Lowe---> America's Team

The Braves have reached preliminary agreement with free-agent right-hander Derek Lowe on a four-year, $60 million contract, according to major-league sources.

The deal, first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is pending a physical.

Lowe, 36, is the third starting pitcher added by the Braves this season, joining right-hander Javier Vazquez and Japanese right-hander Kenshin Kawakami.

...so says Rosenthal

The Cards fan in me says "Aw nutsack..."

Hope it was worth your soul; enjoy staring at this for the next four years Derek:

Huh.

I read this headline as Mark Lowe going to the WBC for Team America…

Good for the Braves, and a good fit for Derek, probably…

I did, actually.

It was the only way to watch Expos games (but only when they played Atlanta).

I don’t recall the “America’s Team” moniker.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

It was the only way for most of us to watch NL games.

I didn’t have cable, but I’d watch Dale Murphy battle Andre Dawson, and it sort of put my ’Mickey Brantley is an under appreciated star" rant into context.
Glad I got to see Raines/Dawson though…

Yeah

I never think of the Braves as America’s team. Hell, they probably wouldn’t be Georgia’s team if they weren’t the only one there.

I did, so what?

Doesnt mean they are America’s team just because they are on TV everyday.

They were called "America's Team" throughout the 80's and into the 90's

because they were the first team to be on TV every day – I was a Braves fan when I was a kid simply because they were always on.

Yeah - Dale Murphy and some losers

and good ol’ Zane Smith, the “I was a scary looking lefty with a mullet before RJ” guy.

Ditto

Until the mid 90s I think I knew more about the Braves than I did about the Mariners.

You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.

A lot of people here (Wisconsin) were Braves fans, at least when I was younger.

Now that the Brewers are semi-relevant and the Braves have stopped winning every year, some people are jumping off the bandwagon, but some stayed.

Where would we put him?

If we could convince Batista or Silva to do the samurai thing and help the team by impaling themselves on a broken bat then yes, absolutely go for it. Otherwise there isn’t really room on the roster or payroll for him. But yeah, I’d sure love it. He would also be great to have around Felix, seeing as he goes to his curve a full 1/3 of the time.

Yes

Add value where you can add value.

by JI on Jan 13, 2009 12:01 PM PST up reply actions

Sure sure I know

but there’s some talk about there being a salary cap of sorts on the team and there is a surplus of starters. So while I’m not saying it’s wrong thing to do, I have a hard time imagining Jack Z being able to convince ownership that they need to go over their proposed payroll limit for another starter.
But again, if it happens I’m buying a round for everyone within earshot.

by Bearskin Rugburn on Jan 13, 2009 12:07 PM PST up reply actions

Well, I'm not sure if there's a hard cap being imposed by ownership.

Really, it’s one of two cases:

1) Cap is “self-imposed” in that the team would prefer to spend money internally and save for 2010, which should also be a buyer’s market, rather than overpay for free agents this offseason. I don’t completely agree with this since there are some great deals to be had right now.

2) Cap is imposed by ownership, and is therefore restricting Z’s movements in a market where cheap talent is available. Also not good, since that implies ownership is still dumb and still holds a degree of power over the GM.

by JLC on Jan 13, 2009 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

Or 3)

There is no cap, and it’s just posturing.

by JLC on Jan 13, 2009 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

Well yeah

But if I could punt Washbrun or put Silva in the bullpen…

if hes not already there...

he’s getting close.

a few more tacos, and his pants won’t be able to fit around his fat ass. Safeco is a big park, but come on. Consider the fans Carlos, don’t block our view of the game.

Carlos Silva doesn't suck because he's fat.

Carlos Silva sucks because he sucks. (If he even sucks, which I’m not convinced he does; I think he’s due for a regression to average and is simply overpaid, but that’s not my point.)

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 13, 2009 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

It think being fat has something to do with it

but the sarcasm in the inital post was missed

Not by me.

And I’m still skeptical that he would be better if he lost weight.

by Aaron Campeau on Jan 13, 2009 1:49 PM PST up reply actions

Wasn't he plagued by back issues last season?

That very well could go away if he lost weight.

But you and Dave both look pretty chicken sh!t when you REALLY had the chance:

Good idea

We need a reliever who can come in and get the groundball double play.

by JLC on Jan 13, 2009 12:26 PM PST up reply actions

Screw that Lopez and Yubet can't catch anything

Unless we can get a pitcher who only allows groundballs towards third base

OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE
A major league scout told the Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley that the Angels have expressed interest in Jermaine Dye.

Sun Times via Roto.
My god, they could have the worst outfield in the history of everything.

This gives me an idea. Mariners should open a new subterfuge department where they train scouts and experts to give bad advice to divisional rivals. They can improve the team without altering the roster!

I'm still dancing! There's only one major hurdle I anticipate for Zduriencik.

That’s time. I’m worried too much of the fanbase bought into the idea that the M’s were really close to being competitive, that they bought into the false promises of Bavasi. Public opinion is a touchy thing, I hope it swings in support of Zduriencik and he has the time he needs to work things out.

Kind of a crap deal given how teams have been behaving.

Nothing like an intradivisional bidding war to reset marginal win cost back to 08.

by Bearskin Rugburn on Jan 13, 2009 11:47 AM PST reply actions

Nah, there were a lot of strange circumstances leading up to this:

C.C. and Burnett were classic Yanks splurge-overpays (they’re cash-flush and can do whatever the hell they please…and they’ll probably end up hating the Burnett K). Lowe, on the other hand, was a panic move on the part of an organization that was/is having The Offseason From Hell, what with the loss of Smoltz, the Furcal kerfuffle, the loss of the Burnett bidding, etc. They needed Lowe to restore some of their credibility with the fanbase as much as anything else (and their rotation was hurting anyway).

Honestly, I tend to think Lowe will earn most of his keep in Atlanta. A workhorse sinkerballer who’s remaining in the NL? He’ll probably be alright at $15M/year.
