Rosenthal reports M's have talked to Jays about Lyle Overbay
Overbay is both not very good and due $7m in 2010, so, with our salary situation, I wouldn't expect this to get much farther.

WHY
Would much rather have Branyan. Much, much rather.

I imagine the thought would be Overbay starting at 1B, Branyan at DH
and then Griff slides into DH when one of the two is injured.

If so couldn't we expect average production at 1B from Carp?
That’s about the best case scenario for Overbay
by OlSalty on Nov 11, 2009 12:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Average is probably a stretch.
But, yeah, Overbay’s cost isn’t worth the improvement over Carp.
To borrow from Jeff, my assumption is that it went like this
Zduriencik: So, Overbay…
Torouopulosuoulsous: Yeah!
Z: I hear you might be willing to move him.
T: Yeah!
Z: We might be interested…
T: Yeah!
Z: If you pick up some of his salary.
T: Ye—oh, no.
Z: Okay. click
T: I gotta leak this to people think Overbay is worth trading for!

Right I get that Jack is probably just covering his bases
But I just don’t get why we would even be remotely interested in him. There have got to be guys out there who can match Overbay’s production who can be had for less, if those people aren’t in the organization already.

Yeah, there's no way Z wants him unless they pay some of that salary.

I know. It was meant tongue-in-cheek.
Although, these are the people who gave Wells his contract, so maybe it’s not as absurd as it sounds.

This sort of rumor used to make me very nervous
these days I can pretty much ignore them and rest easy

flip?
I actually see a lot of interest in Overbay out there… so I would actually trust Zduriencik to take advantage of the Blue Jays in this deal and then maybe take advantage of another team in an Overbay deal… much like he did with getting Heilman from the Mets… wow, come to think about it. He might have stuck it to three teams on that deal. I’m so jealous.

But local native!
Wait, we’re not doing that anymore?

I just like this note at the bottom.
One agent who spoke with Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik this week came away convinced that Seattle will try to add veteran talent this winter — rather than move star pitcher Felix Hernandez.
In fact, a starting pitcher is on the Mariners’ wish list.
“Jack wants to win,” the agent said.

He added Griffey!
So now we have the veteran part taken care of. So clearly it’s time to add talent.

I must have been misreading FanGraphs
Either that, or my ability to properly compare is way, way off. Poop.

Huh.
Bill James projections for 2010:
Mike Carp: .746 OPS, .331 wOBA
Lyle Overbay: .802 OPS, .354 wOBA
Somehow, almost 7 million for 20-ish points of wOBA from a 1B (and probably ~1 WAR) doesn’t strike me as worth it. Pass.

Yeah thats like paying 7 million for a win. Thats overpaying.
Lyle Overpay. :)

Bill James projections are not very good.
They’re almost always very optimistic.

When I initially read this though
I was actually comparing Overbay and Branyan. Overbay’s basic number projections look slightly better….unless I’m wrong, like I said…I hadn’t taken money into account, but the original rumor referred to Overbay as “affordable”, which made me wonder how much they offered Branyan. Not that the rumor mill would know anything about what we might consider ‘affordable’, but…yeah…
Also, Overbay = hometown hero! teehee! /sarcasm

This is where I went, outside the local guy thing.
Throw in some GMZ trade voodoo and bingo, guy could be a bargain. What do I know. GMZ appears to be a natural horse trader, and that’s something you can’t teach.

Overbay is like 2 WAR
And he is 32, so decline is expected.
Branyan was almost 3 WAR last year with some missed time. And will probably be cheaper to sign than Overbay.
Get Branyan.

I would think maybe a Overbay/ Carp l/r platoon
based on Overbay’s splits, but when you keep a backup DH, you probably need an everyday first baseman. Then again, Overbay won’t happen so…

Please disregard
I am an idiot, and apparently have never seen carp swing a bat

Although nothing has gone wrong yet
I hope that Zduriencik is aware that the 2004 Brewers were not a successful team and while assembling them as the 2010 Mariners would be a neat trick, it would not be conducive to winning baseball

They could also be leaking this to give themselves some extra leverage in the Branyan negotiations.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
