How about Smoltz?

Seems like there are a lot of oldies out there that will have a uniform yanked away from them and won't get to play anymore but hey maybe some of them deserve one last chance...

Star-divide

So Smoltz he's injured and old but should we give him one last shot at pitching say a 1 year 1-3 million contract with incentives or something. He could be an asset in the rotation or bullpen as he put up pretty solid numbers before this year and can also mentor our young pitchers but then again he is injured and just suck to the nth power. What do you guys think?

John Smoltz is the shit

so of course we should have interest

but realistically it’s probably Atlanta, a WS contender of retirement. I can’t see him having any interest in Seattle.

Yeah it looks that way...

I don’t know maybe they’ve moved on from Smoltz I would love it if he came to Seattle but it doesn’t seem realistic however he is 41 without a job so far so maybe who knows…

Maybe that came off a tad on the aggressive side.

what I’m saying is the best way to improve a team is to address the biggest weaknesses first, and the middle of the rotation is not that. The right side of the infield/DH is.

And ten runs is better

so if you can give the team a ten run improvement for the same cost maybe it’d be better to do that. I don’t think he plays for less than $10 if it’s not in Atlanta, and those $10, if they have to be spent, I’d rather spend on an infielder because the potential improvement will be far greater.

Then that is your argument. Which I agree with for what it's worth.

Just don’t coach in the way you did above, because forsaking any improvement because it improves an area that’s not currently your biggest weakness is a hallmark of Bavasi-era role thinking.

Hmmm....

Smoltz played for $14M last year. Even with the understanding that he’s going to take a pay cut because he couldn’t stay healthy last year, I’d think he’d want at least $7M on a one-year deal. If you could convince him to be the closer and that would make everyone more comfortable with Morrow in the rotation, I think that even at $7M, it could be a solid move.

Ultimately, I’d agree with JI—I don’t see Smoltz having any interest in Seattle at this point in his career. He’s been a Brave his entire career and probably wants to stay there or go to an obviously contending team.

Yeah this was dangerously close to rosterbation...

Smoltz would definitely be a great pick up for this team he can fit in as closer or start but he just doesn’t seem to have any reason to go unless he had nowhere else to go.

I tend to think of rosterbation as a huge digression that involves looking at the entire roster and making multiple pie-in-the-sky trades to enact change

You just wanted to look at the merits of adding a free agent pitcher to the roster. I think that’s pretty standard hot stove fare.
