Fan appreciation at Safeco for Jack Zduriencik.

To follow up on the comment here.  If you love Jack, read on...

UPDATE - Only one hour into this and already you have pledged $95!  Thank you all!

UPDATE II - $140 already!  At this rate we'll have enough for a bronze statue!

UPDATE III - Lisa has kindly set up a paypal account to donate to, click here to make a donation, we are already at $150!!!

UPDATE IV - We are around $250 now!

Star-divide

So we have had a positive response to the initial idea, thank you for that.  I want to keep the momentum up which is why I have started a new post.  To make this work we require:

1) Interest [I believe we have this]

2) Resources [I have a plan for this]

3) Commitment [This is where you come in...]

I believe the interest is real for something to show our appreciation of the man that has helped make our sporting lives more enjoyable.  Sec108 has kindly offered to potentially enquire about having a sign up in his section for the season which is featured on the broadcasts.  What we need next is:

  • Ideas for what kind of sign or tribute we should have [My suggestion was 'In Jack We Trust' with sexy Jack's head in the background, but I am sure you can think of something better]
  • Authorisation from the club to have this up for the season
  • Costing of whatever we decide to order
  • Money
  • Production and deployment/maintenance of the sign

Depending on what we choose I can't see it costing too much.

My idea for collecting money will be a bucket at the USSM event next month.  If the 275 in attendance all pledge $1, then we should have our costs covered. Does anyone else have suggestions for this?

We'll also need someone local to co-ordinate and lead all of this [I'd love to do it but I don't feel like making calls to Seattle on my mobile].  Maybe one of our younger members would like to step up here?  You'd be surprised how something simple like this can help pad out your CV.

Here is a picture of the banner that gave me the initial idea:

To get the ball rolling I will pledge $50 towards production of the sign, and I will pay the money by bank transfer to whoever organises this when payment for the sign is due.

So I am pretty sure I can get this done at $9/sqft.

For a 10′ × 2.5′ sign that is $225. We will need someone to create the artwork as I am a printer but not a designer.

I can handle talking to the Mariners about getting the sign up and making sure it is left alone by maintenance crews between games.

by Sec 108 on Dec 17, 2009 1:03 PM PST reply actions

You'll pay the $50 by bank transfer to whoever organizes it you say . . .

But seriously, I think this is a wonderful idea. I can’t easily be involved in organizing it, but I would contribute some funding.

by FlaskInSafeco on Dec 17, 2009 1:04 PM PST reply actions

Count me in for $10 as well

and count me more in the “In Jack We Trust” camp than the “Thank you Jack” camp, just because Thank You is very fleeting and In Jack We Trust implies more permanence.

So people don’t think we’re talking about Jack Wilson

I would say just on one side, but that's a minor design quibble

I hope some people with more graphical talents than I would put up a few designs that we could vote on.

I don't think mixing text and graphics like that is very effective though

especially for the once-a-year-baseball-game-goer, who would look at that picture and say “who’s that dude”? At least a text banner saying “In Jack We Trust” would resonate because Jack Z’s name is in the media pretty regularly.

Too many syllables

The lyrical flow and meter of “In Jack We Trust” or “In Z We Trust” is a much more preferable form than “In GMZ We Trust” or “In Zduriencik We Trust”. It flows off the tongue better, it looks less awkward in print, and it’s much easier for people to remember and get their heads around. Which then makes it more likely to catch on.

In Jack We Trust

With something that looks like a coin w/a profile of GMZ. If the slogan sounds like what’s on money, why not make the artwork look like money?

My first inclination is no

I don’t know why that’s my inclination, it just seems unnecessary. I wouldn’t be surprised if the M’s might have an issue with it, as well, because at that point it crosses over from fandom into advertising, but that’s a question for 108’s ticket rep I think.

I would like it better if it just said "In Z We Trust"

Think of who’s going to be seeing it, and from where – small print might not work so well, for TV shots or for people over by third base who are looking across the diamond at it.

by pdb on Dec 18, 2009 1:09 PM PST up reply actions

by RunningFool on Dec 18, 2009 1:47 PM PST reply actions

I just don't think the second line is necessary

it doesn’t add anything, and I still maintain that if the banner is hanging right behind Ichiro, someone looking at it from the third deck behind home plate will see

IN Z WE TRUST
  *************

by pdb on Dec 18, 2009 1:49 PM PST up reply actions

I'm fine with someone seeing stars...

I don’t think the second line takes away anything, and can add clarification for the casual fan. If someone sees
IN Z WE TRUST
*************
Then if they know who Z is they won’t care what the *s are.

But I agree with the making-a-poll idea.

by RunningFool on Dec 18, 2009 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

Devil's advocate!

I don’t think the second line takes away anything, and can add clarification for the casual fan

The sign isn’t an educational opportunity, though, it’s a simple expression of trust and thanks. I’m not sure how much more clear it needs to be than “In Z (or In Jack, whatever) We Trust”. Never underestimate the power of simplicity when it comes to messages like this – overexposition kills the visual impact.

by pdb on Dec 18, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

If we were trying to educate people I'd be all about more text

but think of this banner as basically the inside of a giant Hallmark card. You don’t want a story, you want one line that sums up people’s feelings. And chances are, a majority of the people watching the game – either on TV or at the park – have at least a nodding familiarity with the “names” behind the players, so “In Z (or In Jack) We Trust” will resonate with enough people that further elaboration isn’t really necessary.

Wow, that was a lot of words to argue for fewer words. Viva English!

by pdb on Dec 18, 2009 2:08 PM PST up reply actions

Also good to keep in mind that the bottom part will be obscured by the outfield wall

from many vantage points. One line of large text is really the best way to go.

by Sec 108 on Dec 18, 2009 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

I have often argued for less text, so yeah, I think you're right.

But I won’t budge on the Z (not Jack). Ja. Wilson is one of my favorite guys, but I don’t want this sign to be confused with him.

Remember the dimensions of the sign and its intent

And the inspiration for the whole thing. 10′ × 2.5′ does not give a lot of space for artistic subtlety and nuance, and if most people will see it from far away the burst thing will get lost.

And 108’s price was based on printing in one color, as well. Let’s try to keep it simple.

As far as fonting goes, you probably want to take a cue from the DOT

and use something from the same family as highway signage and the like. Stuff designed to be clearly readable from long distances away.

If we decide to use a face this one will work best so far for that part.

The copy is too thin and light though. The font needs to be many strokes bolder and a solid dark color for readability.

Exactly.

It’s really… classy, and I like it a lot on my computer screen, but it would seemingly be just too dim on, say, a billboard or something.

It like minus the check mark and the stars.

It looks like a cheap political yard sign. I’m a political consultant, so I’ve seen a bunch.
