Mariners Event = Amazing
For those of you who decided not to attend the Mariners event yesterday, hosted by USSM and LL, you should be ashamed of yourself. The event was amazingly informative, and entertaining.
Derek at USSM ran his thoughts on the event last night, and I wanted to wait until after he posted to run mine (wanted to see what was off limits and such).
First, I was very happy with how the event was run. Getting in and out was very smooth and easy. Although having to go up to the seventh floor of the library to take a piss was somewhat of an inconvenience.
Second, the Mariners guys were outstanding in terms of the depth of their answers. Although we cannot share everything to the world, they were pretty open with their thoughts, and tried not to hold back as much as possible.
On another note, there was some questions they could not answer, which makes sense, because they don't want to tip their hand his free agency not over, and the draft upcoming.
They had a very open view on statistics, and how they will be used in the organization. Once again, I just want to thank them for hiring Tango
I think Derek said pretty much everything else in his article, so I won't impede on his work. If you get a chance to go to an event in the future, I highly suggest it.

I do not feel ashamed.
And neither does my wallet because it would have taken $500+ to get there.

Seriously!
Not only am I at work for another two weeks, but I am 2000 miles away. Like I wouldn’t be there right fucking now if I could be?

different
Well that’s a bit different. I was talking about if you chose not to go, and were available, then you should be ashamed. Well worth the price of gas and $10 fee.
Although, my ass hurt pretty bad afterward. 4 hrs in a hard seat is not the most pleasant thing in the world.

I regret not paying the $500+ to get there
but it was either this or Opening Day and I decided I’d rather go to Opening Day

I really like Blengino's sense of humor
but I didn’t really like Pedro’s old school answers to everything or how much name dropping Carmen was doing (he seemed to be a lot more about who he knew than what he knew.)
On the whole they seemed like a good balanced team and reflected well on Dr. Z.

I agree...
…somewhat about Carmen. Although, most of our questions were directed towards Ton B. and Mac, so it was hard for Carmen to get into it.
And yeah, Pedro seems a bit too stuck in the old school ways for this organization. Maybe he is run out of town in the next years.

Hmm
I was really impressed with Pedro— I wasn’t thrilled with his answer about Felix, but Felix isn’t his job: he got him to the big leauges, now that’s up to the rest of the front office.
I think a Director of Player Development needs to have more of an old school touch with the players- he knew the plan for every player in the system, from nutrition to pitch development. I have little doubt that he understands stats well and and can push whatever philosophies Z and Tony come up with.
Its the GMs and AGMs jobs to come up with the org’s development culture.

I was bummed because of his answer to my question about how the team
works with injury prevention. They seem to stress getting stronger and faster, but they aren’t exactly learning from Ichiro about flexibility. I just think it would be cool if they could force everyone important on the team to start doing yoga. And I think it would be cool if they could notice when a guy like Ibanez is obviously hurt and DL him whether he likes it or not.

While I agree that the team would be better if everyone did yoga
I can see a lot of players refusing to do yoga because it’s not manly enough.

At some point you can only work out your body so much
And I’d rather have more Beltre’s and less Bloomquists. Ichiro is a freak and is so amazing because of his quickness and speed. Flexibility isn’t bad and probably helps prevent injury but I don’t think flexibility will improve your slash line.

But it helps prevent injury.
That’s huge. That’s a significant loss of downside.

Just fyi
There were bathrooms around the corner from the escalators on that floor; the friend I was with had let me know prior to the start of the thing. Having a children’s level with no bathrooms seems sort of nonsensical…
I enjoyed it. I think it might have been maybe half an hour too long, but really, it seemed like questions were slowing down around 5 or so anyway. I think an actual formal break might have been a tad chaotic, with as many people as there were, but what do I know.
Anyway, yes, good times.

I saw the bathroom
near the escalators, but when I went to use them, the maintence guys were working on it, so I was left unfullfilled (or should I say, still filled?)
