Mariners & Cubs Discuss Heilman Trade

Cubs close to Heilman trade

According to ESPN Radio's Bruce Levine, the Cubs are close to acquiring pitcher Aaron Heilman from the Mariners.  The Ms want shortstop Ronny Cedeno and pitching in return.  Heilman was dealt to Seattle in the J.J. Putz trade earlier this winter.  Earlier this month, Ken Rosenthal mentioned that the Mariners were likely willing to trade Heilman, "who they did not consider a key component of the Putz trade."

Heilman, 30, is set to earn $1.625MM in '09.  He'll be eligible for free agency after the 2010 season.

MLBTraderumors.com is, shall we say, not the most reliable of sources and doesn’t warrant a whole lot of serious consideration.

The original note is:

“The Cubs also continue to pursue Seattle pitcher Aaron Heilman. The Mariners are looking for middle infield help, possibly switching one of their current guys to first base next year. They are known to have interest in Ronny Cedeno, who is out of options. Heilman, a former Met, would be exactly the swingman that Piniella could use as a fifth starter or a sixth and seventh inning middle reliever.”

Quick run to Fangraphs shows UZR's at SS for the last 3 years as -3.6,1.3, and -1.0

However, playing 2B for the same time period shows 3.7,1.2, and 1.1.

I did the same thing, but the sample size is really small.

I don’t know if there are any good Cubs blogs out there that would have a little bit of a scouting report. I’ll bet if the trade does go through we’ll have the privledge of reading a good report out the LL/USSM world.

Not everyone kicks ass their first full year in the majors.

Olson has been a highly regarded prospect for the last few years. On a rebuilding team, we can wait for him to bloom.

I'm saying he wasn't as awful as his traditional stats indicate

He's quick though, like a cat ain't he?

Big new though. Watch a lineup of meh bats and plus side/average gloves blow up expectations next year. Then we get to listen to a bunch of talk of overplaying their abilities.

What happened to Rich Hill to send him back to high A ball last year? Google reveals claims of command issues, one comment that he laughed at Sweet Lou who immediately had him shipped out, and a statement by hill claiming he found a flaw in his mechanics. Then he went out and got shelled. Injury? Case of misplaced confidence?

by Kermit. on Jan 28, 2009 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

Hill lost his command,

had some flaw that was tipping his gigantic slow looping curve, and Sweet Lou wasn’t a fan. He hit the Trifecta. Assuming he could fix his mechanics, he WAS a pretty solid starter in 2007 so a repeat performance would be valuable.

but I’d really love to get Harang out of that hell hole.

by marc w on Jan 28, 2009 10:30 AM PST up reply actions

Yessir

Obviously I’d trade Yuni for Votto, but it seems like a poor course of action to give up top prospects for a ~league average 1B even if he is cheap.

by JI on Jan 28, 2009 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

Yes, because I think you can get the same bat fairly cheaply on a one year deal most years.

There are actually reasonably good 1B prospects in the organization now, and while I’m all for stockpiling talent I’d rather stockpile it other places.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 28, 2009 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

We have a surplus of B prospects in the low minors

why not deal a few of them for someone who is ~league average and cheap for the next few years to help the big league club? You’re also getting rid of Yuni, and that has to be a plus (except for for Fogel)

by seattlebruin on Jan 28, 2009 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

I certainly would like to keep prospects too, but I would see something like this as trading from strength

(a whole bunch of B/B+ prospects who are still a ways away) to help the big league team now, and not have to pay out the butt for the player we’re getting.

by seattlebruin on Jan 28, 2009 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

I still don't think money is an object

if it means the difference between contending and not contending.

by JI on Jan 28, 2009 10:42 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with this

but even with this type of deal, we’re still really looking to compete in 2010/2011, when he’ll still be reasonably cheap.

The money isn’t an utter deal-breaker, but it makes enough of a difference that I’d be much more inclined to do something like this

by seattlebruin on Jan 28, 2009 10:44 AM PST up reply actions

zduriencik traded J.J. Putz, Sean Green, Jeremy Reed, and Luis Valbuena for Franklin Gutierrez, Ronny Cedeno, Garrett Olson, Jason Vargas, Endy Chavez, Mickael Cleto, Ezequiel Carrera, and Mike Carp.

But I don’t think we want to see Lopez at first. It’s almost like moving Clement to first.

But Olson looks like a better bet to stick in the rotation to me. I’m still not sold on RRS as a starter.

by davidcameron on Jan 28, 2009 10:19 AM PST reply actions

Where do you see him eventually then?

I’d assume he has too much value to waste as a middle relief/spot start guy. Maybe a LH setup guy who can get both RH and LH batters type-deal?

by seattlebruin on Jan 28, 2009 10:22 AM PST up reply actions

I think the different pitch mix is important as well

RRS uses a curve ball fairly frequently, and is thus much less reliant on the FB.

Olson just needs to figure out what was wrong with his slider – he went from death on a stick to lefties to Sean Green throwing underhanded to lefties last year. Not sure why.
