Griffey ---->Braves ??

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — Ken Griffey Jr. has chosen to sign with the Braves, according to a person close to the veteran star and familiar with the on-going negotiations. Griffey and Braves general manager Frank Wren met Monday night in Orlando. Wren and Griffey’s agent were scheduled to meet today in an effort to finalize a deal.

...

He’s expected to play primarily in left field for the Braves, probably in a platoon role right-handed hitter Matt Diaz, though Griffey could also play against some lefty pitchers.

He could also serve as a backup center fielder for the Braves, who only got 27 home runs from their outfield last season, the lowest total in the majors.

Update: Maybe not.

Both Griffey and Goldberg said a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday morning that said he had chosen the Braves, is not accurate.

Griffey said he heard about the story and sent a text message to Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik and CEO Howard Lincoln, telling them that the report was not accurate.

Agreed.

If the 2008 chemistry stories could end and stories about the 2009 team started coming out, I’d be happier.

Okay, now that I’m done laughing.

by PositivePaul on Feb 17, 2009 9:56 AM PST reply actions

What obligation did Griffey ever have to play here?

If you like Griffey so much you should be happy that he gets to play closer to his family, gets to play the field, and doesn’t drag down a team you like.

by JI on Feb 17, 2009 9:58 AM PST up reply actions

Where was an obligation implied?

Many people thought he WANTED to be here; people thought this because he said so, repeatedly and publicly. However, he clearly does not want to play here. So there we are.

by marc w on Feb 17, 2009 10:06 AM PST up reply actions

Why?

He hasn’t been here in ten years. Let him retire a Brave. I really could care less.

by tait644 on Feb 17, 2009 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

You have no clue, man...

While my head tells me I should be happy, both for the M’s and for Griffey, I’m still pissed about it. It doesn’t make sense for Atlanta.

I wanted them to sign Edmonds just to piss you off. He’d be a better fit for them than Griffey anyway.

But let’s just say I have more information on the situation than most people do and leave it at that.

I cannot handle seeing him in that uniform.

Griffey wanted to play for the Braves after the 99 season

Back then they were smart and realized that Jones for Griffey would have been a retarded trade.

by JI on Feb 17, 2009 10:03 AM PST up reply actions

Chipper or Andruw Jones?

That would’ve been sweet to have Chipper Jones playing at third, of course we wouldn’t have had Boone, Cammy, and whoever else I can’t think of at the moment.

by Fin on Feb 17, 2009 10:06 AM PST up reply actions

That is true.

But what he would lack in defense he would make up for in his switch-hitterness.

by Fin on Feb 17, 2009 10:08 AM PST up reply actions

Believe me, I love Beltre

but no question that C. Jones is way better. His defense isn’t even bad: somewhere in -5 < x < 5

I'm secretly kind of glad that the other team is Atlanta

because if Griffey signs there, my second favorite team would have three of my four favorite players growing up, and that would be pretty damn sweet

This situation, is, to me,

like others’ childhood heroes trying to sign to Anaheim or Boston.

Abreu was -52 from 2006-2008 by +/- or 27 plays worse than Griffey

it’s really hard to imagine Rivera being worse, so I’ll go with Abreu in left and move Rivera to center for maximum Jered Weaver angst

by seattlebruin on Feb 17, 2009 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

You have to look at UZR150, since Rivera didn't get much playing time.

Looks like Fangraphs says Rivera is worse, SSS over the last three seasons though.

by Eyebrows on Feb 17, 2009 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

Well Abreu was ranked in the bottom four of all the majors

(didn’t look at UZR/150 =/). I was just having a hard time imagining Rivera would be any worse than that.

by seattlebruin on Feb 17, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

Andruw

but both trades would have been retarded.

by JI on Feb 17, 2009 10:08 AM PST up reply actions

It won't be htat hard

and if he stays healthy he’ll help the Braves lose.

by JI on Feb 17, 2009 9:58 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe he'll do the chop in the outfield.

We don’t NEED to sign a veteran guy. Play the young guys and see what we have so we can move forward for next year.

Isn't this Griffey fellow a little old?

I mean, he’s been out of the league for 17 years. And he only played here for a year and a half. I don’t get all of the hooplah.

by Mariner John on Feb 17, 2009 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Well this sucks.

I know Griffey wouldn’t have a huge impact on this team offensively, but I really wanted to see him in a Mariners uniform one last season. This is as good as year as any to do it because we are not expected to make a run at the title, but just good enough to compete.

by Wilder. on Feb 17, 2009 10:29 AM PST reply actions

I don't knock him for wanting to be close to his family.

That’s an admirable trait.

Actually, I assumed that Dick Junkie has Griffey's number in his phone.

And thus, it shows up as whatever the receiver has the sender listed under. I imagined Zoinks has a sense of humor and a feeling of derision toward Junior.

Please try to consider all possible interpretations before jumping to an assumption about the poster’s reference and if you are unsure, ask a question first! It is this kind of open-mindedness that can really help improve the communication in this community and avoid misunderstandings.

Cincy, I forgave because of the family thing and he was in his prime. Chicago, he wanted a shot at contention. But by God, the stars were aligned for his return, and now he might go to fucking Atlanta.
