Haven't had a lot of these, but I do like the Stone Imperial Russian

The Stone brewery down in Escondido CA (or somewhere right near there) is a great place to have an awesome brew with an awesome meal if you’re ever down near SD.

I’ll have to take this list to the beer store with me and try a few.

by JonBBT on Jan 24, 2009 2:59 AM PST reply actions

The IPA is the one Stone beer that does nothing for me.

Maybe it’s because the Ruination is superior and I see no reason for it.

by Teej on Jan 24, 2009 3:04 PM PST up reply actions

The Stone IPA is fine but it's definitely their least exciting beer.

It tastes exactly like a watered down Ruination. Other brewers that have multiple IPAs (like Dogfish Head and Great Divide for example) do a good job of producing two beers with differences aside from alcohol content and the quantity of hops.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 24, 2009 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed with both of you

the Stone IPA doesn’t separate itself from the pack the way their other beers tend to do.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 24, 2009 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

It is indeed in Escondido.

And the food is outstanding. An awesome place to go for lunch or dinner. The menu tells you pretty much exactly where their ingredients come from, and most of it is local. I’d eat there once a week if it weren’t a 40-minute drive away.

by Teej on Jan 24, 2009 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

Beautiful place, too

I visited some relatives down there a while back and they were right around the corner from it. Mmhmm..

They’ve since moved (*sniffle)

by JonBBT on Jan 24, 2009 12:37 PM PST up reply actions

Escondido blows donkey balls

Stone is the only redeeming part of that city

by seattlebruin on Jan 24, 2009 12:44 PM PST up reply actions

People I talk to have a very love/hate relationship with their menu

but then, if you’re going there for the food, you’re already doing something wrong.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 24, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

I've never had anything that wasn't awesome.

It’s a bit more hoity-toity than you’d expect at a brewery, but even I — a pretty picky eater — can find something delicious every time.

by Teej on Jan 24, 2009 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

I personally have enjoyed everything I've had there

(spud buds yes yes yes) but some people are just really turned off.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 24, 2009 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

Oh yeah. Racer 5 is great.

I think Bear Creek just edges out Anderson Valley and Victory brewing for my favorite new (to me) brewer of the year.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 24, 2009 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

I should have added that my list of new beers isn't nearly as extensive as yours.

That Racer 5 sure made an impression though, wish I’d stockpiled a few.

by Kermit. on Jan 24, 2009 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

I had some Racer 5 a few months ago

loved it. I cannot wait until I come across a case of it for sale.

by katal on Jan 24, 2009 10:17 PM PST up reply actions

Had one at random in a bar, and literally whooped.

They had some at Central Market couple months back, I’m kicking myself for not cleaning them out. Hmmm. Now I shall see if the internet is worth it’s salt, see if I can mail order a case.

by Kermit. on Jan 24, 2009 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

Their website says they ship in WA state, but they don't have an order form.

Least I’m not seeing it. They do provide their contact info, and their website has a link to their WA wholesale distributors. They also market a hoodie with a beer pocket in the front, which would have been nice in college.
I’m calling these fools on Monday. Link.

by Kermit. on Jan 24, 2009 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

Good call about telephoning them

I’ve run into the same confusion before. Like you wrote, the site gives the impression that you can order directly from Bear Republic, but I ,too, have yet to figure out a way to go about doing that.

Thriftway has it

I picked up a Racer 5 in the downtown Renton store last night.

How was Maredsous 10 ?

I got a bottle for the first time, but I’m waiting until after my test Monday try it. VERY excited!

Delirium tremens is a beer? That’s funny…it’s also the name for the shakes that people get when they’re going through alcohol withdrawl.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 24, 2009 1:11 PM PST reply actions

The Maredsous 10 is good, but I prefer the 8.

The alcohol in the 10 is pretty prominent, but the 8 is really nicely balanced. They’re both excellent though.

Have you ever seen a Delirium Tremens bottle? It has a giant pink elephant on it. I love gallows humor.

A nice review of DMZ's book by Phildopip.

Anyone try the Tricerahops by Ninkasi?

I had it at one of the beer festivals, and feel like I remember really enjoying it.

I'd rather know a little about a lot than a lot about a little

Awesome

Robert and I dominated at trivia!

by katal on Jan 24, 2009 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

According to PosPaul's facebookie thingy, there weren't that many people there this morning?

How did the crowd end up looking throughout the day?

Anyone want to report on any good talks?

It was rather sparse around 10-11am

but it got progressively more crowded as the day went on. It was probably at its zenith around 1-2, before people started to leave. When we left the trivia thing around 3 the place was pretty empty.

by katal on Jan 24, 2009 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

oh, TOTALLY

my fanfest post, complete with photos at the end

I am a little sad that I got there too late to see Mark Lowe, though.

by Deanna on Jan 25, 2009 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

maybe they were a lovely gift.

you won’t see them on the field, though.

that little beardlette, however….

Incredibly

I spent a good while trying to think of what it reminds me of, and I couldn’t even do that. He looks like a member of a boy band or something

Here's what it reminds you of, the Landing Strip.

Which is what I’m going to call center field now, if he keeps that thing on his face.

by Kermit. on Jan 25, 2009 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

fanfest was fun, but

the only blog person I found was PositivePaul and his brother-in-law. Seriously.
Zduriencik was great, I showed up just in time to see his panel, when he told trash stories about Scott Boras and admitted he doesn’t have a good nickname for us to spell him by.
People spent way too long asking Lee Tinsley about people stealing from first base.
Aaron Heilman is a huge Pearl Jam fan and Franklin Gutierrez is psyched to be playing in the same outfield with Ichiro and promises to catch everything out there in center.

good times? I guess. I didn’t go down to trivia because it pisses me off every year when I don’t get called up and yet I know more answers than everyone else on stage.

by Deanna on Jan 25, 2009 4:03 AM PST up reply actions

I have a book I won there.

of course, that was before the organized Trivia— I won it by answering a question Rizzs was filling time with before the next Q&A …

Several years ago I just waited until the end when the host just picks people raising their hands.

I sat in the front row for a couple hours and made sure he knew I was waiting to get on.

And actually, the questions are harder to answer when the spotlight is on you, heh. I remember it took me all my time to answer who hit the most home runs in the NL the year before — if I would have missed that question I wouldn’t have been able to show my face to my friends for the rest of the day.

Finished watching MLB networks 2001 Season program.

Aside from reopening old wounds with the Ms, I was annoyed by the repeated references of the Yankees as “America’s Team”. I understand the whole 9/11 aspect and I was in the northeast at the time, but I’ll be damned if I don’t remember every non-Yankee fan I knew being exstatic about the outcome of the WS.

To the XBOX Live crew..

I will hopefully be on soon – for some reason, my component cables are no longer working,so I have to grab a new set of those.. then I will be on!

Only gays play live.

I say this as someone who both can’t afford it, and sucks at most non-sports video games. Madden, anyone? You’ll have to do it at my house…

That was a pretty solid handful of games..

I had to get off for a bit – the roommates looked incredibly bored and I was tired of switching to mute to talk to them

But hey – at least we didn’t suck!

They work

The best guitar I’ve used on the 360 is the old GH2 XPlorer wired guitar. I can’t stand the RB guitars, the strum bar feels too mushy and nonresponsive.
Drums, the GH kit gives you cymbals and the extra pad, but there’s been a lot of complaints about dud pads. The best bass pedal is in the Mad Catz portable drum kit for RB2.

oh caaaaaaanadaaaaaaaa

I can’t say I’ve ever heard it sung by a gospel choir before. Who was that admiring himself for singing the US anthem? I got sidetracked reading Larry Stone on McNamara & the draft … and then torturing myself with the comments

Weird. This dude looks scarily like me. I suppose that’s not a good thing.
