Pineiro snubbed by team Puerto Rico
Cardinals pitcher Joel Pineiro says he is "heartbroken" and feels "disrespected" after being left off Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic team by manager Jose Oquendo -- who is also a Cardinals coach.
Oquendo first approached Pineiro about his role on Saturday. Pineiro construed the comments as a joke. But it later sunk in that Oquendo intended to use Ian Snell and Jonathan Sanchez along with Vazquez.Pineiro had already purchased tickets for his family for second-round games in Miami, where Puerto Rico will play if the team advances past the first round in San Juan. But since he won't be a starter, Pineiro said he will remain in spring training and skip the World Baseball Classic entirely.
Given the option of pitching in long relief, Piñeiro declined.
"I feel bad for my country, for the team we have had over there," he said. "I talked to most of those guys and they know I'm doing the right decision. If I wasn't going to start, why would I be there?"

What an idiot.
If I wasn’t going to start, why would I be there?
Maybe because the WBC is about the team and country and national pride and all that? It’s not just about whether you get to start or not.

It's not as if
any pitcher is going to go nine innings in March. Middle relief in the WBC is probably almost important as starting. What an idiot.
The worst part is
had he participated, he’d would have possibly forfeit his spot int he Cardinals’ rotation.

He still has that 'I'm about to cry' look.
I remember seeing it often in his postgame interviews after a typical Pineiro outing.
"We are a bad defensive team." -B. Cashman
Aaron Sele had that look as well.
61/755: KGJ's homer totals, or Rosie O'Donnell's age/weight in 2019?
Gah
At first I thought he had been left off the roster completely, which would have made me feel bad for the guy. Now he just comes off like a selfish asshole. What a selfish asshole.
Of course I just figured Snell was Australian.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
Snell does not sound Puerto Rican at all
Unless it’s pronounced Sneya

Ian Oquendo
is his real name, but I don’t know if he is related to Puerto Rico manager Jose Oqendo.
No, that was his wife's name
He took it for whatever reason. That is of course if wikipedia is to be trusted.

Eh, Pineiro was good that year
but his BABIP was ridiculously low and Sele was a good pitcher.

He had some ridiculous streak going against righthanded hitters that year.
People hadn’t figured him out yet…who knows, he may have gotten rocked, but he came into the game after Sele and Halama and gave us 2 IP 5 K only one ER…
…but yeah, anyway, I’ve put all that behind me. :l
Anyone who
wears a t-shirt with their own image is a good guy in my book.
Pro wrestlers, this one’s for you.
That story is incomplete
He said that if he is not going to start in the WBC then is better to prepare for the season with the Cardinals because working as a reliever will set him off a starter pace
...Which is why the working title for this diary was
“Kill Me Dead”
