Times Forumites Dislike Us
Apparently, David, Derek, Jeff, Graham, etc. are egotistical assholes.
I venture over to the Times forum every once in a while. I think you get a better idea of the casual fans point of view than you do here or at USSM. And it's a good place to go when you want to get your rosterbation on.
Anyway, they don't seem to think much of USSM/LL leadership.
DISCLAIMER: take the following link for what it's worth. If you don't like venturing over to the Times forum, then I suggest you don't even open the link.

Hey, our old friend rturk89!!
I knew we made the right decision by shipping him off. Look how far he’s fallen.
He's posting on a "far superior" blog now.
You helped him.

just found out why the o's want sherrill
over at dov an o’s insider said they want sherril because they intend to then flip him or jamie walker to the braves for Brent Lillibridge. Now it makes sense why they want sherrill.

I guess I'm just unclear on why the O's would want Sherrill
Can you enlighten me?

You still remember that.
I might as well explain myself. When i said that it was my 1st time ever on LL and i didn’t know shit about stats so i proceeded to act like a dick. I actually love USSM/LL and visit them daily and i have learned a ton just from reading them. I also don’t care about the comment deleting, its their site and they could do whatever they want and its perfectly clear what is and isnt allowed.
Welcome back.
A lot of people here don’t know shit about stats (myself being one of them) but that doesn’t mean we act like dicks to compensate. The problem we had with (and the subsequent comedy gold we got from) your post was that it was repeated multiple times, in several threads, and it had no even remote ring of truth to it – for whatever LL is, it’s not Rumor Central, and it’s certainly not a place to shotgun the same rumor 12 times.
So just don’t do that any more, and we’re all good.

What's even more stupid is they're admitting their rule violations.
I post off topic stuff that gets deleted!
I pissed off Dave / Derek by making an allusion to them giving Chris Snelling fellatio!
Really? They were banned / moderated for those kinds of comments? Holy fuck what a world we live in.

Hilariously, he doesn't even seem to realize how ridiculously off-topic his post actually was.
Patriotism, Pepper, Professionalism
Actually, I think he objects to the whole concept of "off-topic"
and believes he should be able to post a comment about whatever he likes, regardless of whether it has anything to do with what the original post was about or not.
Personally, I enjoy the deletions . . . :)

I wish there were some way to let "power users" (or somesuch) see what was deleted...
…I gotta say, sometimes I’m deeply intrigued by what I missed, especially when Dave or Derek offer a cryptic reply in their deletion note.
Patriotism, Pepper, Professionalism
But then you have to consider if they have ever said anything intriguing in the first place.
It’s like people who tell you to not watch something like 2girls1cup. You feel like you are missing out, but when you do find out, you realize it wasn’t worth knowing.
I like that comparison

Well someone in that thread made sense
“I’ve made plenty of posts that contend with what Dave and Derek have posted. I think that as long as you keep your comments relevant to what was originally posted, they won’t moderate them.”
Seriously, is it that hard to understand?
Heh
Speaking for the USSM mods, we actually let a lot of stuff slide that we really COULD delete, per the stated rules of the site.
I try to leave things alone unless they’re really egregious or are going to inevitably lead to a hopeless thread derail.
So the claims of “extreme censorship” are pretty funny.

I got a nice e-mail from a USSM mod once after one of my comments was deleted accidentally.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Reading the PI and Times forums is about as enjoyable as walking balls first into a wheat thresher.
Why did the chicken cross the road?

You know you should look away, but it’s so damn hard to do so. If anything, the site offers some great comedy relief.

I usually get about half a dozen comments down, then it dissolves.
Soon as I hit the “But Bonds took STEROIDS” moment, my eyes go blind.

Couldn't any of the complainers just start their own blog and post their disagreements there?
Boom, no censorship! (Well, as long as you didn’t violate the provider’s terms of service, but still)
Also, that thread turned into an informal plug for Bleeding Blue and Teal.
I don't think Times Forumites dislike this blog at all...
One person on the Times forum says…
Lookout Landing isn’t much better in regards to comments
and supposedly the whole forum hates LL?
I started the USS Mariner sucks thread and I was definitely exaggerating. I love the USSM site, I just hate the way they moderate their comments.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 1:49 PM PST reply actions
Why on earth would you start a thread like that?
Are you in the third grade?
Seriously – if you don’t like it, don’t read it. If you don’t like the way they mod, don’t fall afoul of their well-published and easily-understood guidelines, and then bitch about it?
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I don't know why I ended that with a question mark.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Thread
I made that thread because I wanted to see what others thought about their comment guidelines and moderation. I do like it, and I do read it. I just don’t like how they mod it and was wondering if anyone else thought the same. Obviously others thought their comment guidelines were a little too strict as well. If I can go back again I would stress that I only think their comment moderation sucks, not the USSM site as I made it look.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 4:03 PM PST up reply actions
Okay, but still
Starting a thread with “USS Mariner sucks” as the title is classless and (in this case) misleading, since you obviously don’t think the whole site sucks – if you don’t like how they mod it, it’s probably smarter to email the mods directly with your concerns instead of going the “OMGTHISSUCKS” route.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Yeah
You’re right. It was very classless and misleading and if I really wanted to see what others though I should have just posted an easy going Thread asking what people thought of the moderation.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 4:08 PM PST up reply actions

ps about the comments thing. I think I was just bitter that my fourth comment ever posted on their got deleted. I guess I could have read the comment guidelines thing before I started posting.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 1:52 PM PST reply actions
Must not.....mock.......their......
Allure……too…….strong…..
no right to bitch?
Even if I read their guidelines I would bitch about them because the guidelines are kinda ridiculous. I am all for deleting comments that are actually off-topic and spam and all that but my comment was not too far off-topic as all I was saying was what I thought about another guy who was on the trade block. My comment wasn’t anymore off-topic than the comments about ‘hey, you should add Dunn to DH instead of LF and see what happens’…even though Dunn is a LF FA and as of now refuses to DH. Those kind of comments weren’t off-topic and a comment saying that a certain guy would cost a lot less than Swisher and may be almost as efficient bang for buck wise is?
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 4:06 PM PST reply actions
I honestly think that USS is incredibly patient with the commenter
when it comes to moderation. They allow many things over there that wouldn’t be tolerated here.
by JI on Jan 22, 2009 4:13 PM PST up reply actions
As soon as you buy them all the equipment they need, pay them to write whatever they want and pay the moderators for their time
you can bitch about the guidelines. Otherwise you have to play by their rules or not comment. They’re not at all sneaky; they spell things out in black and white.
by Aaron Campeau on Jan 22, 2009 4:17 PM PST up reply actions
No
One of the [off-topic] deletions told me to read the comment guidelines so I did. I didn’t want to waste mine or their time by trying to say that it should or shouldn’t have been deleted through e-mail. I would rather ask people whether or not they thought that they were trigger happy on marking things [off-topic] and see what others thought.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 4:26 PM PST up reply actions
So before getting their side of the story you decided to slag them publicly?
Seems reasonable.
by Aaron Campeau on Jan 22, 2009 4:31 PM PST up reply actions
I don't need their side of the story
It’s their site they can do whatever they want and they don’t have to defend anything.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 4:41 PM PST up reply actions
Then, whether or not you intend it that way,
it makes you come across as someone who would rather just bitch and tear down other people than put in effort to be a contributing member of a community. An attitude like that will fly elsewhere, but it will not last at USSM or here.
Yeah
I did come across like that. It’s unfortunate. Oh well. I can’t see anything too bad coming out of it except me looking like an ass for a few days and some new users who read the times forum thread maybe being afraid to comment or something…which I highly doubt will happen.
by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Jan 22, 2009 4:45 PM PST up reply actions
That's a very stand-up thing to say
You don’t look an idiot now. Yes, it clearly riles people up when their comments get deleted – both because it shuts off particular topics and because it equates your comment with the myriad ‘YOU TALK LIKE A FAG AND YOUR SHITS ALL RETARDED’ comments they get.
I understand where USSM’s reputation comes from, but it’s really, really not true. As Dave can probably tell you, I disagree with him all the time these days (it’s getting a bit odd, really), and I’ve not had a post nuked. I think those of us here who post on both get angry when we see more iterations of the old canard that Dave is so thin-skinned that he can’t handle dissent or something. That’s not what they’re doing there, and it seems like you realize that, so we’re cool.
I have to give you props, Roy.
For showing up here and admitting a level of guilt on this matter. Like Marc said, the rep over at USSM, and perhaps here, as I consider both places to be similar in nature, is unwarranted.
You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen.
Matthew, Jeff, delete this if you want but:
Roy, despite what you might think, we’re never, EVER looking to delete someone’s comment, and we let a lot of things slide that we really should delete (and almost always end up regretting that we didn’t, when it snowballs and ruins a comment thread).
Here are some productive things you can do if you feel a comment was deleted unfairly:
1) Read the comment guidelines. You don’t have to like them, but if you want to post in comment threads, you have to follow them. It’s Dave, Derek, and Jason’s sandbox, and if you want to play in it, you play by their rules. Make sure your comment doesn’t violate either the spirit or the letter of any of them.
2) Email the authors at the address provided on the site; calmly and rationally explain why you feel that your comment shouldn’t have been deleted. Dave and Derek DO read emails sent to that address, and have given feedback to us volunteer mods before. We all do this on a volunteer basis, and we screw up sometimes. But (with the possible exception of Graham) we’re not some powerhungry jerks that sit at our keyboards with our fingers hovering over the delete button, just waiting to pounce on a post. Within reason, we want everyone to have their fair say.
I didn’t see your comment that you were upset about, so I can’t say whether it should have been deleted or not; but chances are there was a very good reason for it, even if you didn’t think so.
My real motives behind moderating USS Mariner are far more nefarious than merely being a power-hungry jerk
