Seattle Mariners Group Leader Party (with management audio)
I attended the Group Leader party last Friday night at Safeco Field. This is a Party put on by the Mariners that is a little thank you to the people that organized group party events at Safeco Field last year. For instance, my firm hosts a BBQ in the center field patio every year. So, this year I got to go as the representative of my firm.
Rick Rizzs was the MC and he did a great job, he is pretty funny and a real nice gentleman. I talked with him afterwards and all the stories I've heard about his down-to-earth approachable personality is true. Jack Zduriencik (GM) and Don Wakamatsu (Manager) were there also to answer questions from the audience and for the most part, good questions were asked. There were two questions about bringing Ken Griffey Jr. back and why they didn't resign Raul Ibanez that were expected, yet still annoying. If you are a serious fan, and you know anything about the Mariners current situation and what kind of value Griffey and Ibanez have versus how much they are asking for in salary, you wouldn't really need to ask those questions.
Anywho, I am very impressed with the Mariners new GM and Manager. They weren't afraid to tell it like it is and I believe they understand, unlike many teams, the value of defense Yeah Defense! They also understand the idea of a replacement level player, what that means and how to apply that knowledge and build a competitive roster.
I've posted some videos on youtube that I took while at the event of Jack and Don answering some of the better questions asked. The video is pretty poor but my main objective was audio so bear with me on the videos.
Spring can't come soon enough.

Why can't all new users FanPosts be like this one?
Just a word of advice – the little chain-link looking button when you make your FanPost automatically inputs the HTML to hotlink links.
Good post, thanks for the info!
yeah, links
I figured the link thing out and republished. I got a little copy and paste happy and got sloppy. Thanks!
I know I’ve lost it, let me know if you come across it

Same here, thank you very much!
For taking the time to post the segments, share his Q & A. I’m so very excited after hearing the man speak, I feel like we’re incorporating everything good from every team I respect, with a plus bank roll. Wow, I just need to sit down and process that.
Wow.
“We’ll have a healthy Beltre back . . . Russell Branyan will be a reasonably good first baseman . . . We need to get Betancourt to play better at shortstop.”
He might not end up being the clubhouse’s best friend, but Jesus I love this man.
Remember when we were disappointed he was hired over LaCava and Ng?

I choose not to remember that, for I am ashamed.
And then Z’s frank explanation about why team-controlled players are so important: telling the fans that having Braun, Fielder, Hardy and Hart for so cheap was how they were able to go out and give Mike Cameron $10 million. I know it seems so obvious to us, but to have a guy willing to state that to the fans is so refreshing. It sounds a bit cheap (and perhaps cold) to the common fan who doesn’t understand the economics of building a roster, so it’s pretty daring to just go out and say: “Paying a player dirt for a ton of production is awesome.”
It feels kind of dirty to have them go out and say that
but then you think about it and realize that the Major League minimum is $400k/year. I’d be thrilled if someday I made that per two years…

Yeah, but we don't work in an industry where you're forced to retire at 30-35.
That’s a whole other discussion, though.
I think I'd be quite satisfied with my life if I got paid $400k a year from now until I was 35
then retired and could work another, regular job if I did a terrible enough job of managing my money

A very fair point.
But most baseball players didn’t go to college, so their career options are kinda limited post-baseball.
I don’t know, I’m not saying I wouldn’t trade my life for that of a baseball player — I just like to provide the counterargument that not all baseball players are set for life.
Here's something very tangentially related
In Major League Soccer the veterans minimum is 33k. 33,000. These dudes have to work jobs in the off-season just to get by each year, in addition to keeping fit and all. In addition to retiring at age 35, these guys are most def not set for life. The MLB minimum is 400k, but the MLS maximum is 400k.
I don’t feel bad about paying, say RRS, the league minimum to be awesome. When I consider the starters on MLS teams who make 33k a year, it’s a whole different story.
Every MLS team has one exempt salary slot
which they can use to pay over the max. Seattle used theirs on Ljungberg.

I love the posters taunting London about getting Freddie.

I see them on Westlake.
They have a picture of Freddie and they say how we love his Arsenal experience and his cute bald head, and how London can keep its bangers and mash because we have him.

the bangers and mash probably run faster than Freddie at this point.

"I talked with him afterwards and all the stories I've heard about his down-to-earth approachable personality is true. "
which is why I think his ideal job would be Official Mariners Glad-Hander.
"Rick Rizzs...is pretty funny and a real nice gentleman"
He also has a hell of a singing voice, and I’m not being sarcastic, he really does.
