Tony Blengino mentions tRA, Graham, LL On Air

This weeks interview with Tony Blengino on Shannon Drayer's 'Hot Stove League' program was awesome.

For the 'Stat of the Week', he explained FIP, including explaining the formula for calculating it.  After that he discussed how there are now 'even more advanced pitching stats out there, which break down the results of the at bat further, by batted ball type' (grounders, fly balls, line drives), and gave some stats on what was the BABIP on different batted ball types.  Then he menioned tRA, invented by Graham at LL.  Awesome!  It seemed like he was almost going to start rattling off the formula on the air, but then he stopped himself. :)

I just love that our teams Assistant GM is a huge stat nerd.  And the fact that they have a research department who is continuing to develop new stats, to use to help give the Mariners an advantage over other teams, is incredible.

Sounds awesome.

I’ll definitely listen as soon as it’s up.

"There are people who are trying to take FIP to the next level"

“And I’m going to give the folks at Lookout Landing some props here. One of the Lookout Landing guys, Graham, has this tRA stat, which goes beyond just assuming that a certain percentage of flyballs are going to leave the park. He goes into the type of batted ball and the batting average of each type of ball in play. And I’ll give you some more fun numbers….Last year on ground balls, batters hit .233 when they hit the ball on the ground. Last year when major league batters hit flyballs, (not line drives and these are only flyballs that stay in the ballpark) they hit .139. On line drives they hit .725. Now of course you’ve gotta decide where a line drive ends and a flyball begins when you make these judgements, but that’s kind of the next tier….”

Then he finishes by saying that tRA better explains why a groundball pitcher like Tom Glavine is more successful than FIP alone would suggest because he generates a lot of weak contact.

I was going to mention something similar.

We went from a Front Office that was practically clueless when it came to advanced statistics to a Front Office that even aware of (and understands?) tRA.

This is just nuts.

Let's take a trip down memory lane!

First the goods news, from Because This Needs A Thread:

For the Mariners to wind up with Manny Ramirez to play left field, the Giants would get Richie Sexson to play first base and the Red Sox would get reliever J.J. Putz, and center field prospect Adam Jones, among others. Seattle would, under one scenario, also land starting pitcher Noah Lowry.

And then the bad news, from It’s True(?)

Comments!
Fuck this
there’s no way I can root for the Ms with this.

 KILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
BAVASSSIIIIIII FUCK THIS

my ass hurts
can someone please pull Bavasi Dick out of my ass

Oh fuck.

And then of course “The Trade Heard Round the World” from Ho. Ly. Balls.

The Washington Nationals took a major step toward freeing room on their future payroll and breaking loose a logjam in the middle infield, agreeing to trade second baseman Jose Vidro…to the Seattle Mariners for…Chris Snelling, a 25-year-old outfielder with a history of injuries, and Emiliano Fruto, a 22-year-old right-handed reliever with an exceptional changeup, in exchange for Vidro.

This is followed up by My Hands Are Shaking. and I’m Trying To Rationalize This But I Can’t.

And now we’re suicidal(from all three threads):
Kill me now.

Pulls trigger

I JUST KICKED SOMETHING AND KILLJED IT !!!!!

BOMB SAFECO FIEL DNOW

I ran into Bavasi this past summer
while strolling through Green Lake. I struck up a conversation with him. It was a jovial one, since he had just released Everett.

Needless to say, I regret not killing him on the spot.

if you want too see a grown man cry….
stop by my house.

I actually cried
wow… Bavasi I take back anything nice I ever said about you. To think I defended him against most unkowing fans who thought Gilick was a saint.

Fuck you Bavasi. I hope someone makes you a amputee

Reading that last one Matthew said:

"LL interview curse
it’s working it’s way upwards. Quick! remove the link to the Adam Jones interview. "

Totally called it.

Yeah, I picked up on that too.

When Blengino said he was going to give the LL guys a nod, it sounds like you can hear Rizzs sighs.

Edgar love

My favorite part of the interview was Tango talking about Edgar Martinez’ case for making the Hall of Fame. I sort of expect a current M’s Asst. GM to defend Edgar’s chances…but Tony is the first person I’ve heard suggest that Edgar deserves to be a first-ballot unanimous selection to the Hall. Wow. Tony said he’d done a comparison based on outs and it puts Edgar ahead of guys like Pete Rose. I wish he’d been more specific and I hope he’s sending his spreadsheet to everyone who has a vote.

I loves me some Edgar.

"I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this 'outs' stat."

I think they may have interpreted him as thinking there is some advanced sabermetric stat on outs. When he just means – I’m gonna talk about an out, and how terrible it is.

I appreciate how the front office wants to educate fans about advanced stats.

They could easily slide into the “we’re smarter than you and you’ll never understand how much smarter we are” side of things like the megalomaniacs discussed in the recent off topic fanpost. The winning and the attitude really helps the casual fans accept what they are doing as being beneficial instead of the more typical burn-the-Sabrwitches-at-the-stake reaction.

And just dropping the basics into normal conversation without any production is nice.

It’s like sending a person into a room full of people and instruct him to cough intermittently, pretty soon a significant number of people will be doing the same thing.
