My name is Chintan Desai and I am a member of the Lookout Landing community and UC Davis student doing a paper on a community that I am apart of. I have decided to choose the Lookout Landing community. In order to do so, I have to collect some census data on the demographics of the community that I have chosen so that I can accurately paint a picture of the community as a whole. Now obviously there is the problem with the anonymity of the Internet, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out by listing as much as you want of the following things: There is no pressure to fill out all of this, but obviously the more I have the more useful it would be.

Now, obviously asking for people's race/ethnicity may be controversial, but again note that this is simply for a research paper on community. None of this information will be used for anything other than the paper. I will also gladly share the paper with you once it is complete.

Some people are born with biological characteristics of both sexes. The wikipedia page on intersexuality quotes a couple estimates on the percentage of live births with some ambiguity at 1% and 1.7%, so it’s not terribly uncommon.

I’d be interested to see if we’ve essentially gotten our core group by this point in LL. Put another way: in 5 years, will the site’s average age be ~30, or will it still be ~25?
There will be a steady stream of new LL members (possibly even accelerated, if the Mariners keep winning and SBN becomes more widely distributed)
I think the site’s average age, in general, matches the style and content that the authors put out. If, God forbid, the authors grow up some in the future, you might see an older demographic LL community emerge.
Either that or if we all the regulars get old at the same rate as Jeff

If you’re still around, gathering all this tasty data, has the site’s demographic profile shifted at all since last you did the survey?
The core users have aged a bit, but we seem to have added quite a few high school or below-age-20 users recently.

Yes, I've considered this more than I should for this being someone else's problem
But how does that get corrected to give the most representative view of the community? Each data point weighted by number of posts would seemingly be the simplest method, but I’m not sure posts:membership in the community is a perfect relationship.
I lurked without registering for almost a year before posting.
I felt like a member of the community.

People who never post anything probably shouldn’t be included as part of the “community”, not that there’s anything wrong with that or that he has any other choice really considering the sources of data he has at his disposal.
Well, I know this probably isn't scientific anyway, so the whole issue is moot.
But if it were somehow going to have some real analysis, there could be considerable difference between those that comment with some regularity and those that don’t comment at all, and I do think that would make a big difference in how you described a “community.” If all lurkers were, by in large, older people of some ethnic descent and less college experience, as an example, that would be interesting. If these lurkers then posted as though they were part of the community, even though they had never commented before, and that was blurred into the data, then the interesting fact would be lost.

I'm not sure where you're going here, and I can't speak for anyone else.
I was drawn to this site by the writing of the posters. I’m very dismayed by the lack of diversity in the census so far although I’m not at all shocked. Anyone, can feel a part of a community even if they never comment. I would think that there are many people who have not registered/commented who read this blog regularly but still feel part of this community. I’m guessing that most of them are not 18-22 year-old males.

I think the best conclusion he can draw here is that that people who do post here are mostly in their mid-20’s, white, with some college education. That doesn’t mean that’s the majority of the reading audience, just that it’s the majority of the people who post here.

That is exactly my point.
If the lurkers are not 18-22 year old males, but the commeters are, that is interesting. If this was a real study. I would want to know that, because that’s would be an interesting data point. However, if we treated lurkers and non-lurkers equally, then we wouldn’t get to see that interesting data.
Consider a real scientific study – Say, you wanted to know how successful a certain teacher was at getting his students through college. Now, say that those that attended his class only one time and dropped out didn’t finish college, and all of those that went to all of his classes all finished college. If the parameters were “Those that attended his class” – as in, anyone over 0, then you would include all of the people that only attended his class once as though they were equal, and the data would be blurred together.
This is kind of an extreme example, but if all lurkers were, say, 50 year old Hispanic females, and all regulars were 18 year old white males – even though the lurkers may consider themselves a part of the community and even BE a part of the community – the fact that there is an interesting distinction between lurkers and non lurkers makes combining the data as though they were equal a shame, because you would lose that interesting bit of information.
