Griffey --> Atlanta?
Looks like we're not the only ones courting Junior. Atlanta is also after him, and would have to let him play OF in the National League.
Whether you're a Griffey fan or not, the fact of the matter is that somebody has to DH. It could be Wlad, Clement, or (God forbid), Johjima, but it looks as if the organization wants Clement to catch, isn't a fan of Wlad, and we really don't want Kenji DHing, so at this point, its Junior or Garret Anderson, and Junior is clearly the superior option.
Money being equal, I don't think he would choose Atlanta over Seattle, because he seems to want a storybook ending. But it could bump Junior's price up a bit.

Perfect storm for Goldberg.. It gives a lot more bargaining power.

I don't think it adds anymore bargaining power.
Griffey needs Seattle more than we need him. It may be a ploy to up his price tag, but it won’t work because GMZ holds all of the chips.
God damn it Braves
Matt Diaz, Gregor Blanco, Jeff Francouer and Brandon Jones is good enough.
Note that I’m only upset if this makes Griffey prohibitively expensive and he signs here anyway
Francouer is killing himself.
He’s where I see Chris Davis in 4 years.

They're pretty bad off in the outfield for a couple years.

Ugh
Can we just not have interest in this guy anymore? I’ve read about Griffey way too much this offseason. I’ve honestly stopped caring. Let Griffey go to Atlanta, then make a trade or sign Jim Edmonds.
Fuck Atlanta

Why do you think we have to go out and get a DH?
What’s the problem with rotating Wlad Clement Shelton Sweeney and whoever else (Carp?) through the DH slot to give at-bats to players who may be helping the team beyond this year? When we were talking about signing Abreu, it made sense because he’s a fine hitter and can be with the team next year when they might be thinking about making a serious ruin at the division. When we were talking about signing griffey for a swan song, I was also cool with it because, well everyone knows why. But if it’s not going to be Dunn, or Abreu or Griffey, why should the team necessarily go out and sign Anderson? There is no rule that says we have to replace our bad fielding lefty power bat with another bad fielding lefty power bat (which, in Anderson’s case, is just a lefty bat, forget the power).
Besides, there are players out there that can potentially be acquired through trade (starts with an ‘S’, ends with an ‘er’ and has ‘wish’ the middle). The whole idea that you have to go out and get a DH is wrong, I think. DH is the spot you put your best hitter who’s not on the field, but that should not mean that you actually go out looking for players you don’t ever want to set foot on the grass.

I don't think we should sign Anderson
I just think that’s what they would do. I forgot about Shelton, and that’s a good option. Honestly, if it were up to me, I’d just have Wlad DH most nights.

I would much rather have a guy
who, although is not a great hitter, could hit .260/.340/.450 or more with 15+ homeruns than a guy who nobody knows how well he’s gonna hit. Also, Griffey won’t cost anything other than money.
Congratulations! You're Bill Bavasi

Not at all.
I would much rather have Swisher, but I have no idea what he would cost. As for Wlad; it’s true that we don’t know how well he’ll hit next year. He still has a lot to do (i.e. Studying the strike zone, learning to hit breaking balls, etc.). Griffey is obviously not the best player that we could possibly get. But he’s a rather cheap, decent stopgap guy who would be fun to have and who is happy to sign with us.

My concern here is that the FO/Howchuck has already said "We're getting Griffey" and this is just some gay ploy to drive his price up
So regardless we get Griffey but now he costs more

Because Carp/Shelton/Sweeney/Clement/Wlad takes up a lot of roster space.
It doesn’t seem smart to advocate for your entire bench to rotate through the DH role.
Griffey come home
by .Taylor on Feb 14, 2009 2:28 PM PST up reply actions
Well...
Carp probably isn’t in the picture as of now, only one of Shelton and Sweeney will be on the roster at a time, and Wlad and Clement will both see (significant?) time in the field. I’m all for the rotating DH unless a better option presents itself. It could be argued that Griffey is a better option, but I do not believe that Anderson is.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 14, 2009 2:34 PM PST up reply actions
To me this is the best option as well
I think the rotating DH in itself has benefits as it gives young guys at bats and can help prevent injury as well. If one of those assholes pulls a Carlos Pena and tears it up you can then give that gent more playing time.
It breeds competition which certainly can’t be unhealthy.
Griffey is nice because OMG SSEATTLE LOVES GRIFFEY but Anderson brings absolutely nothing to the table

And lets be honest, even if Griffey does sign
the odds are fairly good we’ll see the Wheel of DH for a not insignificant portion of the year anyways.

GA is a ~1.5 WAR player in LF
Granted, he’s a craptastic DH (because league-average defense means nothing as a DH), but that makes GA about as valuable as Endy Chavez.
If Wakamatsu WAS going to go with having people shuffle through the DH role without a fixed DH, you would want players who aren’t complete jokes at a defensive position. GA would be a reasonable signing for that purpose, because you would still give Endy Chavez PAs as the 4th OF, and then you’d use some combo of GA/Branyan/Shelton/Wlad- 4 players, 3 positions (DH/1B/LF). Also, GA is not as much of a cripple against LHP as Junior is- his platoon splits are normal for a LHB, not the kind Griffey has, where he’s just total garbage against LHP, so he could play OF against a LHP and not be an utter joke.
Basically, Junior’s the better DH, but GA isn’t a worse player- the M’s would just need to change how they were going to approach having a DH this year.

Atlanta needs a LF and we need a DH
We can take Griffey and they can take GA.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 14, 2009 4:24 PM PST up reply actions
The idea that Garret Anderson is better against LHP is silly
over the last 3 years, Garret Anderson has a .713 OPS against left handers, with a BABiP of .318
over the last 3 years, Ken Griffey Jr. has a .689 OPS against left handers, while sporting an impressive BABiP .229 BABiP.
Even if there wasn’t a 90 point gap in BABiP there, a .024 OPS gap isn’t the difference between being an utter joke and decent.

Understood. All these platoons are goddamn confusing.

Why would they trade themselves?
Would they make Junior do a gymnastics routine for their minor league or something?
There are no good individual basketball statistics.
54!
So there is still a chance we can avoid this clusterfuck then?
Atlanta may just come off my ‘list’ which they were placed on after the HoRam trap.
I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.
I really hope they snatch him away from us
Because I believe (and this is purely conjecture on my part) that he’s not going to be content with a platoon DH position on this team if he does come here, especially after the Braves are offering him a part-time defensive position now. He’s going to want to play in the outfield sometimes which negates any usefulness he has to us.
But the Braves should want GA, though.
Realisitically, the M’s can make much better use of Griffey than the Braves can, and the reverse is true of Garret Anderson-he fits in with Atlanta’s needs better.
by eponymous_coward on Feb 14, 2009 4:07 PM PST up reply actions
That's true
But if this offer is legit and Griffey tries successfully to use it to leverage defensive playing time out of us we really can’t make better use of Griffey anymore and we should just go with GA.
One Positive Note
If the Braves sign Griffey. That’s one less team that is on on a trade for Swisher!
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Feb 14, 2009 5:22 PM PST reply actions
I never thought the Braves were stupid until now.
Griffey, one of the finest defensive center fielders in history, was slowed in 2008 by a knee injury that required postseason surgery and wide-ranging injuries have plagued him this decade. The 10-time Gold Glove winner is just a serviceable defensive player these days, but there’s no doubt Griffey can still hit right-handed pitching.
