I think it was asking too much to expect Zobrist to win it.
They’re finally getting over wins for pitchers. Let’s not get frustrated over progress!
Fans are typically idiots.

Zobrist did not deserve to win it.
Don’t forget that WAR doesn’t include defense for catchers. It can be safely assumed due to everything we know about Mauer that he was probably a better than 4 run defender at catcher, and that was all he would need to have been to beat Zobrist’s 8.6 WAR. Mauer deserved to win MVP. The shame is that Zobrist didn’t get second, not that he was shafted from first.
...and now I'm here
But even if you take them at face value, Mauer still needs to get credit for catcher defense somehow, and thus still deserved MVP.
I’m inclined to believe Zobrist’s UZR numbers because I want a guy named Zobrist to be awesome. Zobrist is the last name I wish I had.
...and now I'm here
I think it's a safe bet that he's not a +30 run second basemen AND a +30 outfielder
Because that’s insane.
I don't even think it's worth regressing a sample that small

Well, you have to do something
At least just use the fans scouting report.

Michael Cuddyer received an 8th and 10th place vote
Despite being less valuable than Jose Lopez (2.6 WAR to 2.0 WAR)
Ben Zobrist (he of the major league leading WAR) did not get higher than a 6th place vote. Jason Bay got a 3rd and a 4th. Guesses as to what would happen if they swapped teams?
Well, considering Zobrist was worth a full 2 WAR more than 2008 AL MVP Pedroia...votes would be quite different.
Someone thought Jason Bay was the 3rd most valuable player in the AL. Nice.
