c.500 PAs each of the last 2 seasons
Who knew? Not I. At only 31, he must be serviceable but… where? Griffey platoon & 11 pitchers?
Nicht verstanden.
How much money are we sending them?
we win if it’s anything less than like $14M, right?
Oh never mind, I'm retarded
for some reason, I thought Bradley had one less year left than Silva

Agreed about the not going too crazy thing
but this isn’t the first time it’s been mentioned. This rumor has been around for a while. This is the first reliable and “it’s happening” sort of mention though.
by Aaron Campeau on Dec 18, 2009 9:36 AM PST via mobile reply actions
Jinkies!
That’d be quite a move. Wonder how much money’s moving…. it’s possible that it’s zero, which would make this pretty much the most amazing thing ever.
How could the Cubs possibly do that, though?
Silva is owed like $4-5M more than Bradley, and Bradley is pretty clearly the superior player

They hate Bradley in Chicago.
He’s been a cancer in their locker room. So, who knows? We’ll have to wait and see.

So you're saying Zduriencik didn't get 100% of what he asked for?
Huh. OK. Let me know how that works out for you.
While this is amazing, I find the Lee trade to be more amazing since pretty much everybody would like to have Cliff Lee
Milton was perhaps my favorite player as an Athletic
To see that the Mariners appear to have shed Silva for him quite literally made me jump out of my chair and yelp.
It feels like Christmas morning
how sweet it is to be an M’s fan right now.
Did you fall in love with Miguel Batista? And he rejected you?
I can totally see why the Cubs would do this
I have quite a few friends in Chicago, and they all blame Bradley for the badness of the last Cubs season. It’s not logical, but they never want to see him again.
Yeah Chicago fans are just full of hate for Milton Bradley
and now they’ve got Carlos Silva! So let’s see how that works out for them
Bradley is blocking them from making other moves, and no other clubs have shown interest that wouldn't cost them lots money and thus ability to sign a replacement
And the last thing they wanted was to keep him for next season.
This is just kinda trading one asshole for another, isn't it? But at least Bradley can contribute.
no lead is safe.

There was a fair chance we were going to cut Silva if this didn't happen
Instead we get a talented player who we can also cut if he sucks/is bad.
I care less about the asshole part, and more about the sucks/is bad part.

Is Bradley really that much of an asshole?
It seems it was just a reaction to the spotlight in Chicago.
In Texas, though, a similar market and situation to Seattle,
I don’t remember him having many issues at all.
He just needs to be treated with care.
Getting him into a quiet market could help. There are virtually no expectations here thanks to the nature of this trade and his coming off a “bad” year, and columnists aren’t going to lay into him if he goes on a cold streak. And I trust Wak and Griffey to get him onboard the happy train.
It’s interesting, if nothing else. I don’t think he’s volatile enough to ruin the clubhouse. He’ll be dropped if he becomes a problem.
Ron Washington wanted him back last year
""I ain’t never had a problem with Milton because I was always honest with him," Washington said. “If I didn’t like what he was doing, I let him know. I didn’t let anything fester with Milton. All Milton wants is people to tell him the truth, to be honest with him. He’s no dummy. He knows when he’s [screwing] up.”"

Fangraphs
Bill James projects Bradley to be a 3.0 WAR
Our offense just jumped to about 23 WAR; not bad
Blow it up! BLOW IT SKY HIGH!
He's probably going to DH so the positional adjustment will bring that down
But considering Silva was completely useless that’s maybe 2 WAR for nothing.
And the '20' assumption included someone else at DH who you're subtracting
So bring it down another 1 WAR.
Well I shouldn't say he's only going to DH
He probably plays LF a bit too while Saunders gets the hang of things.
Even in the best scenario, though, his ABs replace someone else's
And their contribution still needs to be subtracted
Yes, but also the money that would have gone to signing that person can be used in wins elsewhere
Assuming this didn’t cost us anything/very much.
Well, a portion of those ABs will be Griffey's.
So you wouldn’t have to subtract much there.
by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 18, 2009 10:00 AM PST up reply actions
We were essentially replacement level at DH as it was
Between Carp and Griffey, so you don’t really have to do much to see the value here.

Can someone Smarter than me tell me how this affects the roster?
I assume Bradley is the DH and Saunders is the LF. You have Langerhans as the 4th OF. A bench of Hannahan, Hall, Griffey and a back up C. That’s 14 players which would mean an 11 man staff (which is cool if true). However, we really are missing a backup SS. I don’t trust Jack Wilson’s health enough to go with Hannahan and Hall as the two backup options. Are those two good enough defensively to play 20+ games there?
If this move is true I feel like one of either Saunders or Langerhans has to go. Especially since Bradley is an average LF. I know Saunders can be in Tacoma another year, so that’s a possibility. He also has trade value, and Bradley + Langerhans can probably hold down LF until Ackley is ready. But if we decide to keep Saunders on the 25 man roster and get rid of Langerhans, what happens? Was his contract guaranteed? I have a hard time believing they signed him without knowing the Bradley thing was coming.
We still have Josh Wilson stashed in Tacoma
And we still have room in our budget to make some other moves.
by spikefriedman on Dec 18, 2009 9:54 AM PST up reply actions
That's all well and good
But I worry more about Jack Wilson missing 2 games here and 3 games there. Where he doesn’t go on the DL, making it hard to bring up Josh Wilson.
I'm quite confident Hannahan can be a competent shortstop
Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Wyomingroutes.org & Washingtonhighways.org
what?
Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Wyomingroutes.org & Washingtonhighways.org
I don't think he'd be good or even average defensively at SS
but is there a chance he could at least play competently enough to fill in every now and then?
Pretty much
I could run him out there once every couple of weeks, and expect him to not completely embarrass himself, but counting on him to back up SS is not something I’d want to do. Scarily, I’m totally in favor of Figgins/Josh Wilson in that scenario.
by seattlebruin on Dec 18, 2009 10:26 AM PST up reply actions
Then Hannahan plays SS
That’s what he’s there for.
I'm just not confident in his ability to play 20+ games there over the year
I could be wrong though, he could be an average to slightly below defender there.
If he sucks it up and its more then 5 games.
DL Wilson bring up other Wilson.
by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 18, 2009 10:09 AM PST up reply actions
That's really his upside at SS defense though, is average
which would be totally awesome, since we know he’s non-embarrassing at 2B and pretty good at 1B/3B. But do you really want someone with an upside of average defensively who is likely not that good to be your primary backup SS for a guy who gets hurt a lot?
by seattlebruin on Dec 18, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions
This actually adds to the budget according to Cot's Contracts.
Silva is owed $11.5 in both 2010 and 2011. Bradley is owed $9 in 2010 and $12 in 2011.

Larry disagrees
“There is no immediate word if the Mariners will send money in the deal to make up any of the $4 million difference. I doubt it. The Cubs were pretty desperate to move Bradley and might have had to release him if they couldn’t.”

So glad to see Silva gone, and to get someone with actual talent in return? I’ve not doubted GMZ, but even after the Lee trade I would never expect anyone to take on Silva willingly. Bradley can be a cancer, but I think some Griffey tickles will fix that. Or maybe Bradley will stab him..
Griffey is the reason this works
Because he can be a mentor to Bradley and keep Bradley from going ballistic. Another plus is that Bradley is always tradable
I would say that Bradley is not always able to be traded
Considering that the Cubs were so desperate to move him and were considering cutting him because nobody showed interest

How would people feel about
Trading Brandon Morrow for Matt Gamel? I know it’s come up before, but Rosenthall speculated they might be looking to revisit the deal (much the same way they did in this deal, which is AMAZING). According to a source of his we are trying to trade Morrow for a corner infielder.
Bradley ruins teams everywhere he goes
Put me in the skeptical category. Cubs have been trying to dump him going back to last year. Maybe being arounf Griffey will help, but he’d be also taking away someof griffey’s ABs. And likely step in the way of saunders development. Now we are trying to trade morrow for acorner infielder? Is it me or are we selling out the young talent for one big run in 2010?

He didn't do himself any favors with the Rangers
For all the talk about him being a great hitter, he was basically a loafer who would decide to be in the line-up whenever he felt like it.
Granted he was probably protecting himself for a big contract, but he made some quotes last off-season about not giving his all with the Rangers, because the Rangers weren’t seriously about signing him long-term (which is a crock of shit; our owner was broke). Kinda rubbed some people the wrong way.
But you all have him for two years. He’ll bitch about not getting enough playing time in the outfield and hurt himself somehow.
Don’t get me wrong. He’ll be a highly-valuable asset. But you’re foolish if you don’t expect some baggage

Rosenthal & Morosi yesterday
“At least three teams remain interested in Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley — the Rays, Rangers and Mariners. However, no trade is close, according to major-league sources.
The Rays and Cubs have been at an impasse for weeks, with neither side willing to budge on the terms of a proposed Bradley-for-Pat Burrell exchange. The Rangers, one source said, remain a "longshot" for Bradley, who would fit well in their lineup, but did not leave on the best of terms after the 2007 season.
The Mariners, meanwhile, might be an even bigger longshot — the team, after making positive news with its signing of free-agent third baseman Chone Figgins and trade for left-hander Cliff Lee, likely would balk at adding a player as controversial as Bradley. "
Trading Silva for Bradley is postive news in my eyes.

The idea was that they’d just cut him and eat the salary… so unless they had to pay 100% of Burrell’s AND Bradley’s salaries, I still don’t see why Burrell+cash is worse than what they did.
I love what they did!

Say it with me: Washington Capitals. Capitals.

We sent 6mil to Cubs
Heyman says 6mil, Paul Sullivan of Chicago Tribune says it’s 6 mil as well after offsetting of the salaries.
Did they say when we were sending it?
Was it $3 and $3 each year, or just $6 million up front?

Hmm, so that's really just a $3.5 million raise in 2010 Payroll.
Bradley being owed $9 million this year, and Silva being owed $11.5. So now we’re paying $15 million for Silva’s old roster spot…still leaves us with plenty of cash, and makes more sense to do it this year actually with Bradley’s raising contract in 2011

Whoa, I didn't realize quite how valuable he was in 2008.
I knew he had a .423 wOBA, but I didn’t realize that translated to 4.5 wins even after the DH positional adjustment.
Ya he was quite a stud.
Is that park adjusted though?
