Hulett DFA'd; Jack Z grabs another Brewer
Tuglett has been designated for assignment, says Geoff Baker. Obviously a few of those middle infielders were going to go away, but I was surprised to see it happen before spring training.
Also of note, Zduriencik grabbed Luis Pena off waivers from the Brewers, say LaRue and others. Sounds like he's got some control problems -- he walked nearly as many as he K'd in 49.1 innings at AAA last year -- but maybe Z and Co. think they can work with him. He's a big dude, and he can definitely miss some bats.

Nice little pick up
Looks like he induces a ton of GB’s as well. Yay for K’s and GB’s!

I'd be quite surprised if Tuglett gets claimed on waivers

Huh....
I get it, but I don’t get it.
The M’s have a few middle infield possibilities now with Crabbe and Corona, but both seem better suited to 2B. Maybe Hulett does as well, but he played the plurality of his games at SS last year, and it seems like it’d be nice to have someone to plausibly push Yuni.
Hulett isn’t great shakes, but he’s still a ‘SS’ with a career OBP damn near .400. He’s been a bit old for his league, but then he’s not a prospect per se. He’s also not Mickey Lopez. Seems like the kind of guy who was clearly above replacement level.
On the plus side, Pena’s a GB pitcher who misses bats (and the strike zone)… a low risk. medium reward type of pick up. On the other hand, Pena is older than Hulett and still hasn’t had success above AA…

Ronny Cedeno is going to push Yuni at SS.
And Ronny Cedeno’s potential is >>>>> Hulett’s potential, both in the field and at the plate.

Knew I was forgetting someone.
That’s totally right, Cedeno’s potential>>>>>Hulett, and he may be a better all around SS right now than Yuni.

Yeah, but I did like Hulett's LH bat.

Odds are still incredibly high though that he doesn't get claimed on waivers and is back with the team ASAP
I don’t understand why everyone is freaking out about this- we got a nifty relief arm and odds are very high we don’t lose anything

The reaction seems to be a lot more
OMG TUGZ GONE
then “Hey, we just picked up a reliever with awesome stuff and some command problems but high upside and we dfa’d our 3rd string utility infielder who will likely clear waivers and be resigned to a minor league deal anyway”

The fact that the majority of the comments in this thread are about Hulett being gone not Pena coming?

This disappoints me a little
Hopefully if he gets claimed by somebody, he’ll get a shot to see what he can do

I like Hulett, especially after what he did in '08, but I doubt someone claims him.
Luis Pena seems really interesting. Groundballs, strikeouts and mid to upper-90’s heat. Seems to struggle with control vs. lefties. Horrible 2008 numbers, but hopefully he can rebound and turn into a Sean Green type pitcher for us.

Indirectly.
We traded Choo for Broussard, the Broussard for Hulett, and now Hulett’s spot on the roster goes to Pena.
It works out better logically if we trade Hulett somewhere. No one actually keeps track of roster spots.

Hulett was a non roster player when we got him
When he doesn’t get claimed he will continue to be a non-roster player, so I don’t follow

Unless...
you mean that the initial trade was Broussard for a PTBNL. The press release from that time doesn’t seem to agree with that.

The trade was for Tug Hulett
But Tug Hulett was not on the 40 man roster when we acquired him. He’s still not

My mistake.
My only complaint about Baseball-Reference is it would be nice if they could list when players were added or removed from the 40-man.

And we thought Zduriencik was so smart.
What a dipshit. I’m not giving this organization another dollar until they completely wipe out the front office and start fresh. I’m so sick of this.

True
Just seems to me that we have plenty of mediocre-average RP on the 40 man and we could trim that stable down first.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 16, 2009 8:19 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
There's generally going to be a lot more bullpen turnover then backup infielder turnover over the course of a season
And it seems like relievers get claimed on waivers a lot more often than backup infielders
Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Wyomingroutes.org & Washingtonhighways.org
by I'm NOT Corco on Feb 16, 2009 12:24 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah but we have ~13 RP on the 40 man
Isn’t that enough? Over 30% of the 40 man roster is used on RP who individually make very little of an impact.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 16, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It's a moot point really
The 13th reliever is about as likely to see significant playing time as the 5th middle infielder

and frankly I don't see any reliever on the 40 man right now that can be removed that has less of a shot then making the team then Tug
that we would have wanted to remove

Cesar Jimenez would be the only guy I'd consider dropping at this point
and even that’s only because of injury concerns
Tug’s just more likely to clear waivers then those relievers- that’s all it comes down to

Can they make room by putting a couple of these guys on the DL?
I was reading someplace that a couple of the pitchers coming off surgery were already having problems. I don’t know how the 40 man roster and the DL rules work in the pre-season.
