Our Defense (Was) A Good Defense
The voting results for the 2009 Fielding Bible Awards have been released, and Jack Wilson, Ichiro, and Franklin Gutierrez claimed 33% of the electronic hardware, with both Adrian Beltre and Jack Hannahan finishing as runners-up at third base. This is about as significant as the Kids Choice Awards, with the only real difference being that most of the Mariners have probably heard of the Kids Choice Awards.
It is interesting that, of the eight non-pitcher defensive positions, you could make the argument that the Mariners wound up with the best glove at four of them. It's absurd how good this defense was all season. It's also absurd how few people realize the difference that made. Can a brother get a big bat over here?!

Positive UZR in LF in 2009!
He dragged good routes, despite below-average speed.
Solely with the M's, just in LF, Hall was +1.5 in range runs
and was +0.6 in range runs for his time in RF.
It nets to near zero, thanks to some poor arm scores in his LF time. But… hahahahaha!
(Bill Hall only played one inning in LF with the Brewers)
Ramirez 3:14

Not to mention...
The Chavez-Saunders-Langerhans-Hall revolving door was no slouch in left.
Chavez could have given Crawford a run for his money in left. Yuni’s so bad, he can downgrade 2 defensive positions.
Our defense was a blast to watch this year and they deserve the recognition.
I second the call for a big bat.
I hear Babe Ruth swung some pretty big bats.
Is 54 oz. big enough for you?
I will smash your face into a jelly.

The Mariners
had 16.4 WAR as a team according to www.fangraphs.com
Over half of our teams value above replacement was defense?
You're probably just looking at position players.
In which case, it makes perfect sense that half of our position players’ value this year came from defense.

I've generally seen a 50/33.3/16.6 split
Between WAR from Offense/Pitching/Defense.
So on a team with average hitting and defense, you’ll see a 3:1 Offensive:Defensive WAR ratio. It tells you both how bad the M’s offense was and how good their defense was that the ratio was 1:1 this year.
Yeah, this year's M's
had to have been one of the most statistically skewed teams in modern memory.
