I think he wants it to be over, as much as believing in the Yankee's line-up (and Pettitte)

hyphen18 About to watch the last game of 09. Starts at 11:57am here in AUS.Ok lets get this over with so we can get on with 2010. M’s = playoffs!

Yeah

I think so, too. Just seeing some recent tweets, he is obviously not happy about the Yanks winning, but looking forward to 2010…can’t say I blame him, I was in the same spot…

Worse than a homerun!
You would think that a lead off walk would lead to more big innings than a lead off home run. Not true. A lead off home run, this year, has lead to more multi-run innings than lead off walks. It’s against conventional thinking."

Observations from a New York Bar, pt. II

1. I meet a friend of my friend, who sits in the booth with us drinking a Bud Light. To my right is Eric, the Phillies fan, Ken, the NL fan, on the other side, and me. “Are you another Phillies fan?” she groans. I shake my head. “Whatever, you’re going to high five me when this is through.” She has a NY emblazoned on her chest. She tells us how when she was living in Boston she would go out in her Yankees gear and have people tell her that she should die. Matsui comes to bat and the broadcaster mentions that he is a triple away from the cycle, that no one has ever hit for the cycle in a World Series game. “What’s a cycle?” she asks us.

2. There was a fellow two booths over. I’m sure you’ve seen him before. He has a backwards had and has a voice so hoarse from screaming that you wonder how he interacts with normal people. If someone transcribes his speech, one must consult style guides to see how many exclamation points would be appropriate. Archetypal post frat boy. He starts inventing chants that don’t catch on. He regards Girardi with such fascination, such longing, that you have no doubt that if the man were to break out of the tv at that moment and step in to the bar he would probably be first in line to suck his dick (“no homo”). Outside, when the night is accomplished for most in the bar, he sees me and the guys, escaping the din, and I’m sucking down a cigarette. He emerges from the bar and asks me if I can spare one. I decline, saying it was my last one, and he hits up someone else. “I still have one left.” “Yeah, I know.”

3. Outside a riot brews two streets over at the Lion’s Head (where I saw an effigy of the Phanatic, upside-down and in a noose last week), where the locals from the block, thugs all who act as that strange reminder that Morningside is Harlem, despite its attempts to rebrand itself. They are good people, but I can see why we chose the college bar instead. A throng rushes into the streets, and you realize that “standing room only” would have even been exaggerated. The corner is filled with perhaps a hundred people. New York New York begins to play and toilet paper rolls go streaming through the sky. My night is over. I have resigned myself to the failed venture, the hope that I would somehow escape my New York tenure without seeing this madness, this madness that only seems to grow uglier in an environment where entitlement makes victory a matter of course. I head west, and prepare for a long and exhausting Thursday.

Same.

She was talking about the situation in Boston with such pride. “Whatever happens, I’m going to support my team,” she said. Turned out you could take that a bit too literally, as baseball itself doesn’t seem to be her forte.

Ken had to explain the cycle to her. I refused to lift my head from the table.
