9-7-08 OTPOTD Metallica Edition

My turn to start one of these things. And the starting topic is going be Metallica's new album "Death Magnetic". Due out officially on Friday, here's a review for those of you who might want to acquire Metallica's latest creation, song by song.

Star-divide

1.That Was Just Your Life(7:08)- The first thing I notice about this song is that the opening riff sounds kinda like the opening riff of the theme song to "Beast Wars:Transformers". Which is a good omen, because that show kicked ass. The 2nd thing I notice is that this isn't St.Anger. And thank god for that. The snare drum is reduced and it blends into the song instead of completely overpowering it. This is a good song and a nice opener. A sign that maybe, just maybe this album might not suck.

2.The End of the Line(7:52)/3.Broken, Beat & Scarred(6:25)- The reason I put these two songs together is because they kinda blend together. There isn't anything that stands out about them. That's not to say they are bad songs, just simply kinda meh. But still miles better than anything that was on St.Anger.

4.The Day That Never Comes(7:56)- This is the first single that Metallica released on their website a few weeks back. After listening to it a few times, I've revised my opinion. It's a pretty good song. The first few minutes are a little weak and there's section where we hear this: "Love is a four letter word, and never spoke here. Love is a four letter word, here in this prison." Really Metallica? Love is a four letter word? Really? Ugh. But just when you think this song is heading towards shitsville, you hit the 5:00 mark and.........a Guitar Solo! Holy shit a guitar solo! I didn't think Metallica did those anymore! And it's an awesome solo at that. It takes you through the rest of the song and just kicks ass. I think this is Kirk Hammet unleashing some frustration from the last album.

5.All Nightmare Long(7:58)- This song starts off alright for the first 30 seconds or so. You're listening to it and thinking "Hmm, this is decent." and then you hit the :37 mark.....BAM! The song grabs you by the throat and shoves you into a fucking wall! This song is vintage Metallica. It's hard, it's fast, it's thrash, it's fucking metal! This song could be straight off Ride the Lighting and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Bottom line: An awesome song that could be in the top 10 of Metallica's library when it's all said and done. Awesome!

6.Cyanide(6:39)- I didn't really like this song for some reason. It's not an abomination or anything, but it wasn't something I really reacted too all that much. I don't know, maybe it'll sound better after I listen to it a few more times.

7.The Unforgiven III(7:46)- This is the song that I was worried about. Song sequels rarely work(some notable exceptions being Megadeth's Hangar 18 and Return to Hangar) and The Unforgiven II sucked. And I swore if I heard Hetfield utter the words "And I'm Unforgiven THREEEEEEEEE!!!" I was going to delete the entire Metallica library from my computer and set fire to every CD I have. But he doesn't, in fact the word Unforgiven doesn't appear at all in this song. The word forgive does a few times though. All and all, a decent song, but I'm hoping this is the end of the Unforgiven story.

8.The Judas Kiss(8:00)- This is probably my 2nd favorite song on the album. Good riffs, good lyrics, and a nice solo. Just an excellent all around song.

9.Suicide & Redemption(9:57)- This one is an instrumental and it's a good one. It isn't as epic as The Call to Ktulu or Orion, but it's still a good song. The longest song on the album(though instrumentals generally are).

10.My Apocalypse(5:01)- Lars starts to turn the snare drum up again at some points, but it doesn't get too obnoxious. Overall a solid song to close the album out with.

You'll notice that this album is really long, ending up at just under an hour and 15 minutes for 10 songs.Damn.Overall, I enjoyed Death Magnetic. Easily the best album Metallica has done since ...And Justice For All, in fact it's close to being it's equal. It proves that while Metallica's best days are obviously behind them, the rumors of their demise were certainly premature. If you are a Metallica fan or just a metal fan in general, this album is certainly worth your money or your bandwidth.

I'm a diehard Metallica fan.

I’ve only heard the 6 songs released on their site (http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?item=601197) but I’m pleasantly surprised. Out of the stuff I’ve listened too, I think your review pretty much nails it. Some of the vocals are pretty weak and Lars does seem to get carried away at times but overall it’s some of the best I’ve heard from them in atleast 15 years. And more importantly, the guitar solo makes its triumphant return (although it seems like Kurt stole some of the DragonForce effects pedals for a few of them).

This is very much a tour through their entire discography. You can sit down and pinpoint which song portions seem like they could very well have been pulled from which album. For the first part of The Day That Never Comes all I could think about was Load (which is not where you want a song to be headed), but all of a sudden at the 4 minute mark, bam, your in the middle of Master of Puppets. Now none of these songs would be showstoppers on any of the hallmark 80s Metallica albums, but a few of them could fit in comfortably as a mid-teir peice, and that’s saying a hell of alot considering where this band has been for the last dozen or so years.

And finally, good god does All Nightmare Long kick ass. Your right, it just has Ride the Lightening written all over it. I can’t wait to go out and actually buy the whole thing (yes actually look through the liner notes, because I’m a dork like that).

I thought the Day That Never Comes is terrible

Hetfield has always been a terrible singer, so ballady stuff only works in very small doses. It sounds like a Fade to Black/ Sanitarium ripoff.

by JI on Sep 7, 2008 10:14 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah

It’s the standard Metallica formula for a ballad – acoustic intro, slow verse, heavy/slightly faster chorus, repeat a few times, then the outro which is just rocking out with lots of solos – Sanitarium, Fade to Black, One, all follow this formula, this one just isn’t pulled off as well.

Single I heard on the radio had some riffs that reminded me of 'One".

But I also have tinnitus. Was wondering what that Death Magnetic comment was about yesterday(ish). Looking forward to your review of AC/DC’s new album. And read that with a hopeful tone.

Yeah, much better than St. Anger

But then again, the laws of the universe prevent a record worse than St. Anger from existing. This is not a top-notch metal album. JI is right, James needs to stop singing and return to his old yelling riffage style – which he is, or at least was, good at. The album seems so sterile to me. I don’t like the production at all. I’m still debating whether I’m a fan of the guitar tone or not, which probably means that I’m not. Obviously Metallica remembered how to play galloping, “chuga chuga” choruses, which is good, but the lyrics and songwriting are really sub-par. These songs need to be about 3 minutes long, not 7. Lars’ drumming is boring at best, but it’s mostly just annoying. The dude must NEVER practice, because he’s done nothing but digress since …And Justice For All.

Surprisingly, I liked Kirk’s solos more than anything else on this album. They’re sloppy and thrashy and dirty, and Kirk really reminded everyone with this album that he’s pretty damn good at that style. If any member of Metallica is “back”, it’s definitely him.

Just some opinions… I don’t listen to traditional thrash that much anymore, so maybe thrash people think the album is great, and my tastes have just changed…

by Manzanillos Cup on Sep 7, 2008 3:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

My tastes haven't changed.

If someone did an album that sounds like Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning, I’d pimp it.

There’s a reason I mostly now only listen to music coming out of Scandinavia.

Was Lars ever a good drummer?

It just seems like he is good at the double-bass pedal and keeps a solid beat, but nothing special otherwise. I’m not a drummer or a music expert by any means and could be convinced otherwise.

Be open minded about what you don't know.

by Jed MC on Sep 8, 2008 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was fast

That was pretty much it.

Compared to genuinely good metal drummers like Nicko McBrain he’s nothing special at all.

I'l go so far as to say this:

Lars was an interesting drummer only when he was playing Cliff Burton’s rhythms. Burton was a student of the great prog acts from the ’70s, and his rhythms hold the evidence of that.

There’s some great prog on YouTube.

Thou art wise

Wait, you’re talking about bands like Lordi and HIM, right?

jk

by Manzanillos Cup on Sep 7, 2008 6:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not surprising really.

I’ve figured out that my tastes in music radically differ from those of the community as whole. Because generally when music is discussed I have never heard of most of the bands people talk about here.

Plus it appears that the daily off topic threads are dieing out.

Ever just want to talk about baseball all the time during the season? I get like that sometimes.

Especially the conversations here, I’m picking up a lot of different perspectives for viewing the game. But the music, some of you guys start breaking down session artists, producers, even recording studios for albums or songs. Interesting to follow, but join in? Hell no! Unless you guys like getting pestered with questions all the time, but I imagine it would get a bit annoying.

Most of the people here that break it down to that level actually record music, though

so it’s inevitable it would get to that point. This is, in fairness, an “off topic” thread, meaning there’s probably not a lot of baseball content in here…

Oh, not complaining about the lack of baseball content. I enjoy the conversations in the OT!

I can see where it helps the GT stay on-topic, I’ve noticed people like to take time to compare their days, shoot the breeze, unload what’s on their minds before any event. Meetings, games, etc, I look at the OT as that space of time for people. I should have responded to Wilders comment about it not gaining traction. The level of music expertise, even just the opinions, are fascinating. Just a conversation a person such as myself is better off listening to, rather than participating. Such as my comment above, ill formed and easily misinterpreted as a complaint. I’ll show myself the door.

No need to show yourself the door

I get the same way as you do with music when people start talking about video games.

Ouch, the gamers.

I’ve owned 3, GoldenEye, MarioKart, then AllStarBaseball ‘05. Oops, Allied General, PS, but played ok on PS2 as long as you don’t mind not being able to save a game. But these guys start talking games it’s connections and ports, and a hibbleygidget connection for the wimwang, and whoooooosh! The music stuff is much more informative for me, but I’m still gleaning a few details from the tech talk.

I'll check that out.

Garrison duty in the army amounted to an endless MarioKart tournament in the mid-late 90’s. Pretty amusing, all you heard in the halls of the barracks was endless sounds of M-K. Right now I’m addicted to desk top defense. I cant remember who posted the link to it, but the bastard has stolen my life.

I like a fair number of more mainstream bands

but as a rule they’re generally less interesting to talk about. Never was a huge Metallica fan though.

New mainstream bands, sure.

But take a band like the Strawbs. They were mainstream enough to appear on Top of the Pops in 1971, and yet they’re a pretty interesting band to talk about.

Their TotP performance can be seen here.

That’s Rick Wakeman on keyboards.

This is seriously the sort of music I like.

At any given time, there are a few fairly popular bands that are interesting to me.

Popular music is pretty bad right now, but there are some really good bands that have managed some mainstream success. And then there are other periods, like the mid-50’s, early/mid-60’s, early 90’s, etc. that are chock full of wildly successful bands that are quite good as well. Popular music is cyclical; soon enough, a few new/innovative/interesting bands will come along, get hugely popular, and force the major label heads to take some risks. And then they’ll manufacture pale imitators, and the era of total garbage will begin again.

OT maybe from your conversation.

But have you heard of Rodriguez? Heard a couple tracks on KEXP last week, great album. Didn’t make a splash in ’69, re-release.

I've never given a shit about any of that.

I listen to bands for their music, not their principals.

Metallica WAS WAS an amazing band... about a million years ago

those first 4 or 5 albums were really good. I listened to them a lot when I was 14-18? I saw the Guns & Roses, Metallica, and Motor Head show at the Kingdom when I was in 8th grade. It was great.

I can’t remember the last time I really listened to a Metallica album.

Actually I was at Bumbershoot this last week and realized I am old. I liked the post-punk pop (Nada Surf) and indie country/folk (Neko Case) so much more than anything else.

I listened to Ride the Lightning just a couple of weeks ago.

But I have no need of their newer stuff. It all went downhill after Master of Puppets, and the black album really was the end. Ever since then I’d actually rather listen to Megadeth (whom I’ve seen live – they opened for Black Sabbath).
