OTPOTW 10/11 Jan, Drunken guitar edition
Back by popular demand it's the weekend edition of the OTPOTD for the weekend and all. Hopefully all the folks are finding out a bunch of cool shit at the USSM/LL event that us porr unfortunate souls are unable to attend. That's all drunken Rob has got. OK, that wasn;t long enough so let me ask a couple of questions that I think I already asked in my tags - What are you're guilty pleasures as for as music goes? We all have great taste in music but what about those of us that just love to sing along with Beyonce even though we know it's canned for the masses? Yeah, we know it is. But it's still damn fun to sing along at the top of your lungs. Speaking of Beyonce, I can't get enough of Irreplaceable.

My problem was I had three glasses of wine with lunch yesterday (company party),
but then I went out last night and put beer and shots on top of it, then thought Denny’s was a great plan.

I actually love Denny's boneless buffalo wings.
Though that’s likely more due to me being in the States not very often.

I bowl better with booze apparently.
Last night, First game, I scored a 50. A 50! I don’t know how I could do that. Second game I scored a 102 after drinking a couple beers.

I was throwing too hard and my ball was going in random directions.
The second game I embraced my inner Jaime Moyer, and started throwing more controlled, slower throws, and I actually didn’t suck terribly. Progress!

I'm not sure I'd say I have great taste in music.
I’ve had a couple people call me musically retarded, or that I should off myself because I didn’t know anything about music.
But some fun drunken Karaoke songs though? Hell yeah. I can do that.
Don’t Stop Believing, Beat It, Never Gonna Give You Up, Total Eclipse of the Heart. All fun songs to kareoke to.

I’d never been a fan of karaoke at all, but one time a million years ago I got drunk enough for my friends to convince me I was the greatest singer of all time. So I did Under The Bridge in front of a bunch of screaming Spaniards in Mallorca. I smartly retired my karaoke career shortly thereafter.

I just finished installing the Windows 7 64-bit beta on my machine
I know there were some people here interested in it, so here’s a few general notes and impressions:
*The Microsoft servers are up and running again, so head here to get a copy of the ISO and install key.
*The beta DOES NOT require you to have Vista SP1 installed on your machine before hand
*You will have to burn the ISO image to a blank DVD.
*Installation takes about 30-40 minutes. I’d guess that is due to the fact that the files seem to be heavily compressed in order to fit on one single-layer DVD.
*You will need an internet connection to validate your install key.
*The beta is good until August of this year.
The good:
-Relatively quick boot time
-Fully addresses the 4GB of regular RAM plus the 1GB of GPU RAM in my computer
-Fully compatible with Nividia’s 64-bit GeForce drivers
-My mobo (P5N32E-SLI) had all necessary drivers pre-loaded on the install disk. Didn’t have to install additional drivers
-The interface is sleek and appears to be more responsive than it’s Vista counterpart. Things open up quickly for me without any stuttering.
-Everything is very, very pretty. I know that sounds rather silly and pointless, but this OS is very easy on the eyes. In my mind it’s a nice blend of the good things from MacOSX and Windows XP.
-Appears to be stable. I’ve put it through a few stress tests and it’s handled admirably.
The bad:
-There is a glitch with MP3s. The first three seconds of any song are cut off. However, Microsoft has issued this fix. I do give them props for addressing this so quickly.
-I’m not all that sold on the network interface. If there’s an option to switch things to a more XP-friendly setup, I’ve yet to find it. I’m still working on being able to allow other people to connect directly to two of my hard drives. I’d say it’s a bit too “user-friendly” for it’s own good.
-As the case with just about every other operating system out there, you need to have either a second hard drive or somehow repartition a single hard drive to have two partitions. If you’re planning to dual-boot, make sure you take care of this before installing.
Overall I’ve got to agree with what Robert has been saying for a while concerning this system. It appears to be stable, it looks good, and it’s fairly quick. Definitely less of a resource hog than Vista was. For those who never used Vista and stuck with XP, it’s a bit of a departure, but so far it appears to be worthwhile.
Anybody want to know anything specific about Windows 7?

I’d give Windows 7 a look to get your hands on DirectX 10.

I am still going to wait and let people find the problems it may end up having. I usually give it 3-6 months after the initial release.

I meant the retail release.
My brother is my beta tester. He does everything to it and let’s me know if it’s good to go. I still give it 3-6 after it’s retail release because sometimes things come up. I don’t mind waiting, especially because Mac OSX is my primary use.

Found an ethernet driver that works, so I'm coming to you live from Windows 7!
Couldn’t find a audio driver that will work, Oh well. Considering this motherboard is 5 years old that isn’t surprising. I did find a Vista driver for my audio card in my main machine though, so I imagine if I installed 7 on it, the sound would be fine, so no biggy. Like you said, Nvidia drivers loaded up without a problem.
The following programs do not work:
Daemon Tools
Alcohol 120%
The following are confirmed to work:
Firefox 3
Thunderbird
AVG 8.0
Zap Pro(even though it said during the beginning of the install that it wouldn’t be compatible it still installed and is working anyways)
Bitpim
Adobe Flash Player
Java
Utorrent
VLC Player
WinRar
I have the same programs loaded at startup as I do on my main machine. Startup time is 2 minutes, 37 seconds. Shut down time is 24 seconds. By comparision my main machine is 41 seconds and 21 seconds respectively. That shutdown time is fantastic considering how old the machine is. The startup time could be improved however.
In general the OS handles pretty good. Some things are gonna take some getting used to, Not sure I like the new quick launch feature in this new taskbar.
Overall a very good first impression. It handles better than Vista already on this machine, and it’s just a beta. I look forward to further testing.

Hearing that Windows 7 works that well on that old of a machine is excellent news.
So far I’m pretty happy with this OS. I’ve sent an e-mail out to my co-workers in the IT department and have told them to get their hands on a beta key so they can try it on their test computers at the office.
There’s going to come a point in time where my company is going to need to move off of XP. With the time I’ve spent with Windows 7 so far and the announcement that there will be an Enterprise licensing system, this is starting to look like a viable OS for the office.

I’m pulling for the Ravens, though, because that would mean the AFC Championship Game would be in San Diego if the Chargers win tomorrow. That would be all kinds of fun. And hilarious, considering the Chargers’ record.

so one week is ~ 1,000 Brett Favre retirement stories. One month is ~4,000.

Yeah, sure helped me out today.
My only experience driving in Seattle without somebody with me to help navigate is going to Safeco, which is just right off the highway so it’s easy. Driving downtown to get to that library and then getting back on I-5 afterwards would of been a nightmare without the GPS.

The only difference between using the GPS and using my brain is that the first time I go to a place, I’m likely not going to get horribly lost.

I think GPS's and driving direction applications have a good purpose
If you’re totally unfamiliar with the area it’s good to run the thing to see what directions it spits out at you, to get a general idea as to what exit to get off at, etc, and then look at a paper map to correct its errors. For instance, anything that says “do a u-turn” is probably inefficient and needs to be corrected manually

I have google maps on my cell phone, and I keep a local Thomas Guide on hand at all times
My phone has GPS, but I just use that to save time when pinpointing my location. I have it give me directions, read them once, look at the outline on the map, and then I’m good to go. I love using a real map for all the reasons you’ve mentioned.

I'm so pissed that I missed the Q&A yesterday
I went to the Muckleshoot Casino with my brother on Friday and left at like 3:45 in the morning. On the way home, my car started to knock and rattle, and ended up losing power completely right as I reached an off-ramp. I coasted to the bottom, and then a cop car pushed my car into a parking lot. I therefore had no transportation to get there.
Anybody else had car trouble completely ruin awesome plans before?

What is a good roulette startegy?
Is there one? I have played it once and it was completely random guessing on my part, no strategy at all. However, there was a table down in the Bahamas over Christmas break, and looking at the last numbers played, a number was hit back-to-back on over half the board. Too bad the minimum bet was $50. I would have played the last number over and over.

Example of what I meant:
24
24
7
16

21
21
4
8
8
I am not even joking around. I didn’t stay to watch to see if anybody caught on. But if they did, they would have made bank.
by Wilder. on Jan 11, 2009 12:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Holy crap that goes way against the odds (obviously)
And no, I don’t think there is really any strategy to it, just make sure that you maximize what you put out on the table. Single numbers pay 35 to 1, so make sure that if you are playing for a single number to put a few chips out for some of the other high-paying bets that touch the same number (3 number row, 4 corners, split number). With 35-1 odds on straight up bets, you can theoretically put a dollar bet on every number on the board and lose 2 bucks, so play a few straight ups and some 8, 11, and 17-1 bets (mentioned earlier) and you’ll usually come out ok, especially if you put in some time at it

I think there must have been something wrong with the table.
The odds of what was happening were too good. I wouldn’t be surprised if they switched out the wheel and ball soon after I left.

The Royals are a better team for signing Willie Bloomquist, while the M’s become even less watchable. For Seattle, it’s tough to think that the battle cry for 2009 is, ‘Wait Until Next Year.’
