Felix gets $3.8 million, avoids arb
This according to Jayson Stark.
The Seattle Mariners have signed pitcher Felix Hernandez, who was eligible for arbitration for the first time, to a one-year contract worth $3.8 million.
The Mariners and the right-hander have explored multiyear deals over the last two offseasons, but without success. Hernandez can't become a free agent until after the 2011 season.
Not bad for the M's, considering Felix was worth $17.1 million last year, and should be even better this season.
I still hope they can come to an agreement on a multi-year deal, but for now, I can accept this.

It's a steal for this year, but what happens if Felix finally has a breakout year?
Buying out his arb years becomes a lot more expensive. Goddammit, why couldn’t they get something done long-term this year?

Right there
With you. But at least it shows the two sides are willing to talk to each other, instead of leaving everything up to an arb board.

a willingness to talk is far less promising than substantive progress on a long-term deal
which none of us believe is imminent. further, this stopgap deal (though admittedly better than an arbitration board) evidences how far apart the two parties really are.
If Felix wins the Cy
his arb award next season is going to be $20 million.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
I expected a higher number, but good for Felix.
It’s gotta be nice to get that first seven-figure contract. At the age of 22, no less.
Yeah, I remember my first seven-figure contract
I got mine at 25. Unfortunately, the first two of those seven figures were zero, and the third was a 2, but still.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Don't forget the decimal point!

Booya!
Anybody gonna argue that arb is based on performance still? Just needed to drive the point home.

Sorry for gloating. Didn't mean to sound like as much of an ass.

It's all good.
I think we were in agreement on the general idea. All I was saying is that performance is definitely a factor, and good players get more money than bad players — just not to a great degree. My “performance matters a lot” was overstating it, probably.
Yeah i think like most arguements
We started at the edges because its easier (and more fun) to argue like that. In the end as always, reality is a compromise between the two.

Hopefully Felix was asking for $3M
And the brass surprised him with a bonus $800K. Probably didn’t happen, but all I want is for the FO to keep him happy.
