Bryan LaHair: 2009 Seattle Mariner

From the always lovely Geoff Baker:

LaHair on his new "teammate" -

"It's really strange because I used to sit there dreaming of being a teammate of his when I was younger,'' LaHair said. "I mean, a lot of kids probably did that. But for me, it's actually going to happen. My brother called me and reminded me of that.''

The article also calls LaHair a "left-handed power hitter himself". Oh Bryan, when don't you disappoint?

LaHair on his new "teammate"

“I have no chance on making the team. There is literally no room for me and I am probably one of the least talented people on a 40 man roster.”

The only chance LaHair has to be Griffey’s teammate is if Griffey has to do a rehab stint in AAA.

OK yeah he's not going to spend a day on the 25 man unless things go truly badly

and he’s not really a power hitter, or much of a hitter at all for that matter. But come on, it must be amazing to be wearing the same uniform and going to the same workouts as your childhood idol and one of the all time great players of the game. I am mostly unsentimental and did not follow the Mariners closely in the Griffey days so he’s not that special to me, but even so I got a big grin reading that.

Give me one day working out and playing ball with my heroes,

and I could die a happy man. I’m sure Brian knows he’s not going to be a superstar.

But

this is coming from the guy who said earlier that he plans to compete for the starting left field job. I think that he does think he is on the 25 man.

What do you want him to say?

“I suck, I’m not going to make it.”

I would be horrified if he said he didn’t plan to compete for a job.

So, Ichiro, what are your goals for 2009?

Oh, I don’t know – collect a paycheck, eat a lot at the postgame buffet table, that’s about it really. Baseball? Oh yeah, I guess I should probably give that a shot too.

No

it’s just he comes off sounding pretentious some times is all. He shouldn’t suggest competing for the starting LF job because newsflash: he’s not a left fielder!!!! Say whatever about first base, it’s just my opinion of him is that his perception about his abilities is wrong and he acts like he is entitled on top of it. That’s just what I gather though…..
