Josh Fields --->  Mariners

Well.. It looks as if we are going to be down one pick when heading in to this years draft, according the Official Website

I am not so sure that I am a fan of this move.. Well, I am going to go out on a limb and say that I am very much not a fan of this move.

I was looking forward to this front office having an extra first round pick, but apparently the need for another bullpen arm was just too great?

Z's first not so good move!

Fire Jack Zduriencik!

Wasn't this the reason why we have so much pasta on the wall?

We have enough players tryin to stick.. Why add another one?

by seattlesundevil on Feb 13, 2009 5:20 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

If there was one thing this team needed, it was an other reliever.

I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

by EnglishMariner on Feb 13, 2009 5:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Eh.

Depends on the terms of the deal. If it’s closer to what Zduriencik was offering the whole time that’s cool with me. If not, I’d would find this move baffling.

by ThundaPC on Feb 13, 2009 5:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

$500,000

Was the entire holdup of the deal. If he took Jack’s initial $1.5 Million we wouldn’t even be talking about going to get that draft pick back.

by ThundaPC on Feb 13, 2009 5:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

So he can't be traded right?

That would be the only reason I can see to sign him but I’m pretty sure we have to keep him a year first.

by hcoguy on Feb 13, 2009 5:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

You can cheat that rule

by trading him as a PTBNL, and then sending him in a year or whatever. But I’m not sure that always works.

I thought we were involved in a trade

like that a few years ago, where one of the PTBNL was potentially ineligible due to signing rules (I think it was an international prospect?). Anyways, yeah, it doesn’t always work.

Baffling

But at least the Mariners can stick Fields at AA/AAA and let somebody else rack up the saves in the first half (or all year) then trade that guy to somebody who thinks that means anything.

by AnotherAaron on Feb 13, 2009 5:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts exactly

He could be our next trade piece in Z’s master plot.

by Ezzra on Feb 13, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Did you guys watch Fields? He's really, really good.

I understand being kind of upset, but it’s not like we’re throwing anything away. And last time I checked we don’t have a closer at the moment…a lot of arms…but no clear closer type guy. Now we do.

by SethGrandpa on Feb 13, 2009 5:40 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I have watched him.

I remember watching him when I was over in the States and the CWS was on. He was electric. But he was also facing College players, not Major League hitters. We simply don’t need any more relievers right now.

I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

by EnglishMariner on Feb 13, 2009 5:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly...

Elite relievers are hard to find. He’ll need some development time for sure, but he’s certainly got a lot of upside.

This signature space for rent.

by PositivePaul on Feb 13, 2009 6:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Right.

There’s no way Jack signs him if he’s an undesirable player in Z’s plans, regardless of money (probably).

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

by misterjonez on Feb 13, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Elite starters and elite position players are even harder to find, and both could've potentially been available at pick #21

That’s my problem with this deal. Joshua Fields’ upside is an elite closer. And we’re talking the absolute ceiling – a Papelbon or Rivera type – and personally I think he’s unlikely to touch that. More to the point, how hard is it to find elite relievers? J.J. Putz? He learned to throw a split-finger, gained control overnight and suddenly he’s a top closer. Joakim Soria? Didn’t have more than 12 innings at Single A ball before being taken in the Rule 5 draft. Jose Arredondo? Joe Nathan? Rafael Soriano?

What about guys like Kam Mickolio, Brett Lorin and Shawn Kelley? All guys with strikeout ability whom the Mariners have drafted no later than the 5th round (Lorin, and he still has potential as a starter). Mickolio was drafted in the 18th round and Kelley drafted in the 13th.

It’s really not that difficult to find a good reliever. Find a guy out of the DR or a collegiate pitcher in the lower rounds that can throw a moving fastball in the mid 90’s with at least one bendy pitch, and you’ve got your elite reliever.

by JLC on Feb 13, 2009 6:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I feel bad for associating Papelbon with Rivera

And perhaps Arredondo and Soriano with the others, though they’re the examples that immediately popped into my head.

by JLC on Feb 13, 2009 7:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bad.

There was a real possibility that Fields & Boras would blink first and accept the M’s offer, and I’m assuming that’s what happened here. It’s not like Zduriencik would refuse to sign Fields if he only cost $20, so there’s an argument to be made about taking the cheaper, sure thing right now. They put the 1.5 mil offer on the table and didn’t take it off.

Still, that 21st pick would be incredibly sweet, and I don’t like Joshua Fields as a 1st round pick or as pitcher in general.

That Griffey contract better be cheap as hell and include a Nick Johnson trade.

by JLC on Feb 13, 2009 5:43 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I Love it

Knowing the Mariners this probably affects last years budget somehow providing Jack with more cash to sign the guys he wants in the draft.
Really, with the trade of JJ and no real "closer" on this team it is not a bad decision at all. And before people say "it doesn’t make sense to spend a first round pick on a closer", teams do it all the time both thru the draft and by signing Type-A FAs. He was rated as a first round talent and it is something they need so I for one am glad they did it.

I’m sure Jack did his due diligence on this one as far as current value v. draft pick, etc.

by bilbo on Feb 13, 2009 5:48 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Somehow

Bavasi was able to construct a solid bull pen for cheap, despite failing at everything else. But then again, was it him that signed Everyday Eddie?

Here's a video of Fields:

After watching that I am even less impressed.

That breaking ball looks like it comes from the ‘EnglishMariner’ school of breaking balls.

His location does leave a bit to be desired.

He’s gonna need to refine before he hits the majors. Otherwise he’s gonna find out that he can’t throw heaters past everyone the rough way.

by Ezzra on Feb 13, 2009 7:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He has a real overhead delivery.

And one hell of a downward plane on his pitches. Something to work with.

Fans are typically idiots.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Feb 13, 2009 6:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

If he can add a split-finger to his repertoire, he could be devastating.

When I opened this thread I assumed we made a trade with the White Sox

I am completely shocked that we signed this guy. More so, I’m surprised GMZ apparently doesn’t have faith in the 52 relievers he signed this winter.

by katal on Feb 13, 2009 6:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think this is more of a long term plan than a lack of faith.

Though I admit, I doubt anybody has much faith in our relieving staff. But I suspect this signing has more to do with contending in 2010 than 2009.

by Ezzra on Feb 13, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

its not the end of the world, he throws his fastball decently; needs to locate it better though. His curve-ball can get better too. The potential’s there.

by C-Nage on Feb 13, 2009 6:32 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

At least it wasn't a 45 foot tall pic of Strasburg, or Youk's spinning head.

Anybody know if this contract goes against last years budget, I know he signed now but the offer was made last year. I don’t know how that works.

Also, if the original offer was made for 1.5, if the M’s had pulled that offer off the table do they lose the draft pick?

by Kermit. on Feb 13, 2009 6:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly, I trust in Z here.

If he thought he would get something better with the compensation pick, he wouldn’t have signed him. I agree that a 1st round pick usually isn’t needed for a reliever (especially with the glut of relievers we have), but he could be something special, and obviously Z & co. think that he can be…only time will tell.

by appleshampoo on Feb 13, 2009 6:49 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I gotta believe in Z.

I really wouldn’t be surprised to see us using him as part of a package sometime this year, especially if the M’s end up doing well and need another hitter. Fields does has quite a bit of potential regardless of what happens with, though. His fastball is on the upkeep and his release gives him a chance at a potentially wicked curve. I’m sure Z must have liked Fields more than he was letting on.

Can't trade him for a year man.

I kinda like it

We still have plenty of picks to get high upside guys. Fields is pretty safe – not as much upside, but not much risk. Plus, with JJ gone, there’s more opportunity for Fields to come in and make an immediate impact.

by saltydog75 on Feb 13, 2009 6:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Wait

So since the M’s have Josh Fields now, are they not planning on re-signing Beltre?

by Fin on Feb 13, 2009 8:44 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I was initially pretty disappointed in this move

But the more I think about it, the more it makes some sense. If either Lowe or Walker has success closing while Fields is seasoned in the minors, suddenly we have a valuable commodity to trade in July.

Additionally, aren’t having a strong defense & an elite closer two of the primary ingredients towards being a successful playoff team? Like Ezzra mentioned, this at least helps set us up for 2010.

by katal on Feb 13, 2009 10:11 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

An elite closer is way down on the list of things we would need to be an elite playoff team

That said, I don’t know what Z is thinking. Maybe he’s planning to trade him somewhere down the line or something, I just don’t see why it’s so important for us to have him when we have so many relievers already who could competently pitch out the end of games.

by OlSalty on Feb 13, 2009 10:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Or maybe he really thinks he'd be a good closer for the future

I just think the importance of having a good closer in general is blown all out of proportion and this pick would’ve been more useful to us.
