Zduriencik On Griffey Coming Back
Via Yahoo!:
"We believe that Ken’s presence with the Seattle Mariners organization was such a positive asset last season with his leadership on and off the field," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "His passion for baseball, life and the Seattle Mariners goes unsaid. We are happy to have Ken back for the 2010 season."
When Z traded for Jack Wilson and Ian Snell, he talked about their skills.
When Z traded for Franklin Gutierrez and the rest of them, he talked about their skills.
When Z signed Russell Branyan, he talked about his skills.
When Z traded for David Aardsma, he talked about his skills.
When Z re-signed Griffey for 2010, he talked about his leadership and passion.
Let there be no doubt that this is all about the clubhouse.

Wouldn't it have been easier to buy a new big screen?
Or a vibrating chair? Maybe repaint? Pet monkey? Circus clown?
All of the above, even. Surely there are cheaper ways to keep the clubhouse happy.

There will be no monkeys.
That’s so 2002

Mojo the helper Monkey is really the perfect Yuni comparison
Both started looking like a solution to all of our problems, both were incredibly useful for a while, both got teamed up with an incompetent partner, both are related to each other, both got fat and both were left on the door step of an unsuspecting person.

I'm OK with it
as long as “leadership” as a basis for roster choices only extends to this decision. And we have no reason to think Z would extend it further.

This is like complaining that Sweeney was picked over Shelton last year
by Graham on Nov 11, 2009 1:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I would never complain about such a thing.
I just don’t want the designated tickler to take away from a legitimate DH. The M’s have limited areas to make offensive improvements.

It's unlikely that Griffey sees significant playtime, though
I would be really surprised if he saw anything close to what he was given last year.

I'd be surprised and appalled

He's not going to and everything said about this has made it clear
You’re getting worked up over nothing.

I would say more disappointed than worked up.
After reading all the other Griffy posts I am starting to feel a little less disappointed.

Did anyone see the ESPN.com headline?
“M’s tickled pink over Griffey extension” or something similar.

Its was pretty clear from Zduriencik's comments that Griffey was brought back to be the Designated Tickler

Yep.
And obviously we’re still in the market for a real DH.

Cool.
I wonder if this makes us more likely to sign Nick Johnson.

Weren't you people ever young?
If this signing made any appreciable difference keeping the Mariners from being a playoff team next season, then yeah, rag on it till you’re blue in the face. But unless the team somehow magically improves by 24 wins AGAIN, 2010 was never going to be a playoff year. A signing to make happy the clubhouse and fans who have actual emotions and not just dogmatic obsessions to unpronounceable stats can only be a good thing. Frankly, for all the talk about how the team needs to improve its offense, would that really start with not re-signing the team’s third most prolific home run hitter from the previous year? It’s not like the team was realistically going to get multiple feared power hitters this offseason.
If he’s hitting .120 with two RBI on May 15, may he have the grace to step aside, but I doubt that will happen. I’m happy he’s ending his career as a Mariner.

Well hey thanks for stopping by
I think you could’ve done without the “dogmatic obsessions to unpronouncable stats” snipe, because that just makes you look stupid. Do you judge the value of all things based on your ability to pronounce them?

I'm one of the only people here that's happy he's back.
But it’s a tremendously bad baseball move and there’s no justification for wanting him back at all other than it makes me feel gooey, which is not a good reason to sign anyone. I’m happy he’s back for illogical reasons. I’m unhappy that the GM made a decision based on my illogical reasons.
...and now I'm here
