Essbowl I scoop
Alright. We have a couple of takers. Others undecided. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the game starts a little after 3PM. I'll double check that.
I'll have some munchies here, but potluck items would be appreciated. BYOB. Housebroken children are welcome (so Robert, get out of work).
Email me for my number and directions.
Our meager home can fit a few more, so if you're interested, let me know.

If you want, you can just reuse the diary from before.
If you Edit it, you can put an update up on top, and tell it to republish with the date and time check box at the bottom checked, effectively bumping it.
As a good side effect, all the comments come with it, so people can see the discussion already taken place, and know who else is coming/not and why.
Just a tip, because it’s easy to miss when you’re posting.

I must warn those attending,
I don’t have a huge TV or anything. I might be picking up a 19 or 22" LCD HDTV tomorrow, but I still won’t have HD because I don’t have the Comcast digital box. Our cable IS digital, but I lack the box. Anyway, it won’t be necessarily as pretty as it could be, but it’ll be fun.

If you have an HD-capable TV and basic cable,
you have that game in HD. It’ll be on FOX, which you should be able to pick up in HD in the digital range of your TV.
Call up Comcast and ask what the HD channel for Fox is with no box, and point your TV there. It’ll most likely be a decimal channel.

Though the picture quality will be much much much better through the box
but it’d only really be noticeable on a bigger tv
by JI on Jan 30, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Umm, huh?
If he gets a 22" TV w/ 720p and ATSC/QAM tuner, Fox’s HD digital feed will look exactly the same as that signal running through an HD box that pumps out 720p. He just won’t get more than the very basic channels in HD, i.e. FOX/NBC/CBS/ABC/etc.

No, considering I have access to both this size of a tv
and a 40" 1080p tv I know the difference.
The quality of picture on the box with an HDMI connection is light years ahead of that of a standard cable connection. At 19-22" inches it would be pointless, but on a living room size set (~37" or more) it’s night and day.
by JI on Jan 30, 2009 9:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's got to be due to upconverting on the box.
Because both the onTV tuner and the box use the same data for the basic channels, unless Comcast Seattle is drastically different from the rest of the Comcast universe, as well as every other provider.
Are you getting 720p/1080i for both, or is it defaulting to the base 480i channel when you go through the onTV tuner?

by Faux on Jan 30, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm guessing It's because the HDMI is a far superior connection to a standard cable.
by JI on Jan 30, 2009 9:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
But the cable doesn't matter to the compressed stream that comes in.
That same stream (81.1 in your area, according to a few sites I’ve seen) is used for all of the TV that you may have in the bedroom, the line going to your EyeTV, and the one going into the cable box. The cable box decompresses it just like the QAM tuner in your bedroom TV and the EyeTV.
The compressed MPG stream is the same data at all those points. It’s all going to be 720p/1080i coming into the box/tuner. It doesn’t matter if you hook a garden hose or fire hose to the faucet in your yard, it’ll only pump as much as the spigot will allow.
So it has to be some sort of signal processing on your dig box, or you aren’t getting the 720 feed into your TV’s tuner. Otherwise there can’t be a difference.

To clarify,
The digital cable box will take that 81.1 data, and give it a more friendly number like 504 or something, to match their channel numbering scheme. But the actual data is the same as the 81.1 channel you can go to directly from the other tuners.

No crap
Dude, I’m not blind I’ve played with it, it’s a 1000 times better through the box. The box is using a superior method of delivering the signal to the tv, therefore the picture is better.
It doesn’t matter what channel. All the HD channels are much clearer and vibrant through the box then they are without
by JI on Jan 30, 2009 10:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you assume I'm arguing with you when I'm actually trying to figure out stuff and clear up some misconceptions.
I didn’t say that the box wasn’t making it better, or that you were wrong that it looked better. I was just trying to narrow down why, more for my curiosity than anything else, and sharing some things I found interesting (see below).
But to quibble a minor point from up above, the wires you use don’t matter until a point high above Cable’s current limitations. The best 720p signal (right now the highest BW cable offers) only runs about 1.4Gbps. In comparison, 1080p 120Hz uncompressed will run about 14.4Gbps.
Any HDMI 1.2 rated wire will run about 3.5Gbps. Hell, good quality component video will do the equivalent of about 1.8 – 2.2 Gbps, making HDMI almost unnecessary for cable hookups that don’t have 1080p upconverting receivers.

Anyone remember the LL Opening Day party a year or two back at Chez Matthew?
That TV wasn’t too big either IIRC and there were several of us… we were okay. I don’t think the TV’s size will be too big a deal.

speaking of Comcast & digital boxes ....
we all know that they are planning to switch ch. 30-99 from analog to digital around the same time as the Federal Digital switch, right? so if you don’t have a digital box (ie your cable goes directly into the tv) you’re likely to lose half your channels— they say they will give the needed converter boxes to customers for free….

Also, if people have easily portable chairs, that might be good… We have a few.

The reason why they are doing that is because you can currently get FSN and ESPN on the 12 dollar a month package

I would imagine it's because they now get to control how many TVs are in a household.
Where before cable would have been for anyone that could plug into it, not you need the box.
Or else they could have just put all the digital channels on QAM, had the same exact service on digital tuner tvs, and boxes for analog only.

Ohhhhh
Nevermind that. I didn’t realize that Comcast still had 2 separate tiers for non-box cable. It makes sense now. The boxes are to keep people from going above their service levels. The control factor is just an added bonus.

by msb on Jan 30, 2009 9:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I get the reasoning behind dropping analog.
And it is exactly for the reasons they state.
What I’m saying is that if everyone had the same non-box service (there wasn’t a basic and expanded), there would be limited need for the box. They would only need to give them to people without digital tuners, because they wouldn’t need to encrypt channels. But instead they have to give out decryption boxes to people because they don’t want to combine the two basic levels.

See, I'm in a unique situation.
I live in the downstairs mother-in-law unit of my former boss’s house. She’s got the house wired to Comcast digital cable, so even without the box I get basic. If I had the box, I’d be set. Some guy in Kent was trying to sell one for $75 on Craigslist, but I’m not driving that far and spending that much.

That and it probably won't work unless it's hacked.
The full digital boxes usually come with service cards that are traceable and blockable.
She might be able to get you one of the expanded basic converter boxes that are discussed above, if she’s not using both of the free ones it looks like she gets with her service.

RECAP:
It’s new to me, but apparently HD comes with it’s limitations. Looking at the pock-marked faces of some of the players and analysts is akin to looking into satan’s bunghole (sorry, AC – not a poop joke).
Fun times. Silas and Toots Jr hit it off like gangbusters, and by quarter two they had already constructed a pipe bomb out of dirty tube socks, an alarm clock, and some Gomez-chewed Wrigley gum.
So yeah, Toots was here – awesome friend.
Gomez kept us all in stitches.
MSB was a fantabulous guest, and we love her. She also brought a stellar dish that I’m sure was spiked, as I suddenly found myself attractive in the bathroom mirror. That feeling has since subsided into shame and remorse.
Great time! Small group, and EssBowl II has bigger expectations, so AC, RC, Robert, Graham, NOLA, Matthew, Marc and others – clear your schedules. I’ll see you next year when Michael Vick takes us to the Super Bowl and PETA eats each other in dispute.*
*Fuck Michael Vick – that’s a Mora joke.
