloomquist, and Charles Gipson (and I was guilty of both the first and the third). That’s almost an easier question because you can just fire out names.

My sentimental favorite for underrated player is closer Mike Schooler who saved 30+ games in 1989 and 1990, when the Mariners had 73 and 77 wins respectively, and who I think is pretty much forgotten. Having the closer walk out to “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper was awesome.

Arguably you might be able to go with Mark Langston, for more or less the same reason: lost to the sands of time. He led the AL in K’s in 1984, ‘86, and ’87. He also won the team’s first Gold Glove in ’87.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Feb 20, 2009 1:18 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I second the Mark Langston nomination.

Leading the league in strikeouts three out of four years is quite impressive.

by FlaskInSafeco on Feb 20, 2009 7:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But he wasn't underrated, really.

He was a star… not an RJ level star, but someone like Mark Gubicza or Mike Witt or something – a guy people knew was good, but played on a shitty team. Langston also had more sustained success than either of those two….

I was just a fanboy, so I may be biased, but I just don’t remember thinking that people underestimated Langston. Hell, he and Davis were the only players anyone could name.

by marc w on Feb 20, 2009 8:33 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think those of us who are chilling on pdb's lawn only really think of Langston as

“that guy we traded for Randy Johnson who we beat in the one-game playoff in 1995.” That’s the main reason why I think he’s probably underrated as a Mariner in today’s day and age.

Goddamn I loved Charles Gipson

He always reminded me of myself. Couldn’t hit for shit, but was really good on defense (not sure if he really was, but I was young and that’s how I saw it)

I was one of those “I’m sure he could hit if you would just give him at-bats” fans with Charles Gipson.

I still remember one of the throws he made to home from the outfield.

He threw with so much force that ended up flying forward off the ground, nailing the guy at home for good measure.

But I’m a sucker for speedy outfielders.

Darrell Green of the Redskins

When he retired from football he was the fastest guy on the team with a 4.25 40

He didn’t get faster with age, OR WAS HE ON STEROIDS?!?

Have you seen Darrell Green?

He was too damn small to be on steriods. I think he was like 5’8, 170? when he left the game

He never got slower, but never got faster either. He had up and down years, I think the SLOWEST he ever ran the 40 was a 4.34, which is still fast, and the FASTEST around 4.2

I’m torn between David Bell and Stan Javier, total sucker for the quiet guys that are just there. David Bell always had that slow burn look, never seemed to say much. Frank Thomas can't get a job

because he makes Ken Griffey Jr. look like Nick Swisher

No tv crushes
No Coreys
Rush
Mike Cameron is pretty underrated as is Adrian Beltre (although he is a bit overrated at LL), Kaz Sasaki, Tom Paciorek, Alvin Davis, Randy Winn and Rupert Jones

BONUS

Most overrated:

Tino Martinez, Jeff Nelson (pretty much any non-terrible player from 95 that was worth a damn) Raul Ibanez, Ken Griffey Jr, Jim Presley, and of course Willie Broomstick (though his dad did die and make me queen).

by JI on Feb 20, 2009 1:48 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

KGJ now (by popular opinion) : over rated

KGJ in the 90’s : over rated? … educate me on this because i don’t see it

Griffey was a great was great player, but he was never in the same league as Willie Mays, and he was certainly not better than Barry Bonds was (in the 90s).

Preface by acknowledging I just turned 24

Crush : Jennifer Love Hewitt (after I Know What You Did Last Summer)
Corey : (before my time) but if I had to choose, I’d say “I’m straight”
Rush : I’ve worked with old guys who liked them
Under rated M : I grew up with a lot of praises for Omar, which seemed to disappear after he left
Accomplishment: I want to design my own house someday

by CHEAP ROUNDS AT NORM'S on Feb 20, 2009 4:10 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Hmm.

Frank Thomas: I have this irrational thought that his large (very large) bulk pushes Edgar farther away from the HOF, and so wouldn’t mind if his numbers didn’t grow.

Biggest childhood movie/tv crush: as a child all we saw were Disney movies or the afternoon tv 4-6 slot, so no crushes (and no, James McArthur in Swiss Family Robinson just doesn’t count) Shortly thereafter I discovered old movies, and all my crushes were dead. Literally.

Corey Haim or Corey Hart?: “Hi, you’ve reached the Corey hot-line. $4.95 a minute. Here are some words that rhyme with Corey: gory, story, allegory, montessori…”

Rush or King Crimson?: Rush, based on Geddy’s SCTV connection.

Most underrated Mariner: Stanley Javier, and once upon a time, Jamie Moyer.

Biggest unfulfilled thing you’ve always wanted to accomplish: Finish a book.

Biggest childhood movie/TV crush: Either Jo from Facts of Life or Daisy Duke.

Corey Haim or Corey Hart: Is there a third choice?

Rush or King Crimson? Is there a third choice? If not, I’ll go with Crimson but they’re not really a favorite.

Most Underrated Mariner: Gotta go with Langston or Schooler.

New CD yay!

Goddamn, that show is late. I’ll get to you later about whether or not I can swing it.

I’d have to say that my vote for most underrated Mariner currently on the roster is Erik Bedard. My vote is based more on the perception of him, both as a person and about his “issue” with only pitching 6 innings when fighting a sore hip and shoulder. I can’t wait for him to make everybody look like assholes when he kicks ass this year and still acts like a dick to the media

Oh man me too, I'm really hoping he breaks one off this year.

Never really watched him pitch before he came to the M’s, and really have only seen highlight films now. I can’t believe he managed to get back so fast, good for him. And the media… I really started disliking the media last year. Hopefully the new radio station fixes a lot of that.

Here's my favorite from that interview
“I really think that last year’s club had a problem with accountability…”

Others that have been asked about this stuff go into vague mentions of people playing only for themselves and not playing the game right. It’s good to hear mention from Ibanez, and Riggleman earlier, that the bigger issue was people bitching about others instead of noticing that they are a shitty pitcher, or that they are only hitting .200

by waldo rojas on Feb 20, 2009 10:14 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not even a contest.

A world were conflict/stress is resolved through non violent action is unimageable to most of the world. Think about it: hardcore sex would be in every movie, but guns and killing people would be taboo and rated X. A gun’s gun collection would be something he kept in the closet and almost never showed anyone. Freud would have wrote about our inner desire for violance and how all behavior steams from our desire for violance. Our world leaders would have to have sex before they sat in a formal meeting. Wars might not be fought, but if they were, no one would glorify them.

It would be a totally different culture. Even my quick imagining is probably way off from such a different culture.

Freud actually wrote about a basic desire for both sex and violence

although it was not so much of a basic desire for them as those being the most primal ways of releasing what he called discontent and what we mostly refer to as stress. Since neither sex nor violence, and violent sex for that matter, are mostly unavailable means of release we ‘sublimate’.

Yeah, Freud.

Biggest childhood movie/tv crush – It was more of a teenage crush, but I adored Natalie Portman from somewhere like between 1999 and 2007. Then she started dating indie rock stars, I got jealous, and got over her.

Corey Haim or Corey Hart? – No love for Corey Feldman? I’ve never heard of Corey Hart, so I have to go with Haim.

Rush or King Crimson? – I was listening to the song Tom Sawyer a lot in late-December for some reason. I don’t necessarily like them, but Rush.

It’s amazing to see the effect of (relatively) low speed collisions on a car though. A guy came by day before yesterday with his car that was t-boned in a parking lot going 15-20. The car was absolutely obliterated. He was hit on the driver’s side, and his glovebox broke from the force of the impact. When people say they were just tapped at 5 mph, they fail to remember that they are being hit by 3,500 lbs worth of 5 mph. Lot of energy getting thrown around there

That attitude will get you a lot of crap from serious Rush fans

I once tried to make a case to a hardcore Rush fan co-worker that the things Rush did/does (long, somewhat elaborate songs organized around a central conceit), Sonic Youth does as well, and does a billion times better (I didn’t make this second point overtly, because I didn’t want to bias him before he even heard it). I even made a copy of Daydream Nation for him. He listened to 15 min of it, said “this is crap” and gave it back. That’s when I gave up on hardcore Rush fans.

I can imagine a Rush fan thinking Sonic Youth is crap; the Rush fan wants something totally different from a record than I do.

Don't really come here much, but I thought these were good questions.

Biggest childhood movie/tv crush: Alyssa Milano

Rush or King Crimson? Never actually sat down and listened to KC. Did have a Rush CD when I was about 15.

Most underrated Mariner: Mike Cameron

Biggest unfulfilled thing you’ve always wanted to accomplish: Too many to name.

I turn 31 in 2 weeks, and I just now feel like I am headed in the right direction to start accomplishing something.
—Finish my BA. Which I will in the next 15 months.
—I want to work as a councilor and really help people in their lives.
—I want to write a book. (Maybe a graphic novel?)
—I want to have my photography actually put up somewhere as an art show. At least, I want my photography to be good enough that it could be displayed in such a manner.
—I want to have a kid and make them into a super scientist that either saves humanity or destroys it.
—I really want to learn Japanese and spend some time living in Japan.
—I want to tour all the MLB stadiums.
—I want to take some cooking classes and get really go at cooking fancy stuff.
There are just a ton of things to do.

Oh, and I want two at once. That is something I would like to accomplish.

He's referring to the Mariners AND the Seahawks holding titles during the same season.

I could see how that would confuse you though, it does appear outwardly to be strictly about World Series rings.

OK , I just returned from a local bar that sells nothing but awesome Belgian beer so here goes my answers...

Biggest childhood movie/tv crush – Winona Ryder, with Marisa Tomei a close second

Corey Haim or Corey Hart? Cory Feldman ala Goonies and Stand By Me

Rush or King Crimson? Rush, but only because I haven’t had any exposure to King Crimson

Most underrated Mariner: Beltre because we’re the only ones that love him

Biggest unfulfilled thing you’ve always wanted to accomplish: I would like to buy a sailboat and sail around the world after I retire from the Army, but since I don’t know shit about sailing I’m more than a little daunted by this potential undertaking. Either that or walk across the US.

I was just typing nearly the same thing. Cycle or else hike either the Appalachian Trail, or the Pacific Crest Trail.

Really close to doing the Pacific Crest from Canada to California once, big time regret not making that happen.

by Kermit. on Feb 20, 2009 12:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I'd really like to do Pacific Crest too.

I had some friends in college who really wanted to do the Appalachian. I really dont understand why anyone would do the Appalachain when the PCT exists (not to mention other awesome foreign trails). But these folks are from the East Coast and the South, so we have different definitions of “mountain.”

by FlaskInSafeco on Feb 20, 2009 12:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure you could cycle the entire Appalachian Trail

because the actual trail winds through several rivers and whatnot. But you could probably design a route that parallels it pretty close. The PCT would be awesome as long as you start on the south end and don’t have to cycle through Death Valley in the summer.

is that it’s such a popular trail for hikers that there are several small towns along the trail that will accept general-delivery mail for trail walkers. This guy had his family mail him shoes a couple times, and snack/food replenishments and other things once a week. It’s quite the system.

Question...

How does this affect the Battle for Grass Creek???

But the Reds seem to have genuine fondness for Griffey, especially the younger players like Jay Bruce, the soon-to-be-superstar center fielder that Junior took under his wing, and Joey Votto, the rising first-base talent.

“Is he going to wear 24?” Bruce asked me when he found out I was from Seattle. “That’s awesome!”

Bruce also said, “I just want the guy to be happy. He’s dealt with a lot in his career, so for him to be where he wants to be is the most important thing. If that’s frickin’ Kansas City, it doesn’t matter. I’m glad he’s in a good spot. He deserves to go where he wants to go. He’s one of the few guys in the game that does. I’m really happy for him.”

I'm a pretty casual fan and not sure I'd pay to see him

but he does tend to draw the Tom Waits-ish obsessive out of a lot of people, especially considering how infrequently he tours.

I'm with BrianL, then received I'm Your Man soundtrack as a gift.

Some of the different artists renditions of his songs really blew me away. Martha Wainwright Tower of Song is one of my favorites. Guess I started thinking of him as a terrific songwriter, and gained an appreciation of his work.

Crushes: Drew Barrymore, and Thelma from Scooby Doo
Coreys: Neither
Rush/KC: Neither
Most underrated mariner: Mike Camron
Unfulfilled: Climb Denali
Thanks for the distraction

I am no longer in Spokane, but I think I'll keep the name anyway.

I snuck out early yesterday it was so nice.

Met up with some friends for a quick 18 holes and a few beers. Never put my jacket on once. It was lovely.

I get my replacement frame Monday actually

it was supposed to be here on Wednesday of this week but some my aftermarket headset didn’t fit the replacement frame so the bike shop had to “coerce” (their words) Klein into giving me a headset that would fit the new frame. But that’s done so all that’s left is the actual build.

but I was thinking it’s been far too long since I’ve been on a golf course and I need to rectify that this year.

Yep, disc golfing. Getting schooled by a pro too.

I would toss one 250ft and feel good. He would step up and drop one 400ft and look like he didn’t try. I did hit a 100ft putt though so that was nice.

I enjoy my drive into work

I start off with a good view of the Olympics, then I get onto I-90 and can see Rainer and Baker (if it’s clear enough), then head through Bellevue and I get a nice view of the Cascades as well

I have an Excel question and I'm an Excel idiot

I have two long columns of data, and I need to know whether a value anywhere in column 2 is present anywhere in column 1. I’m sure there’s an easy formula that can do this, but I don’t know what it is and I’m bad at Excel. Any ideas?

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 20, 2009 2:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The easiest would be to run a column of "countif"s next to one of your columns.

Set the search column as your range (and make sure to use absolute cell references), then use the top most value as your criteria. Then extend the formula all the way down and sum the totals (or however you are looking to analyze it).

by abender20 on Feb 20, 2009 3:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

This is how dumb I am about Excel

and make sure to use absolute cell references

I don’t know what this means. Help?

I’m not looking to do any totaling or summing – all I want to do is, if a particular data point is in a cell in column 2 and not in column 1, indicate that somehow (Y/n, or the like) in column 3. Does this make sense?

You are the man

Column 1 – A2:A145
Column 2 – B2:B190

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 20, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

=IF(COUNTIF($B$2:$B$190,A2) > 0, "Yes", "No")

I assume you are attempting to find instances of column A in column B. Select cell C2, copy the above into the formula bar, hit enter, then double click on the little black handle on the lower right hand side of cell C2. It will automatically drop the formula down to C190. You can just go back and delete the last 45 instances, as those will be attempting to match values from empty cells in the A column.

/End OFFTOP Excel hijacking.

Thank you sir

I appreciate it.

by pdb on Feb 20, 2009 3:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, and the Yes or No will then correspond to the value on the same row in the A column.

It may behoove you to insert a row between A and B (making B →C) and slotting your formula in between.

If I'm an Excel idiot what are the odds that I can write a select query with any degree of success?

The most underrated Mariner?

Why Willie Bloomquist of course.

He had so much more grit, hustle and soul than the rest of the roster combined and all we did was let “better” players play ahead and he never got to reach his potential. He should’ve had a lot more AB and playing time he was not self centered at all and he is better than that selfish bastard known as Ichiro. He had heart too you can’t measure it but if you did Willie Bloomquist would be on the top of the list. He was never gonna reach his potential here and the Royals are giving him the chance he deserved and watch him bloom like Raul did with them and we come running back.

BOOYA! You got Slurved!

Does anybody know of a local community college that offers an online entry level database theory and concepts class?

Edmonds CC decided to move theirs from Wednesday evenings to Mondays from 11:30 to 5:30. I have to be at the office on Monday during that time.

by Thingray on Feb 20, 2009 3:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Can't say I do.

I ask because I need an entry database theory class for my transfer degree, but EDCC only offers it in the spring and at a time I can’t take it.

by BrianL on Feb 20, 2009 3:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

This entire thing is very annoying.

This class used to be accessible by people who worked during the day, but because this instructor has tenure he can do whatever the hell he wants with the schedule.

by BrianL on Feb 20, 2009 3:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bellevue CC has one going on right now.... but that's undoubtedly too late.

There’s “Database management and design” for Spring 09 at Seattle Central.

Gotta enroll in a few days, though.

by marc w on Feb 20, 2009 3:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That Seattle Central link looks promising.

I’ll forward this to my counselor and see if I can get these credits to transfer. Thanks for the help!

by BrianL on Feb 20, 2009 3:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Looks like Skagit Valley's offering

Database Design and SQL in the Spring too, if that’d be a better fit. The description is a bit more narrow than your ‘theory and concepts" search, but it’s within SVC’s Computer Information Services department, so if you need it to be from that dept., then it may be an option.

by marc w on Feb 20, 2009 3:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'll bring this one up with the counselor as well.

While SQL is significantly more useful to me, EdCC apparently wants me to focus on Access more.

I work with his wife, and he teaches computers up at EdCC.

Unfortunately this course is part of the Computer Information Systems department. Weird, I know, but they are two different entities.

You know I've yet to get a good answer from anyone.

Apparently the CompSci department is more programming/design oriented while the CIS department is more focused on administrative IT studies.

by BrianL on Feb 20, 2009 3:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I suppose it makes it easier for people to determine what classes they need to take.

There is some overlap in what classes you take for a transfer degree, but since i have no desire to be a code monkey most of my classes have been centered in the CIS program.
