The Battle for Grass Creek Continues

The Royals, apparently not happy with acquiring just ONE white, scrappy, former-Mariner utility infielder this offseason, have claimed Tug Hulett on waivers.

[T]he club claimed Tug Hulett on waivers from Seattle. Hulett, 25, made his big-league debut last season when he batted .224 in 49 at-bats over 30 games.

The Royals cleared space on their 40-man roster by designating left-handed reliever Neal Musser for assignment. Hulett is expected to join the Royals in time for Friday’s workout.

"He gives us some depth," general manager Dayton Moore said. "He can play second, third and a little short. And he's got two options left.

"We see him beginning the season at (Class AAA) Omaha, but I wouldn’t put limitations on him. He'll come in here and compete for a job."

I immediately regretted not taking Corco's bet on whether Tug would be picked up on waivers.

Should’ve gone for it, but then I think that it’s probably best to avoid spontaneous, possibly embarrassing bets on a blog with Robert as a regular.

IN YOUR FACE! YOU COFFEE DRINKING, BOOK READING BASTARDS!

The Royals are robbing you blind! Give it up! Just pull up your stakes from Grass Creek and try to regroup around Pullman! And leave Mike Sweeney at the Motel Six in Missoula on your way out of town. Hillman and the boys will pick him up as they drive the team bus west.

If we regroup around Pullman

First round’s on me. At Denny’s. 75 cent wells!

I love the $3 pitchers.

Or rather, I was amused by them. It’d be tough to love even free Coors.

The $4.50 Blue Moon wasn't a bad choice either

But yeah, they were definitely lacking for beer. Not a lot of places in Pullman had a selection that would even come close to pleasing this crowd, though…

The best was when my buddy bartended at that Denny’s. He’d hand out 75 cent, 16-ounce calls all night. T

What a coincidence, WE like $3 pitchers, too

in fact, we like them do much we have 2/$9M to one of them…

This vicious rivalry just keeps getting more... vicious

Dayton Moore knows what he’s doing: Miguel Olivo, Ho-Ram, Meche, Guillen, Bloomquist, Tug and probably a few guys I’m forgetting

When we acquire Raul at the deadline (that contract is perfect for Moore) as part of our pennant push, all you snobbish Mariner fans will wish your coffee was laced with arsenic.

Is the Griffey deal signed yet?

I don't think he's bad

I just think there’s dozens of Tug Huletts floating around the minors

Fair enough, but if you look

at freely-available shortstops (helpfully compiled by Mr. Dave Cameron) and at freely-available second basemen, you’ll see they average out at a much, much lower projected wOBA than Hulett.

Hulett’s CHONE/Oliver projection has him roughly 8 runs better than the 2B pool and 20 (!) runs better than the SS pool over a full season. He’s way too good to be freely available, but that’s what he was. I think you can take 10 runs back on defense at SS, but I still think he;s a solid 1 WAR player – no upside, sure – who’s treated as replacement level.

So is Dayton Moore as bad/dumb as some people around the internet think?

Or is he doing a decent job fielding a team, while he’s waiting for his minor league system to matriculate to the majors?

Seems like a lot of KC contracts come off the books in 2 years, it makes me think it’s more by design than accident.

Crap, I'm going to have to look at some of these guys's numbers later. (In a total non-analyst, common fan sort of way).

Except for the seeming bite he’s taken at veteranocity with Guillen and a couple other guys at the top of the list, a cursory look at Cot’s and 1 year contract jumps off the page. Put together some recent talks about budget (in regards to how the M’s do it), and expenditures, he might not be a complete mess. Some of these GM’s out of the Braves type system really place a premium on veteran leadership, especially with a crew of young guys (primarily placeholders?).

Like I said, I’m not an analyst, and I haven’t penciled out numbers in even the most rudimentary way yet. But I’m real interested to see how KC shapes up in a couple years.

They have a fair amount of young talent and they seem decent at developing it.

But he’s made some really awful trades and signings. He kind of reminds of Bavasi honestly; some major strengths that are overshadowed by some holy-hell-you-can’t-be-serious level weaknesses.

They've been decent at developing it... and then burying it behind

these 2 year contracts.
We’ve talked about it before, ac, but what the hell do they do with Butler/Ka’aihue? I simply don’t get the trade for Jacobs when you’ve got the two ’spects plus Gload and Shealy.

The Farnsworth thing is more oddness. KC’s pen added nearly 6 wins last year (in WPA); they were phenomenal. So… they run out and pick up a set-up man on the free agent market? Sure it’s only a two year contract, but it’s also a contract to a bad pitcher to fill a hole they don’t have. I don’t get it.

Don't worry

We’ve got one more potential salvo to fire in the Battle this year. Sexson is still available (to my knowledge).

Well he is blocking a solid prosepct

that guy Kila something with Jacobs who is pretty close to a replacement level player. However the Crisp trade and the Grienke signing have been pleasant surprises to me.
