Ackley and Triunfel on MLB TV right now
AFL baseball action on live TV, some kind of all-star game. Ackley is in Center ad Triunfel is at short. So far Ackley is getting a lot of work in Center and he looks like he's got good range. I'm not sure about his arm, he seems to be short arming the ball a bit.
I'm not sure if this is common knowledge, but I'm jonsing for some Mariners and this is as close as we're going to get for a while.

I couldn't decide whether to make a thread for this or not
Here’s the link. Mike Minor’s getting destroyed so I think we might see Josh fields soon as well as Ackley and Triunfel.
Fuck Anaheim.
Good eye there by Ackley.
Hard to see much from one at bat, but he did seem pretty patient up there.
Haha, we're the lonely baseball nerds here.

It's free.
If your internet and computer are up to snuff, it should work.

MLB.com? Free?
go figure.
ah, I see that I have good audio, and herky video — pretty typical for me.

I wonder if that is puny computer or puny dsl strength...
Do we know the broadcast team? voices sound vaguely familiar.

Daron Sutton, apparently

Even though Fields is showing good heat, I wish he'd mix in something bendy.
Also, he doesn’t seem to have that nice easy fastball, he seems to really be throwing as hard as he can. I wonder if he’s over throwing, or if this is how he always deals.
His fastball really pops. It seems to really jump out of his hand nicely.
by Smegmalicious on Nov 7, 2009 6:00 PM PST up reply actions
I'm pretty convinced he has no idea where it's going.
Though he seems to miss more up/down than in/out.

Is it pronounced Triunfel or Truinfel?
every time I hear it on tv it’s the latter but I always figure the announcers are making what seems to be an easy mistake.
Fuck Anaheim.
It is Tree-un-fel.
They were pronouncing it Troo-en-fel which is wrong.

Triunfel batting stance looks familiar

The screenshot isn’t the best, but his stance instantly reminded me of Alex Rodriguez. In this particular shot he has the bat up a little high, but when he relaxed it looked pretty similar.
He's a lot thicker than I imagined. I saw the homerun, but has he fielded any balls?
How does he move out there?
Haven't seen him enough in the field to really judge
After seeing him at spring training, I can definitely say he’s put on a lot of weight since.
I think Poochie spelled "phat" incorrectly.

very cut, but probably about 6-2, 170
Hey, the announcers are talking about LD%. Yay for baseball getting smarter.

That was pretty cool
but I wish the other guy would stop banging on about ‘things you can’t teach’.
Fuck Anaheim.
Seriously.
“Ackley’s dad didn’t let him pull the ball as a kid. He always went the other way.”
“That’s something you can’t teach.”
“They’re twin brothers, other brother plays in the Cards system, and in high school, on pitched the first end of the double header and the other pitched the second, with the first catching.”
“That’s something you can’t teach.”

It's Tony Clark.
And in case you thought those things I listed were non sequitors, no, he’s that bad.

Him, he knows from siblings.
lest we forget the immortal Husky Greg Clark.

Yeah, that Danks thing was particularly odd
He essentially said ‘You can’t teach a guy to have a sibling in the same organisation’.
Fuck Anaheim.
I think my favorite...
was some Baseball America quote, either from them or from a scout, a few years back when they were talking about some guy’s build and said “he has size you can’t teach”. It made sense, but it was still really funny to me.

Those crack me up, until they don't anymore. That size one sounds familiar.
I’ve heard speed a fair amount of times as well.
Just turned it on.
And I missed Triunfel’s AB? Bah!
You probably missed all of the M's hitters then.
He took a ball, the grounded out.
Looks like we’re waiting on an Aumont appearance for our M’s fix.

Do you think this will become more of a regular thing?
I remember he was struggling to hit for power, what, a season ago.
Triunfel already has the bat speed for solid contact.
The idea was that if he added some power he’d be a hell of a potential star. The stock was there already, he just had to add strength and do it.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Nov 7, 2009 7:03 PM PST up reply actions
Probably.
His age relative to league has always been pretty low. He was eighteen last year, playing in a league that is two above what the best eighteen-year-olds would usually see. Plus, he wasn’t finished growing and whatnot, may not be yet, so him just keeping his head above water was a plus.

He seems to be a big contact guy to me.
Not going to walk much, but not going to strike out much either. If he can get some power behind the contact, he’ll be pretty amazing.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Nov 7, 2009 7:11 PM PST up reply actions
Seems about right.
He’ll swing early and then defend the plate. It might drive people a little crazy because he won’t take too many pitches early on, but I think they could train him to do it.
I’m having a hard time figuring out where to slot him in the system, given that I’m pretty sure he’s a second baseman now and missed all of this past year.

They screwed it up though.
Rickey was not talking about Rickey in the third person.

I thought that was true until you told me otherwise.
Don’t tell the story, tell the legend!
What I saw from Ackley
He ranged over in the first inning and made an easy catch of a well hit fly ball that kept carrying.
On a home run hit to dead center, he had it tracked the whole way. Even though it landed quite a few feet beyond the fence, he knew where it was.
He ran in quickly on a short bloop to center field to prevent runners from moving up. His throw was errant, but backed up well.
He didn’t even offer at pitches that weren’t close to the zone in both at bats. Walked against the righty and against a lefty he had a good approach. He struck out on a nice fastball on the outer half, and he knew it. He flinched, looking offspeed, I’m guessing.
