Today's Fun Fact
Hat tip to Matthew, who brought Adam Dunn's 2009 UZR to my attention...
Update: and look how this post is slightly different from his!
Since 2006, Adam Dunn has been worth 115.3 runs above average at the plate. Over that span, he's posted a raw wOBA of .385.
Since 2006, Pedro Feliz has been worth 58.2 runs below average at the plate. Over that span, he's posted a raw wOBA of .302.
Since 2006, Adam Dunn has been worth 7.1 WAR.
Since 2006, Pedro Feliz has been worth 7.4 WAR.
Adam Dunn is not this bad of a player. Adam Dunn is not a bad player at all. But somebody, please, for the love of all that is holy, get him the hell out of the National League.

The difference between Adam Dunn's and Franklin Gutierrez's UZR
is the close to the same difference as between Albert Pujols and Franklin Gutierrez at the plate.

Obviously it's important not to focus just on Dunn's 2009 UZR
Crazier than his single season number, I think, is that track record.

Is it?
Obviously the track record is laughable. But, I vote for the single season number being crazier. It was the worst UZR in the majors by 15 runs. It’s 5.5 standard deviations away from the mean!

Crazier than -36 in one season is -64 in two!

64! Dunn took a bad number and squared it!

A number very slightly below average and multiplied it by 64!

A number 64 runs above average and subtracted 128!
