Nick Johnson wants to be traded, trying not to get hopes up
Now that Adam Dunn is the regular 1B for the Nationals, Nick Johnson's feeling left out:
WASHINGTON -- With Adam Dunn slated to become the Nationals' everyday first baseman, what does this mean for the Nick Johnson? The team will most likely look to trade Johnson, who said he will not accept a bench role.
There was talk of the Athletics having interest in Johnson after the team asked for his medical records, but a deal is not close between Oakland and Washington.
"I would rather play every day, smell the grass and run around," Johnson said via phone on Wednesday night.
So yeah, obviously I'm trying not to get overly excited about this idea, but the fit is there. Johnson, when healthy, is a phenomenal player. For his career, he rates above average at 1B with a career UZR/150 of 5.9, and his most pessimistic wOBA projection comes from Marcel at .374, which is pretty much what Abreu has to offer.
The injury history is old news at this point, but Nick Johnson missing a fair chunk of playing time still works out quite well for us, since it allows us to give Clement/Wlad/Prospect more ABs.
Gimme gimme gimme gimme.
Edit: In my excitement, I forgot to post a link.

What's the point of putting "when healthy" when a guy is never healthy..

Well, presumably he's healthy now.
And it’s not like a broken leg is a commonly reoccurring injury, like ACL tears. Your alternative option is to sign the other frequently injured DH, who isn’t nearly as phenomenal when healthy, but comes with plenty of warm, fuzzy memories from the ’90s.
But the broken leg isn't what kept him out last year, JLC.
The leg obliterated his entire 2007, but seems to be healed. No, the problem that took him out in 2008 was a torn tendon sheath in his wrist, an injury that apparently happened when he was swinging a bat. It’s supposedly healed now, but THAT is definitely the sort of injury that can reoccur.

Let's sign him, too.
We could platoon him with Chavez in left.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
I'm shocked the nationals haven't snatched him up yet.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
I actually really like...
the lineup with Johnson and Griffey if we could do that under the budget.
Ichiro RF
Lopez 2B
Johnson 1B
Beltre 3B
Griffey/Balentein DH
Branyan/Chavez LF
Gutierrez CF
Clement C
Betancourt SS
Cedeno Ut IF
Chavez OF
Balentein OF/DH
Johjima C
With our pitching staff, I think that is a competitive team in the West.
I'm hoping Cedeno can beat Yuni for the SS job....

You think the Nationals would be interested in playing him at 2B?

Guzman had a .369 wOBA in 2007 and a .341 wOBA last year. He's forecast for .326 by CHONE and .341 by Marcel.
Also his UZR was -2.1 last year, compared to Yuni’s -13.3…he’s had better defense and wOBAs the last two years, and is forecast to continue being better than Guzman. I can’t see why they’d bench Guzman for Yuni.

Forecast to continue doing better than Yuni, my bad.

Not gonna happen.
Salaries don’t match. Has to be a deal where we don’t add salary, and Washington doesn’t add salary.
I still say Washburn + cash for Johnson. Boom. Hell, you can even sign Griffey for a million still.

That's a good deal as well.
But if we got Johnson, I’d say to hell with Griffey. I think we have a good OF setup while Branyan and Johnson would split time at 1B and DH.
That's what I was thinking as well
Washburn’s a good match for RFK, their outfield (assuming they field a competent one) and the Nats have been pursuing a back-end starter for a while now (most recently Glavine). Bowden seems like a royal pain in the ass to deal with, though.
RFK? They haven't played there since 2007.
And their outfield defense doesn’t look like it’ll be all that great, especially if Kearns is out of a job.
I do like the idea of a Wash-Johnson swap though and it seems very feasible.
You could do it that way...
because of injuries but he is a pretty slick defender when he is on the field.

Just curious.
I am not at all trying to sound condescending, but is this an example of rosterbation?
This is mild rosterbation
Roster construction, so long as it’s not full blown, is tolerable. When it gets into treatises on 3-team trades with no plausibility whatsoever, then I’d say that’s full blown rosterbation.
Besides, this type of fanpost kinda begs for trade speculation. I felt the need to post it because holy shit I want me some Nick Johnson.
