This one was so good it made Rany Jazayerli take a break from his break from the Royals to sign up to SBN and say "well done." Also worth reading: Rany's final post of 2009.

I don't agree.

We may have had better talent than they do, but the front office was the same, if not worse.

...and now I'm here

At least Bill Bavasi wasn't a jerk about it.

Hard work never killed nobody, but I won't take my chances.

You obviously weren't a Mariners fan in the 1980's

it was every inch this bad.

I think there are big differences, though.

1) Free agency was different in the 80’s.
2) Divisions were larger and there was no wild card, which reduced the odds of having success.
3) The Mariners were a young franchise.
4) The Royals were once a proud and successful franchise.
5) Player evaluation is (should be) better today.

I was too young to know what it was like to be a Mariners fan in the 80’s and how the FO operated, but the Royals are in a situation that could have been avoided. The Mariners took 15 years to have a season above .500; The Royals have had one above .500 season in 16 years. The Mariners in the 80’s may have had it this bad, but the Royals are quickly going to new depths with Dayton Moore at the helm.

After having gone through the Bavasi era, I think we can all sympathize how Royals fans feel about Dayton Moore.

The 80's Mariners were like the pre-Friedman Tampa teams.

Horrible teams, veterans that were signed as their careers were ending, good but not great homegrown players who were traded off right as they were hitting their peak, an ugly stadium with mediocre crowds, their sister expansion team had success, dysfunctional and incompetent front offices and owners, and ugly uniforms.

Yes.

They were like the Tampa teams if you add in constant threats to move…

to Tampa.

And a Marlins-esque owner who would sell off good players just to keep salary low.

If I rec this comment it goes green.

I have that kind of power in this industry.
