Spring Training in Peoria
The wife and I are getting ready for a road trip down to San Diego, stopping at San Francisco, Los Angeles and the Oregon Coast along the way for vacation.
Amid the Griffey signing news, and the fact that I'd been talking about how fun Spring Training would be, I came home this evening to the fact that my wife has bought tickets for us for the Spring Training opener in Peoria against the Dodgers on 2/27
This will be the first time I've been to Arizona, much less Spring Training. I am going to go out on a limb and assume that others have had the pleasure, and so I'm looking out to the LL conglomerate to perhaps give me some insight as to what to expect.
Do the starters typically open up the ST opener? Is it mostly the kids and NRI's playing? Basically, for those who have been, was your experience fun and do you have any pointers?
Thanks for the input.

I've never been there that early
but as I recall, early on in spring you’ll likely see a starter for an inning or two, and then a parade of players…
Awesome opportunity to keep a small diary!
The first time I’ve ever done anything new, I always have that fresh perspective and ideas of what I would do different next time. Or recommend to someone else. Writing some of those ideas or what not down really helps me out on several levels.
That's a good idea...
thanks for the feedback. I’ll be sure and take lots of pictures and post them when I return.

I used to live in Florida for the Grapefruit League in High School
It’s fun. We used to get out of school and, if it was early enough, we would head over to one of the ST camps. Seeing as how within just an hour of school there were the Tigers, Phillies, Yankees, Rays (at the time) and Reds we were able to see many of the teams at least once or twice.
As for what you should expect, if there are any of the regulars playing, it’s going to be limited. They really don’t start to get much extended playing time until later on in camp, pitcher especially. But you won’t see just NRI’s at all, you’ll see a lot of guys get time.
I'm a fan of the giant lemonade, myself.
My favorite thing was to go over when the park first opened, and just stand around for an hour or two watching things like a bunch of guys doing PFP, or Edgar hitting off a tee, or batting practice
Do you know where you are staying, yet? Close to the park?
It's the Comfort Suites "Peoria Sports Complex"
I assume that’s close to the park. We’re leaving San Diego on Thursday and staying in Peoria Thursday night so we’ll be well rested and to the ballpark early. After the game, we start the trek back to Seattle.

that showed up after the last time I was there.
it is stunning how much growth there has been, between visits.
Welcome to Arizona!
That’s what they do. Did, I guess, since Phoenix is the second-biggest-declining housing market in the country. I was reading today you can actually buy houses in Mesa now for less than $100K, which (apart from then having to live in Mesa) is a pretty amazing deal considering ~2 years ago those same houses were in the mid-$250’s.
(the in-n-out’s right next to the krispy kreme. Talk about a confluence of genius.)
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
All Krispy Kreme's were closed in Phx a while ago
They expanded to soon and got into trouble. A darn shame because I used to love getting Krispy Kremes before going to see the practices.
I stayed there!
When I stayed there two years ago, that was were the minor league guys stayed.
I was in the lobby on the morning before returning home. Beltre came in to round up a bunch of the guys to make sure they got to practice on time. It was neat to see.
Bring suntan lotion.
I went to a couple of games in Peoria last year. The sun is INTENSE.
But yeah, it was a lot of fun. Don’t expect the thrill of Safeco, garlic fries or much else. Just hang out and have fun.
Seriously?
Oh man
I am pretty fair skinned so that’s the first thing I thought of. Forecast is for the mid 60’s though so at least it won’t be too hot.

AZ hasn't had their typical winter this year
it’s been above 70 most days except for the last two weeks (typically it’s in the 60’s from late Nov-Mar or so). Peoria’s supposed to be 72 tomorrow, which shouldn’t happen until about early March; I wouldn’t bet on it being any cooler than that.
Which sounds unbelievably awesome right about now.

Me too, it's not happening though
I just gave up the concept yesterday. Stupid failing economy and house that needs work.

I was offered a plane ticket and hotel room to visit Spring Training, but can't leave work.
The world sucks. It’s a small dream of mine to visit Spring Training.
61/755: KGJ's homer totals, or Rosie O'Donnell's age/weight in 2019?
That's a shame.
Spring Training is totally worth going to once. And once you go that first time, you’ll want to go back every year.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I'm using my vacation time and going next year for the very first time.
I’m really really looking forward to it.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
Hopefully next year I'll be going again
if so first beer’s on me.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I'm hoping my invitation stands for next year as well.
If so, you had better be there for beers.

I go to Spring training every year, I love it.
I used to live in Flagstaff which is only 2 hours away, and my sister lives in Scottsdale, so I’d go down eveytime I had days off from work. Since I moved I still go down and visit my family, always during spring training! There is absolutely nothing like spring training. You can see just about everything you want to- Practices, minor league games plus the regular games.
This is not a promise nor an occasion I will forget.

I like to sit in the shaded seats because of the sun.
I’m a whimp, what can I say.
we were over at Surprise on an unbelievably hot day in mid-March with seats in the sun.
We ended up standing under the overhang behind home plate, and in inning or two in, the usher re-seated us near where we were standing …
Surprise has some very nice shaded seats
I’ve gone a few times to Surprise. I love those seats above home plate, it’s a great view and it’s not that hot because your in the shade. The only problem with Surprise is it’s a pain to get to, especially from Peroria.
I went to a game at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson last year
Rockies – M’s. It was a Tuesday game so I skipped a class. The sun was intense, I got burned, which pretty damn well proved I’d been at a ballgame. Moral of the story – wear sunscreen or the professor gets pissed off.
I've been to both stadiums in Tucson
I didn’t really like either one and it seemed like there wasn’t much around the stadiums like in Phx/Peoria.
Yeah, they aren't in great areas... TEP is a nice park though
On one of my adventures to Hi Corbett I a) caught a ball in bp and b) later got it signed by Ichiro so that ballpark experience is awesome in my mind
TEP is a great park
Too bad it’ll sit empty all season after ST.

Do they not use it for the Arizona league?
Honest question, I have no idea what cities participate in that.
I don't think Tucson has any AZ league teams
I think all the AZ fall league teams are in the Phoenix area.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I can't emphasize this enough
I went to a spring training game last year and sat on the lawn with my shirt off. The next day I wondered why my neck and shoulders were so sore. Took me a day to figure it out…
Sunscreen good.
You will love it! It is super low key and very relaxed.
I don’t know how long you will be staying but try to get over to the practice fields to watch the guys. Major league on one side of the complex. As you walk down the path, you pass AAA, AA, and end up at the A team. Practice starts I think at 9am? You can go to the Mariners’ office and get a sheet with such info.
After practice go to the stadium were the worst seat in the house is still really good. The ushers are old retired folks. If you are nice and the seat is empty, you can “upgrade” all over the place. If you are sitting in someone’s seat they just ask you to move a few seats over or up or where ever! It really is low key.
For the first week, pitchers go about 2 innings. By the 6th-7th, most of the ML players take off. You might see 2 or 3 starting pitchers by the 4th inning and then bullpen guys, then NRI’s/minor L pitchers.
Besides the game there is actually a lot to do. You might want to try the sports bar there. It is right across the street. I know the players do interviews there a couple times a year. Also there are a bunch of nice restaurants. I have ran into Betancourt, Lowe, Raul, Beltre, and Lopez after the games. I never said anything cool, just a hello or a nod.
It is a lot of fun. … Granted, it is slooow, relaxing, quiet fun, like hanging out in a mildly crowded park for several hours on a sunny day. I had wanted to go for years and finally did about 4 years ago. I knew I would be going back every year I could.
You will not look at SafeCo baseball games the same way again.
Have a great time!
Spring training is awesome.
You can go to watch them practice – the big boys work on Field 1 (right behind the big stadium) and fields 2-8 are all the minor league kids. It’s really fun to wander around the complex for a couple hours watching them do drills. I believe practice starts at 9 most days, and it’s free. The opening game likely won’t be sold out, so it’s really easy to move seats if you want – but honestly the place is so small that there’s no bad seat. There’s a bit more shade on the 1B side, but not much.
Most everyone else got it right – the regulars play 3-4 innings max most days, and the pitchers throw two or three innings, then it’s Name That Mariner for the rest of the game. But even that’s a lot of fun.
There is very little shade at the ballpark, even on the aforementioned 1B side, so hats and sunscreen are pretty much mandatory. There’s a pretty good sports bar right across the street from the complex (McDuffy’s) but overall there’s not much else in Peoria – I don’t know how long you’re staying, but Scottsdale is where a lot of the good restaurants/bars are (and the Giants train there).
You will definitely have fun.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Yes, what he said
Go early and watch the practice. Grab a printout from some office off the side of the parking lot (it will be obvious. I think) of the entire minor league roster so you can tell who the kids are, wander around the various practice fields. Watch the low-A kids do their drills, watch the big leaguers take BP, watch it all. It’s great.
Abuelos across from the park was pretty good
and I saw Snelling and his cast, which dates the last time I was there.
Scottsdale is awesome.
The Giants’ stadium is probably my favorite in the Cactus League, all brick and very classy. Unfortunately, I’m leaving AZ the day of the game @ the Giants. Oh well.
I'm more like I am now than I've ever been.
I'd say Scottsdale is probably my fave too
I would say Surprise is, but Surprise is waaaay too far from anything to be a favorite. I’ve not been to the Angels’ stadium in Tempe yet but it looks pretty cool too.

Im planning a Eugene to Peoria expedition sometime in the future.
I’d like to make stops in Tahoe, maybe Yosemite? Vegas and Hoover Dam. Screw California, i’ll go through nevada.

Sad face
I was a few clicks away from buying spring training tickets for the first time in my life and driving out there, but I think a family illness is going to keep me away.
I’m jealous. I want to watch Gutierrez shag fly balls. Maybe later in March.
Okay, fact or myth?
Our first day is going to hopefully get us into southern Oregon. We say we’re doing the coast because I hear really bad things about taking I-5 directly down through oregon and california to cut over to San Francisco. Apparently near the mountains there it is really bad this time of year (near Grants Pass?)
I’ve never gone US-101 and they say it’s a really good sightseeing tour. It adds like 4 hours to the drive though. I’ll gladly take the extra time though to avoid being snowed in in the mountains.
To clarify, things that I'd like to avoid while going on this road trip.
1) Going off of a cliff propelled either by a sheet of ice or a banana peel ala Billy Madison
2) Getting stuck in traffic for ten hours between San Francisco and San Diego
3) Organ thieves

SF to San Diego in ten hours is nothing to scoff at
it’s an eight and a half hour drive without traffic, really.

We just did Tahoe ---> San Diego in 12

As long as you have more than one driver it's not too bad
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
It's not even bad with one driver provided you take some breaks

I used to have the ability to do it
That drive over I5 in January was the start of a drive to Columbia SC— now on the annual drive to Moses Lake I’m squirrelly by Cle Elum ….
I love long drives.
I once did Boise, ID to Indiana in 2 driving days by myself. About 14 hours of driving each day. The end of each day got pretty rough though, 2 drivers is more fun.

I got to me pretty good at changing the CD player without looking
…and then mp3s had to negate that skill.
hmm.
well, we went up and over in January one year and it was just fine, but that was just the one time …. Can you do the planning leaving enough time to check the NOAA site and see the weather before you go?
I see it’s supposed to be rainy in Yreka this week…
Hmmm...
I grew up on one end of the Siskiyou mountains (Rogue River) and if there is severe weather, you definitely don’t want to bother with them. If the weather is passable however (even just rainy), you should zip right through.
It gets really foggy fast.
We brought an RV home from NorCal and it lost power up at the top of the hill after Grants Pass we had to leave it overnight on the road side. it was freezing and whatnot, but we picked it up the next day and the weather was beautiful. But do take 101, you are not missing much by avoiding I-5.

If you do end up in So. OR on 101 that first night,
stay in Yachats at Overleaf Lodge.
I’ll probably sound like a shill for recommending it to everyone anytime it comes up, but seriously, it’s awesome.

UPDATE!
We did end up doing 101..thanks for the advice.
However….yeah. We won’t be going to Peoria. We just got a call and it sounds like we’re going to be adoptive parents sooner than previously thought. So we’re going to be on the first Alaska flight tomorrow morning to Seattle. Good news, of course, but no spring training for me this year :(
My loss is, of course, your potential gain! I have tickets to this Friday’s game in Peoria against the Dodgers.
