Some struggling pitchers with good stuff turn into Matt Thornton, powerful high-leverage relievers who figure enough things out to make their repertoires work in an important role. Other struggling pitchers with good stuff turn into Dustin Nippert.

To be fair
when Matt Thornton was Dustin Nippert’s age, he was walking almost 7 per 9IP in AAA, and also giving up more hits than innings pitched.
This year in AAA, Nippert walked 2.27/9 and generally pitched sort of OK. Thornton always missed more bats and gave up fewer HRs, but we all thought Thornton was utterly useless at age 27, so it’s not like the book is closed on Nippert.
That doesn't make Nippert any more threatening today.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
No, you're right.
I’m thrilled they’re facing him today.
Just someone with that kind of power arm…I know it’s very ‘scouty’, but I keep thinking he’s got a chance to harness that and turn himself into a half decent reliever at the least (sort of like Thornton, who I’m still shocked is characterized as ’effective’).
I am troubled by how quickly Thornton was able to figure things out as soon as he left
by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 3, 2008 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions
It floored me
on the plus side, it prepared me a bit better for the shock of Jorge Campillo becoming a well-above average starting pitcher in the majors.
WHY DO ALL OUR PLAYER PLAY BETTER AFTER THEY LEAVE SEATTLE

Thornton's strike% jumped from 59 to 67 overnight
I don’t even get how that happens. If one simple little adjustment was all it took to make a bad pitcher good, where the hell was our pitching coach?
by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 3, 2008 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions
I think the pitching coach is by far the most important coach
but only if you have one who knows what he’s doing. Stottlemyre, for example, hasn’t done a thing to impress me.

I've never understood his glowing reputation
must be because he was a Yankee
by JI on Sep 3, 2008 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
A Yankee with a famous name
He strikes me as one of those pitching coaches who makes stupid meaningless adjustments all the time instead of smart important ones that work.
by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 3, 2008 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions
Part of me wants to blame at least a portion of Felix's regression on Stottlemyre.
His pre-season “establish the fastball” mantra rubbed me the wrong way.
2008 CB% = .088
2006 CB% = .206
IIRC, he tweaked his delivery a bit following last year’s arm injury, and since then he hasn’t throw his curve as much. I think this is as big a problem as any other – that curve is devastating when he locates it
by seattlebruin on Sep 3, 2008 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions
He hasn't thrown it as much because I believe it has changed
we only have one game of PITCHf/x data to work with, but Felix’s pre-injury curve was sharper and had quite a bit more break than the one he’s throwing now. That one was a true power curve capable of missing some bats. This one is loopier and intended to get more looking strikes than swinging ones.
by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 3, 2008 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions
Yes, the break hasn't been nearly as sharp as it was during that Red Sox game
it’s rather unfortunate that we don’t have a larger sample size, because I get this feeling that a true power curve might be just what Felix needs
That and less fastballs…
by seattlebruin on Sep 3, 2008 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions
I was referring to the Oakland game, for what it's worth
Fenway didn’t have a PITCHf/x system installed. But I believe that whatever tweak Felix made after the injury has cost him what was once a knockout pitch.

Ah, I see
that makes sense though, I forgot about that Opening Day start – I only caught the Sox game since it was on national TV, unfortunately.

That’s the intriguing and annoying thing about guys like this. But holy wow has Nippert been bad so far.
by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 3, 2008 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah
As I said above, part of my inability to slot him into the ‘worthless, non-MLB arm’ category is because Matt Fucking Thornton is now described as an important piece of a playoff team. THAT Matt Thornton. It boggles the mind.
Part of it is also watching Nippert do this against Tacoma this year. It was one day, but on that day a 6’8" guy had pinpoint command of a 96 MPH fastball that he used to get 5Ks in 5 IP and also 7 GBs to only 3 FBs. It was dominating. Yes, he’s never shown that stuff again, not even in the minors, but it was there then, and if he ever learns how to do that consistently, he’ll be fine.
Holy wow Dustin Nippert was good today.
10 GB outs, 4 Ks to no walks, solid velocity…
Why do the M’s always do this to struggling pitchers?
I thought of that immediately after I hit 'post.'
Thanks for having my back, as the kids say.
Damn you Dustin.

Compared to night games. Does anybody have a split?
Ok, this year better at day time
Higher K rate lower BB rate. lower ERA slightly higer HR rate though

So, identical.

In football, I think that argument can be made.
Baseball, however, is a much more individual sport.
Absolutely
although that’s a different kind of chemistry.
by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 3, 2008 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions
Perhaps he means
the kind of chemistry that Shawne Merriman enjoys.
If it wasn't for college football I'd probably have given up on sports.
Football is based so much on working together and timing. If someone is a split second off, the whole play breaks down.
Baseball is a bunch of individual encounters pieced together. I’m not saying for certain chemistry does or doesn’t matter in either sport, but I’d say there’s a much more compelling argument for it mattering in football.
Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.
That's true, and yet that's not what people are generally talking about when they talk about chemistry
You can have perfect timing and still think your WR is a dickhead who you never want to spend time with.
It’s the philosophy that everyone on a successful team has to be friends and hang out together that pretty clearly doesn’t hold in baseball, and I’m fairly certain doesn’t hold in football either. Who knows, but my sense is that the NFL team with the best chemistry last year was the Detroit Lions. The Giants clearly had terrible chemistry for years, with feuding between the coach, Tiki Barber, Eli Manning, etc. Didn’t matter.
People are talking about Pedroria getting the MVP? Really?

Washburn vows to return this season
Lefty has abdominal injury, doesn’t know when it occurred
ARLINGTON — An abdominal injury will prevent left-hander Jarrod Washburn from making his scheduled start against the Yankees on Friday night at Safeco Field, but he vows to pitch again before the regular season ends.
“If nothing else, I will get a [cortisone] shot to make it through the end of the season,” he said Wednesday. “Baseball has gotten to the point where it isn’t much fun right now anyway. The one day it is fun is the one day I get to play, and not to be able to do that would make for a long, long month.”
Washburn (5-14, 4.72 ERA) is winding up his third season with the Mariners and said he has no idea when or how he suffered the abdominal injury.
He seemed perfectly healthy in his start against the Indians on Sunday afternoon, holding the Tribe scoreless over 6 2/3 innings.
“I am assuming I did it at some point of the game,” he said. "I didn’t feel anything that I am aware of, but when I woke up the next morning, it didn’t feel right. It was real sore, like a muscle feels after a bad cramp.
“I was hoping that’s what it was so I didn’t say anything to the trainers. But the first day here, which was two days after I pitched, it was worse. I knew there was an issue there, so I went in and told [head athletic trainer Rick Griffin].”
After a few pokes in the area, Griffin found the problem and Washburn’s usual between-start routine was put on hold.
“He doesn’t think it was too deep, so hopefully it will heal pretty quickly,” Washburn said. “But he said it’s one of the few injuries you get that there is just absolutely nothing you can do to treat it. You just have to wait and let it heal itself.”
No one is sure how long that will take, but Washburn won’t be rushed back to action by the club.
“We will err on the side of caution,” manager Jim Riggleman said, “but it’s going to be Wash’s call, really. When he says he’s 100 percent ready to go, then he would pitch. It’s going to be up to him.”
