M's sign international FA Jochy Ogando
As linked by Scrupio in the Wednesday Chatter comment thread. $275,000 bonus. I know nothing about Ogando, but I know a lot about Carlos Silva, and none of it's good, so in that regard Ogando probably isn't the worst pitcher ever. And we took him away from the Angels, which kind of makes up for the Angels taking a homer away from Richie Sexson, only potentially way better, and probably way worse.

Nifty.
Big kid, low 90s FB, bit of a thrower, not much in the way of secondaries, but he has a good name, and therefore I can irrationally root for him. Just like Jetsy Extrano and Westlonder Marcelino.

Also is the link broken?
it goes to a story about Jacob Beltre, a catching prospect the Padres have just signed.
Fuck Anaheim.
It's at the bottom
May be Insider-only.

Yeah it's insider only
Not a lot mentioned about him, more of a short blurb at the end of the Jacob Beltre article than anything in depth, in case people without insider were curious.
I've decided to call him Gnochi.
Easier to remember.

I read it as Hochee, as in ho ho ho.
Although whochee would be more fun.
I can see a big star having the name Ogando.
This was a good signing.
Don't these things always seem to work out in hindsight?
I can’t think of a single superstar athlete that has a name that would make you think, ordinary person.
Christy Mathewson.
She was ugly, but she sure could pitch…

George Kenneth
But if we’re being more serious: Frank Thomas, Randy Johnson, Ervin Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, and Paul Molitor?
...and now I'm here
DeForrest Kelley had a killer crossover, and made money playing street ball before the whole Star Trek gig came along.
And Debbie Gibson practically invented mixed martial arts.
There was a good article on ESPN
about the man who is trying to get Vietnam more into baseball. Its in their OTL stuff.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
There are a lot of stories like that going around.
I’ll have to look that particular one up though. I don’t think I’ve seen a Vietnamese team play in the regional Asian tournaments. The Thai are a presence there though, which kind of surprised me.

Well yeah, I've some Cambodian friends who were refugees and their stories are frightening.
There are just so many people this guy is screwing over, not the least of which is his own wife and children.
Yeah, fuck them right in the ear!

I hope that Robert links to this in 30 years time when Ogando is being inducted into Cooperstown.

Technically you could make this proclamation about just about everyone prospect.
And almost every time you’d right. But that’s no fun and it’s nothing more than a completely wild guess.
There's...
nothing wrong with stockpiling these guys, although the top-dollar pitching signings don’t seem to have born much fruit the last few years. Between Chia-An Huang, Miguel Marquez, Doug Salinas, and Valdivia, that’s a lot of dollars for some pretty poor returns.
Huang would have been great if his life hadn't been so fucked up.
