The OT 12/16

So as the year winds down and the excitement of the Cliff Lee trade settles, we look forward to our various holiday celebrations to give each other a pat on the back for making it through another year. Let's use this opportunity to either reflect on 2009 or look forward to 2010. I choose to look ahead rather than look in the past.

What I am looking forward to in 2010:

Turning 21
Graduating college
The subsequent summer road trip to Las Vegas
Summer concerts
The Chevy Volt (and other plug in electric cars coming out in that year)
Iron Man 2
The Mariners
UW Football

Anyone got a list of what they are looking forward to in 2010?

Also, anyone know the best brick and mortar place to sell back video games? I want to sell some of my Wii games I never play anymore quickly, but GameStop use their monopsony power to rip off gamers, so I am looking for some alternatives. I realize ebay/amazon might be the best solution, but that takes too much time and shipping costs.

To what do I have to look forward, you ask?

Mountain Operations school in January, followed by search and rescue team tryouts a month later.
Mariners-related activities, including FanFest for my son’s birthday (Cliff Lee following King Felix!?! FUCK YEAH!).
Hiking about the Pasayten Wilderness with wife and kids all summer long.
Turning 30 (Yeah, I’m excited!)
Building my 20-foot climbing wall and the obstacle course that’ll probably proceed it in the backyard!

Say it with me: Washington Capitals. Capitals.

Just for future reference the general OT practice

is to post a new one when the old one either drops off the list or hits ~1000 posts, so this may have been a bit premature. No need to act on that info, just file it away for next time. Anyway…

ANSWERS

What am I looking forward to in 2010?
 - Doing three century rides in three months – Reach the Beach, BikeMS, and the Portland Century.
 - Going to my cousin’s wedding at Lake Tahoe, after which a pilgrimage to Anderson Valley Brewing on the drive home.
 - Attempting to watch every single match of the World Cup, like I did in 2006
 - Lots of things that site rules here do not allow me to discuss

Last minute throw-in!

We were going to fly to Reno like we usually do, but then we decided to drive and stop at Crater Lake on the way down since the mrs. has never been. Then it became “oh let’s drive back through Napa” which then became “BOONVILE IS KINDA SORTA ON THE WAY HOME BETWEEN NAPA AND OREGON IF YOU TAKE THE LONG WAY” so we’re making a long driving vacation out of it.

That's the whole point

we’re really looking forward to this trip, I haven’t been on a driving vacation in years and this is the perfect time to do it – it’s at the end of July so the road to Crater Lake will be open, and my wife’s never been to Napa or anywhere in northern CA, so it’ll be a good time all the way around.

by pdb on Dec 16, 2009 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that sounds good.

I try to drive wherever i go on vacations because I have a huge fear of flying. The only times I’ll fly is if it’s straight back to the East Coast, but if I’m visiting my Dad in Illinois, I’ll drive

The one thing in 2010 that immediatly stick out is the potental Sasquatch! lineup.

Pavement (!) is already a sure thing and the following artists have released an album recently or are releasing one in 2010, haven’t appeared in a few years, or make a ton of sense:

The Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, Pearl Jam, Tegan and Sara, The Thermals, M.I.A., Minus the Bear, The Antlers, Blue Scholars…and that’s just who I can think of off the top of my head…

Things that I'm looking forward to in 2010:

*Season Tickets for the Sounders
*I suddenly got really excited for baseball today. Earliest that I’ve been excited for baseball since the Cirillo trade.
*Away trip down to Salt Lake with the rest of ECS.
*Heading up to Vancouver for Hockey’s medal round of the Olympics.
*Assorted other road trips that I’ve tossed around in my head.
*Sleeping in a real bed for more than 4 times in an entire year.
*Hopefully leaving radio shack for a real person job.

Well this is indeed a peculiar yet awesome thing

I was just waiting for an elevator in my building, and the door to one of the four available elevators opened up. Inside the elevator was a table, behind which sat the COO of my company, on which there were a whole array of Christmas cookies, fudge, and other Christmasy snacks. The COO said “Merry Christmas” and asked those of us waiting for the elevator to help ourselves to whatever we wanted, and then poured us some hot chocolate or egg nog. Then the elevator closed and he went on to another floor. This will apparently be going on all afternoon. I may never leave the elevator lobby.

Sure, but this is vacation. Why do I keep going to the same sad city?

It just doesn’t do anything for me. I’m over gambling, I find strip clubs incredibly depressing and last time I ate at a buffet I nearly died.

What’s funny is my friend hates it too and is bringing his PlayStation 3 and a bunch of beer. “Thank God we came all the way out here! This is the life!”

Oh well. Free time share. I’ll get over it. Sorry for the LLLJ.

I just found the first season to be overly juvenile without any real biting humor (although I love ""An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig"), and Mr. Hankey was so unfunny that it put me off.

The only people who would see this poll would be people who go to ESPN, and therefore have some interest in sports. I can understand a large number of people who don’t like sports not having a clue who Zduriencik is but the subset of sports-interested people in the state of Washington? A little terrible.

What’s also kind of funny is that 13% of Ohio thought he was Cincinnati’s new head football coach. Clearly they’re not paying attention either.

30-60 days off after graduation (some of which will be in WA)
4-5 months of job-specific training (Ft. Knox)
Then either go to my U.S. Post which I choose in early Feb. (hopefully Ft. Lewis or maybe Hawaii… not sure if I can get the latter) or straight to deployment… most likely a few months at the least at Ft. Lewis though in early 2011.

-Opening Day, as it is likely the only game I’ll be able to actually go to. :(

Showing our appreciation for Jack.

I love Jack Zduriencik. He may be the most important individual in this organisation along with Felix and Ichiro. I think it would be nice if we could show Jack how much he means to us fans.

My soccer team, Manchester City, has been bought by a wealthy individual who has invested hundreds of millions of pounds into our future. He has re-energised the whole club. To show our appreciation, hundreds of fans donated to a permanent banner that says ‘Thank you, Sheik’ that is on display in a prominent location in our ground. Our owner has commented about how touched he felt when he first saw this sign.

If all the M’s fans here that love Jack donated $5 for something similar, I think it would be really cool. Jack has done so much for us and it is the least we can do to show our appreciation. A picture of Jack’s wonderful head with something like “In Jack We Trust” would be pretty cool I think.

Is anybody interested in supporting this?

by EnglishMariner on Dec 17, 2009 2:29 AM PST reply actions

No permission needed to do it once, but to leave it up I need to talk to my ticket rep.

Have the community come up with what it should say and I’ll talk to them once we button that up. It helps to be able to show them what we want up.

Count me in, as long as it's something tasteful.

I really respect the hell out of this guy, it’s funny how you can read studies about sports teams affecting a persons morale, etc, and think since you’re in the know you’re above that. Then ’08 happens, followed by ’09 and you realize.

Pedro wants you to know that with runners on base, League has an 8.44 ERA.

Naturally that ERA drops considerably with no one on base, leading one to the obvious conclusion that League can’t handle pressure and does not at all imply that runners are probably more likely to score when they’re on base.

Fun Facts!

- Using the same retarded stat, Brandon Morrow’s ERA with runners on is only about .7 different.
- Brandon Morrow had an ERA of 15.00 when the bases were loaded. League’s was only 11.
- With the RISP, League had an ERA of 9.49. Morrows? 10.31.

And I quote from Pedro’s twitter:

Morrow for League, worst trade of Jack’s career. 8.44 ERA with runners on last year, League and Petit will bring back memories of Ayala

These are the types of comments that lead me to believe he’s one giant joke that went too far, because no one – not even people that suck at analysis – don’t check the other player before making random, outrageous statements.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 23, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Has anyone mentioned Petit since he was picked up?

It probably has happened, but assuming Petit will be doing anything for this club come April seems silly when Vargas, Olson, and Fister are the only ones really being mentioned by the front office in the papers.

since one of my favorite 5 albums of the 1980’s was released. If you consider yourself a music fan and you do not own this album, I have to command you to buy it now. My love for the Replacements is well documented, here and elsewhere, but damn if this album wasn’t one of the finer records of 1984, a year that, as the article says, had some KILLER music in it.

I feel as though I know you well enough and that there is enough mutual respect for me to say this:

I don’t get it. I don’t understand the Replacements revered place in punk history. I’ve tried. Oh lord have I tried/

I guess it’s just one of them things.

by Aaron Campeau on Dec 17, 2009 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

I know a few people that share this opinion actually

The only way I can explain it is if you like slightly (sometimes extremely) drunken power pop the Replacements can’t be beat. I think a lot of their legacy comes from their live shows – sometimes fantastic, sometimes trainwreckish, but you always knew you were in for something epic one way of the other.

Is it petty to hope that Jack Wilson has a true Jack Wilson year ...

not because of his value to the team, and because he seems a decent guy, but because of how it will make various Times commentors feel?

We all know the good blogs and the bad ones, and incessantly pounding on people and blogs that have the temerity to think (or not think) differently gets old really fast and doesn’t do anything to advance the point of view that we are trying to get across.

Speaking of Afghanistan (And hoping to avoid politics)

This Documentary looks amazing.

http://battleforheartsandminds.com/

On July 2nd, 2009, four thousand US Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade launched a major helicopter assault into a Taliban stronghold in the Helmand River Valley in southern Afghanistan in order to break a military stalemate with the insurgent group. Independent filmmaker Danfung Dennis was embedded with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Company, as they were dropped 18 km behind enemy lines to seize a key bridge. Within a few hours of landing, fierce fighting erupted and continued for the next three days, during which Lance Corporal Charles Sharp, from Adairsville, Georgia was shot and killed by a Taliban fighter.

Bring a Cliff Lee poster every day, regardless of whether's he's pitching.

I can just imagine some interleague game in July with Fister on the mound, and some guy screaming into the opposing team’s dugout that we do, in fact, have Cliff Lee.

I would so do this if I had season tickets.

I say we all get t-shirts with Cliff Lee’s face emblazoned on them with something like “Yes, Cliff Lee is, in fact, a Mariner!” running underneath. Then we all agree to where that shirt to every game we, as LL’ers, attend.

Something smells fishy

32GB 3GS iPhones for $8? that can’t be legit, can it?

by pdb on Dec 17, 2009 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

Each bid only raises the price by 1 cent too

You’d pretty much have to sit there bidding for days while the price went all the way up to something reasonable

by OlSalty on Dec 17, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

That's crazy

So you can lose a bunch of money for nothing?

by OlSalty on Dec 17, 2009 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

So that's the catch.

You have to buy bids in packs of at least 40, which adds at least $25 to the cost of anything. And if every bid costs .60 and each auction is bidded pretty heavily, you’ll need to spend $25 or $50 just in bidding with no guarantee of winning. This sounds SWEET.

by pdb on Dec 17, 2009 1:27 PM PST up reply actions

So here is some math.

If that imac sold for $45 – It accumalted 4500 bids at 60 cents a bid.

So the company actually sold the imac for $2700.

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 17, 2009 1:27 PM PST up reply actions

It's not gambling, though

Auctions are not considered gambling in the eyes of the law.

by pdb on Dec 17, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

It's not gambling, its 'Entertainment Shopping'

The auctions reset to 20 seconds if someone makes a bid at the end. So it’s always last minute! It’s exciting!

My God I think this company looks to be wildly successful, even assuming that some of the .60 per bid goes to company whose product is being bid on.

by Gihyou on Dec 17, 2009 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

Right but it kind of falls in that territory when you have to pay per bid though

Because you’re kind of gambling the money you spend per bid on the chance of getting something super cheap. Maybe that’s not technically gambling but the fact that you can walk away losing a lot of money for nothing…..It all just seems sketchy to me, I dunno.

by OlSalty on Dec 17, 2009 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not saying it's not sketchy because it's definitely that

but I don’t think it’s technically illegal in the gambling sense.

by pdb on Dec 17, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

You have to buy bids in packs of 40

you can’t just pay .60 per bid a la carte. So you’ve spent $25 just to get started, with no guarantees, and if it’s a busy auction you’ll burn through your 40 bids in no time.

by pdb on Dec 17, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

Still stand by my point though, that Rivera posted good results over a one-year sample, and that helped his team, even if he’s unlikely to repeat it.

Today is the most exciting day of the whole Christmas season. Today is the day that the Santa Set is released! The guys at Sound Opinions, an excellent music podcast even when it’s not Santa Set day, have a friend named Andy Cirzan whose hobby is collecting bizarre Christmas songs. It started as a goof, he’d find weird stuff and throw it on tapes for his friends, but over the years he’s started diving deeper into Christmas-music weirdness, and made this a full-time hobby. The Sound Opinions guys put him on their show every year at Christmas and he brings a mixtape (well, mix-bunch-of-mp3-files, I guess) of the best stuff he’s found over the last year. It’s always fantastic, sometimes beyond bizarre but definitely worth a listen.

You can download your very own copy (for a limited time) here. And trust me, if you like strange, bizarre and hysterically-funny-in-a WTF-way things, this is not to be missed.

w/r/t: The latest celebrity death.

We will only have more and more of these celebrity deaths in the years to come. With the internet, and the explosion of media we create “celebrity” at a much higher rate now then ever before. So we will have more and more actors, musicians, sports stars, and other people who were in the spot light suddenly die.

Not that it makes it better, because this actor was young and could have done a great deal more in life and gave some joy to people via her work. But for me at least, by thinking about it this way, I don’t start getting freaked out thinking America is cursed or something.

Okay, I turn to you guys for an answer I can't find online.

I have never had a trainer and know nothing about muscle building. My gym has like… 6 different ways you can work your chests, including a standard bench press, and machines for incline press, wide chest press, and a few others – all machines from the same manufacturer, just all different machines. For the hell of it I was doing all of them, because they were all different machines, but recently I’ve been guessing I’m just wasting my time? I mean, if they all work the same muscles (which I think they do) then doing all 6 won’t really do anything because it would be like doing 18 sets of a single workout. But I can’t find anything to verify this. I have time, so if I did get something out of doing all 6 in one day then I’ll keep doing it, but if it’s pointless I’m going to just do one or two.

Anyone know the answer?

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 22, 2009 1:14 AM PST reply actions

So just use one? Two?

And if so, which one(s)? Also, do bodybuilders do them all on the same day, or do they pick one on each day depending on where they are… I dunno, lacking or whatever?

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 22, 2009 2:54 AM PST up reply actions

Does your gym have any fitness instructors?

I’ve been going to the gym for years but over the past six months I have been using a personal trainer, and it has been very useful. For a new starter with lots of questions I couldn’t recommend one highly enough.

by EnglishMariner on Dec 22, 2009 5:13 AM PST up reply actions

They do, but they have them from 9-5.

I go like… post midnight. They’re all gone. I’m the only one at the gym.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 22, 2009 4:08 PM PST up reply actions

If you do the bench press you really don't need the incline press

I would focus on either the bench or the incline press, the lat pulldown, and the one that I can’t remember the name of that you sit in, put your arms in at a 45 degree angle (with your upper arms parallel to your legs and your forearms raised), and pull your arms in towards your chest. Those three machines will work the main muscles of your upper body plenty. After you get bored with those three, use the other three for a while – boredom is a workout-killer so it’s good to rotate stuff around every now and again.

Your suspicion is largely correct – it’s not technically a waste of time to do all six machines, because you’re getting a great workout, but unless you want a massive upper body and little skinny legs, it’s not necessary either.

by pdb on Dec 22, 2009 6:56 AM PST up reply actions

Doing all 6 I have noticed minimal growth or strength gains, which was another reason for my suspician.

But sure, I’ll stick to 2/3 and save some time. Maybe it will even help because I can do more weight. Thanks.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 22, 2009 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

And the key thing to remember with any workout regimen

it’s better to do lesser weight with correct form than to do heavy weight with poor form. The lat pulldown machine is a great example of this – that exercise should be done sitting virtually still as you pull the bar down. A lot of guys rack up some massive amount of weight on that machine and then have to lean very far back as they pull the bar down, which not only defeats the purpose of the exercise (isolation of the muscle in order to build it) but also leads to all sorts of back problems and stuff. So, no matter what weight you are comfortable at, make sure you don’t up that number until you can do so with correct form.

I normally couldn't give less of a damn about team owners, team ownership and all its backroom foibles

but if Arsenal’s new American soon-to-be-majority-shareholder-and-likely-owner pisses off Arsene Wenger I will be very, very unhappy. There’s no need for a team with several World Cup-eligible players to do an international tour this coming summer – the players involved in the WC need a break – and if Kroenke pushes this through it could be bad for Arsene’s long-term coaching future at Arsenal.

by pdb on Dec 22, 2009 3:31 PM PST reply actions

But if he bitches one more time about the fixture schedule

I’d like to offer:

Liverpool at Villa 12/29

by Kirsten Schlewitz on Dec 23, 2009 9:21 AM PST up reply actions

Arsene's bitching about the fixture schedule is as predictable as the sun coming up

it happens all the time, he does it at least twice a month and it’s best to just tune it out. Between that and his invariable claims that he doesn’t see any controversial call that went against an Arsenal player, it’s quite entertaining to listen to him sometimes.

I may be the only Arsenal fan in this country that never wants Arsenal to do a preseason tour here; Arsene knows what the modern player is capable of and how to fine tune their pre-season preparation, and a trip halfway around the world for five days for what is basically a money-grab would be a bad idea. Especially in a World Cup year.

For a billion dollar company, facebook makes the most bizarrre decisions I've ever seen.

Apparently they decided to take away the hide feature from wall posts, so that if you post on someone else’s wall, it shows up on the news feed. Why did they take it away? They won’t say. In fact, according to their FAQ, it’s still there, which it clearly isn’t. I can’t even fathom how this company thought it would be a good idea. It would be like if AT&T decided that, for fun, it would put all of its users text messages online without asking anyone, associated with the names of those that wrote them.

I mean… these decisions are just so mind bogglingly retarded that it’s hurting my brain to try to think of any reason that they would have even remotely thought it was a good idea. What the fuck is wrong with them. How do people this stupid get so wealthy?

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 23, 2009 3:29 AM PST reply actions

Because nobody stops using it when stupid decisions like this get made

Facebook grows by about 10-15% a month. They’re the 8 million pound gorilla in the social networking room. They pretty much don’t care what their users think, because nobody ever leaves when stupid shit happens – they just post angry statuses on Facebook.

by pdb on Dec 23, 2009 6:52 AM PST up reply actions

at this point facebook = microsoft

everyone loves to complain about it, while still using it because it’s pretty much the best at what it does for now. in a few years that might change but I don’t see FB going the way of myspace any time soon.

by pdb on Dec 23, 2009 7:49 AM PST up reply actions

Everyone loves to complain about it.

But I’d argue that, like with SOME of the things about Microsoft, it’s completely justifiable. These are poor, poor business decisions that only work because there is no alternative. Every time they do this they increase the chance that they’ll get replaced someday, when they could simply not make stupid business decisions and virtually guarantee they keep that market share.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Dec 23, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not saying the complaints aren't justified

just that FB doesn’t need to care so much because instead of leaving FB people just bitch about it on FB.

by pdb on Dec 23, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, agreed.

But if I can’t make wall posts without it interfering with my privacy (for example), I am not going to make wall posts as often, which means I am not going to get responses as often, which means I’m not going to check that often. And that’s not even me taking a stand – that’s simply the nature of not using the products full capacity. They actually can lose money on some of these decisions, even if people don’t leave, because if you don’t sign on, they don’t get the ad impressions.

Not like they care about me anyway since I have adblock, but still.

So Avatar is simply the most visually stunning thing I have ever seen.

Its the movie equivalent of the mariners trading for Cliff Lee and Milton Bradley.

Its beyond even trying to argue about – Because if someone needs convincing that its worth it – then thats their own problem that they don’t want to see the most enjoyable theater experience ever.

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 23, 2009 8:36 AM PST reply actions

But how is the story?

I like nice visuals, but if the story’s crap it totally distracts from how nice it looks. Exhibit one of that for me: The Matrix. If that were a silent film, it’d be way better than it actually was with the sound on – looked amazing, but the story was…yeccccch. So how’s the story of Avatar?

by pdb on Dec 23, 2009 8:45 AM PST up reply actions

Which is to say, it's not great but it's not Transformers terrible.

Here’s what Roger Ebert said:

I’ve complained that many recent films abandon story telling in their third acts and go for wall-to-wall action. Cameron essentially does that here, but has invested well in establishing his characters so that it matters what they do in battle and how they do it. There are issues at stake greater than simply which side wins.

by BrianL on Dec 23, 2009 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

Better then I was expecting.

Its something that has been told before but its so well executed that it isn’t boring.

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 23, 2009 8:47 AM PST up reply actions

Even if I'm wrong and you hate the story.

I still think you should go see it. But it has good pacing, good acting, I actually liked the script. It doesn’t try to wow you with action (until the end like BrianL comment above)

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 23, 2009 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

This was my problem with the movie

Visually stunning for sure, but the story was really annoying if you’ve seen a lot of movies that are just like it. So even as beautiful as the whole thing was it was difficult to sit through.

by OlSalty on Dec 23, 2009 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

It's interesting that you say it's difficult to sit through but still worth the money

The last movies I heard that about were the LOTR movies, and that’s about 375 tediously-dialogued hours of my life I will never get back.

by pdb on Dec 23, 2009 11:17 AM PST up reply actions

I know a lot of people have mentioned it

but I think it’s pretty comparable with Star Wars: A New Hope. If completely black and white distinctions between good and bad doesn’t bother you too much, you’ll enjoy the movie.

by BrianL on Dec 23, 2009 11:44 AM PST up reply actions

The action is pretty well spaced out

So it should keep you interested. And if it doesn’t bother you that you’re going to know exactly where the story is heading from the start of the movie, you’ll probably enjoy it alot. That was more the reason I had some trouble sitting through it at times, because the dialogue and story is so full of cliches. But the action keeps it from being tedious.

And the 3D is amazing.

by OlSalty on Dec 23, 2009 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

Pretty much exactly what he said.

Cameron did such a good job with the pacing – that it seem to hide the flaws/cliches of the story. (Though I don’t mind these types of stories as much as OlSalty might)

It’s usually the only time we can all get together. So Christmas proper most of my family is in Portland, my sister is in Snoqualmie and I’m drunk at home. When we do all manage to finally have Christmas though, it’s bog standard. Roast beast, tree, gifts, little kids, a nap, a movie.

I like ham when it's piping hot right out of the oven

When it gets all cold and congealy it’s gross. The problem with holiday hams is that there has never been a holiday in my life when ham was served that the ham got sliced, served, and eaten out of the oven. I have been promised that this year that will be the case.

Well that's just sad

George Michael – the Sports Machine guy, not the gay-sex-cruising-pop-star guy, died yesterday. For those of us who grew up in an age when media in general and sports in particular were not a 24/7 firehose of information, and when every game in every sport wasn’t on some channel somewhere, the Sports Machine was awesome – a half-hour show Sunday nights recapping the best of the week in sports, complete with fake “machine” and infused with all the gravitas that sports really doesn’t deserve.

It was an awesome show for its time, and I’m sad that George Michael is gone.
