OFFTOP 09.29.08...Byebye O'Eight Mariners

Did we ever think it would come to this?  Rooting for a team to fail; being upset when they sweep?  How surreal.  And now it's time to attach ourselves to new teams for a month--and, ojala que, watch some decent baseball.

But let's not get into who we'll miss, who should stay, who should go and who we should pick up.  We'll have plenty of time and plenty of threads for that sort of banter.  Here, we're all about the random.

With that in mind:

♥It's already 76 degrees here, and it's set to be 88.  I want fall, damn it.  What's the best part of fall?

♥I walked six miles yesterday as part of training for a marathon (walking it; I'm not completely insane).  Question: how many drinks did it take for me to announce my intention to participate?  How many drinks would it take you?

♥Anyone in a relationship in which your sports teams are bitter rivals?  How do you handle this?

♥Losing scrabulous has left a hole in my heart.  How might I fill this? (please, thinking games, preferably ones which can be played turn-by-turn, and I can pause when need be)

♥We've covered countries.  Now, imagine you have eight weeks to see cities, specifically.  Travel time is not included, and money is no object.  How many would you visit, and which ones would they be?

♥Yeah...I've got nothing else

I've learned that it takes a good long while to explore a city.

I went to San Francisco last summer, and my wife and I were there for 4 days and we only did about 1/3rd of the things we wanted to do.

Probably 5-6 days each, eight weeks = 56 days, so I’ll go with 11 cities

Tokyo
Beijing
Hong Kong
New York
Temecula
Bakersfield
Boston
Rome
Dayton

Answers.

 - Supposed to be 91 FREAKING DEGREES here today. The best part of fall is that IT NEVER GETS TO 91 FREAKING DEGREES HERE IN THE FALL.
 - Well, judging on a sample size of my wife, who agreed to participate in the Portland To Coast walk after a night at the bar with her friends, I’m guessing it takes at least one and perhaps two bottles of wine.
 - Nope.
 - Can’t help ya there. Not much of a gamer.
 - Eight weeks would give me plenty of time to see Beijing and Tokyo. I wouldn’t want to do more than a couple cities in that time because it takes a lot of time to properly explore a city and I don’t want my experience of a city to be one full day and a half travel day.

I know it

but eight weeks is still not a lot of time, and I’m not the kind of traveler that can spend two days in a city and call it “seen”. I need to take some time and properly suss everything out.

Caribou actually.

It was a really foggy day one early spring while my Rig was at the Milne Point field off the coast of Beaufort Sea. I was Roustabouting at the time and had to go outside to check on some things. I look over and out of the fog trots a caribou. Then another. Then another.

The fog began to lift and I saw that the entire herd had begun to migrate right by our rig. Literally 10,000 caribou stretched to the horizon in all directions. Some came close enough to me I could reach out and touch them. It was so amazing. Like something out of a dream. One of the most spectacular and spiritual experiences of my life.

This is what people never understand about smart cars

People that own Smart Cars or the like should also own a “regular” car for long-distance driving; Smart cars were and are meant for, as you say, in-city driving. Driving to work, driving to Target, whatever. If you want a road trip car use a regular car, but for every day driving get one of these.

It sounds logical

But most drivers don’t know how to handle a SUV and the danger of flipping/rolling/etc. because of their inexperience typically cancels out the “cushion” advantage.

by Frosty Raptor on Sep 29, 2008 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

by I'm NOT Corco on Sep 29, 2008 8:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

People in SUV's tend to think they're bulletproof

thus don’t feel the need to know how to maneuver. Look at how many SUV’s end up in ditches/over curbs in snowstorms. “I’VE GOT 8000 LB OF STEEL UNDER ME I’M SAFE I CAN STILL DRIVE 60 MPH!!!!”

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Sep 29, 2008 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

These people are idiots

and yes I know what you mean. I guess I was taught to drive driving SUVs in the worst weather conditions possible (I took my driving test for my license in a snowstorm driving a 15 year old Jeep Wrangler on unplowed roads) so it’s more natural for me

It’s the damn tourists you always see in the ditches

As long as you realize steel does not equal traction but does equal maybe not dying in a head on you should be fine

Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Corcotopia and Washingtonhighways.org

by I'm NOT Corco on Sep 29, 2008 8:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

and I don't know if these people think 8000 LB OF STEEL

so much as they think ZOMG I HAVE 4WD!!!

When really 4WD doesn’t make much difference once you’re moving- good tires are really the key

Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Corcotopia and Washingtonhighways.org

by I'm NOT Corco on Sep 29, 2008 8:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's as easy as it sounds

An SUV behaves a lot differently at 45 to 60 mph than when trying to find a parking spot at the mall. I don’t trust my driving ability to safely avoid a road hazard in a SUV.

by Frosty Raptor on Sep 29, 2008 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno

95% of the miles I have logged in an automobile have been behind the wheel of a truck of some sort- I’ve had my share of emergency manuvers and I’ve never really had any problems. I think it’s slightly overblown. You just can’t abruptly turn the wheel

Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Corcotopia and Washingtonhighways.org

by I'm NOT Corco on Sep 29, 2008 8:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right

But you clearly have extensive experience behind the wheel of a heavy body vehicle with a higher center of gravity than most cars. And I think that’s where people get into trouble.

by Frosty Raptor on Sep 29, 2008 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno

I don’t feel like I’m driving any differently then anyone else when I’m on the road when I’m in a Jeep. I drive a 15-passenger van for a living too and that really is different- you have to noticeably change the way you drive to handle the vehicle because that has a REALLY high center of gravity. But I don’t feel like I drive the Jeep any differently then most people drive their cars.
I can’t help but think thats another thing blown up more then it should be by the media

Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Corcotopia and Washingtonhighways.org

by I'm NOT Corco on Sep 29, 2008 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm...

For the sake of clarity, I’m not saying you don’t know how to handle a SUV, but I don’t think most people who spend time behind the wheel of one in a non-work fashion do. When it snows around here the vehicles I see spinning out the most are SUVs.

by Frosty Raptor on Sep 29, 2008 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm just saying that I think in most driving conditions people know how to handle SUVs

the difference in manuvering isn’t as different as it’s made out to be, especially with newer SUVs. The biggest problem is that people assume that because they are in an SUV they are invincible and thusly end up in the ditch

Cutler’s a stud and his offensive line gives him about three minutes per play to find a receiver, so they should be able to keep putting points on the board, but that defense isn’t going to be much of a help.

It’s a one-time fee – I think you can “trial” it for about $3 for a month, but I think the download is $7 or something. Considering that I play it for about 30-45 min a day, I’ve definitely gotten my $7 worth.

The two goals that Hull City scored were definitely quality goals, so that’s good I guess, but WHY THE FUCK IS WILLIAM GALLAS EVEN ON THE PITCH MUCH LESS THE CAPTAIN HE COULDN’T DEFEND HIMSELF AGAINST A MOSQUITO MUCH LESS….agh.

So, well done to Hull City, but good lord Arsenal need a better defence.

For all of Wenger’s strengths as a manager – and there are many – he’s also got a stubborn streak a mile wide and won’t change just because of a few bad results. Which I’m not sure is a bad thing.

Christy mcchristballs we outshot them like 75 to 5

by Nick S on Sep 29, 2008 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it was pretty brutal.

As much as I love watching Arsenal play, it’s really getting frustrating watching them try to score the perfect goal every time. Arsenal outshoot EVERYBODY 75 to 5, and yet they don’t score 9 times a game like that sort of shot rate would suggest.

Coming into this weekend, Stoke had taken something like 9 shots all season, and scored on 7 of them. They’ll struggle to stay up with that low of a shots-on-goal rate, but how much would it make me happy to see Arsenal convert at a rate like that?

Senior baseball writer Joe Strauss has learned that the expected value of the contract is akin to the deal signed by Carlos Silva last offseason. Silva received a four-year, $48-million deal from Seattle. Sources have confirmed that the average annual value is worth better than $10 million.

Germany exacerbates cruise ship supremacy conflict with Norway

Here’s Gizmodo’s article on the recent launching of the (currently) world’s largest cruise ship.

I still don’t get the allure of cruise ships. How are you escaping if you spend a nauseating amount of timepacked on a boat with thousands of other people?

by Frosty Raptor on Sep 29, 2008 10:47 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you

Also not a fan of cruise ships. I went on an Alaskan cruise with my family a number of years ago, and all I wanted to do was get off the boat and camp/hike/kayak/explore and I was stuck on a big boat for almost the entire trip. I guess some people like the restaurants and other perks, but I dont know if I would ever go on another cruise before I turn 75.

by FlaskInSafeco on Sep 29, 2008 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Gomez on Sep 29, 2008 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cruise ships are for old people.

They get to travel around and visit different places without much effort. They also spend a lot of money.

And yes, cruise ships suck being single. However, when your grandparents pay to go on them every couple years, you can’t pass it up.

by Wilder. on Sep 29, 2008 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

My grandparents were going to invite the family on a cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary, and I’m so glad that fell through. We are going to Palm Springs instead. While that might not be the most exciting destination, at least I wont be trapped on a boat full of rich old people the entire time.

The only way a cruise would be worth it

is if the booze were included in the price, like the food is. My wife and I are debating one of those “all-inclusive” Mexican vacations, probably Puerto Vallarta – the whole concept, to me, seems like a cruise ship that goes nowhere, you stay on the resort and eat resort food and never have to deal with the locals. Which is pretty much everything I oppose in a vacation. But she found a resort that includes booze in the cost, and now I’m thinking “hmmmmm that might not be too bad”.

by Wilder. on Sep 29, 2008 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the thing

If I’m gonna pay $1200 for a boat trip, you’d better throw in everything. When I’m paying that much and still have to pay inflated prices for food and drinks… fuck. Old people just don’t know what they’re doing with their money.

by Gomez on Sep 29, 2008 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Food's always included

and from what I hear, it’s quite good food on most ships. The problem is on my vacations my booze budget is more than my food budget, so free food doesn’t entice me; throw in free booze for a week and I’m more inclined to buy what you’re sellin’.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

There is usually a set food plan.

But if you want to eat at their nicer restaurants, you have to pay.

And the food plans differ between cruise lines. Some are free-for-all and some are restaurant style. And if they are saying booze is free, I would be wary of the quality of booze they are serving for free. I doubt you get the hard stuff or the premium brews included in the free package.

by Wilder. on Sep 29, 2008 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I did something similar in the Domincan one spring break.

For a 20-year-old to spend a week on white sands with everything (incl. booze) paid for in the midst of a bunch of other (mostly european) vacationers for an absurdly low price, it was a great vacation.

by Matthew on Sep 29, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's true

But I don’t think the advantages (multiple locations, having activities and events planned for you, etc.) merit the sacrifice of total autonomy.

Plus, you’re constantly competing with others from your cruise ship and competing cruise ships (during peak season) for the same attractions when you dock. Maybe I need to be more open minded, but that’s not my idea of a good time.

by Frosty Raptor on Sep 29, 2008 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A cruise would be a dream vacation for me.

I don’t have to drive anywhere.
I don’t have to cook.
I don’t have to figure out where the hell we’re staying, and where the hell it IS.

It takes a lot of pressure on me to make decisions for all of us.

It was dreary. The food was actually really good, but it was boring. I mean, unless you really dig dancing in your swimwear by the pool doing the YMCA dance with 300 people. How do you feel about the bill not passing?

Personally, I am glad it didn’t pass. Sure, it would help out people’s retirements today, but for a 25-year old guy like me, it would be selling out my future which has already been sold out.

This economy has been in need of a dramatic recession. Yes, it sucks, but it has to be done. The government can’t bailout fiscally irresponsible behavior. Every time they do, the entire world suffers for it. We need to get the dollar back strong again and voting down this bill was a way to prevent it from being further destroyed.

What do you do in the finance industry?

by Wilder. on Sep 29, 2008 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Without getting into politics (treading a fine line, but we can avoid it)

Something needs to happen…not happy with govt. involvement but its too big of a mess to not step in. I don’t think we need to take on ALL $700 billion in bad debt, no strings attached. So they’ve been working on that. I’m kinda happy it failed the first time..then they’ll have to work at getting a better bill on the floor.

I work in financial planning…investments/insurance. Right now it’s just been dealing with clients who are freaked out (Do I have $ in Lehman or the market is down 6% today, what about me?) And really, the Dow is one of the stupidest measures of the economy.

I love how AIG fails so they take them out of the DOW and put something else in…like it reflects the economy somehow. It’s a dumb measure but people freak out about it.

It's the ERA of economic indicators

it’s a number that people can understand. It may not have any relevance to what’s really happening, or it may have exaggerated relevance, but people want something they can glance at and decide whether to panic or not.

Agreed about the Dow being a "good" economic measure.

I just started working for World Financial Group and we help people with their investments, mortgages, and insurance as well. This is a great time to be in the business.

Yes it is...I'm excited for the potential. We'll probably be doing a lot of investment take overs

As well as insurance…not so much ‘start-up’ accounts that don’t really earn you anything. So it’s a good time. Everyone is fleeing to find new advisors and new ideas.

Definitely an exciting time. But hectic.

You mean it wasn't a good idea to pony up $700 billion after a 2 1/2 page statement was issued by Paulson?

That was the most insane thing I’ve ever heard…2 1/2 pages asking for unlimited control of $700 billion. In any case..I want this to kinda continue on and find a better deal (which typically happens with time and cooler heads)

So this is nice:

We run a customized (ancient) accounting program, and the guy who wrote it (and therefore is the only guy who can fix it, so he’s on retainer with us), is a professor at the local community college.

So the thing takes a shit on me this morning, and I email him to have him come fix it, and he tells me he can’t be here until after 8:30 tonight. How helpful.

We're shopping for new software as we speak.

I think we found our solution last week, but we have to find out of they can build a specific report for us without to much additional cost. But that doesn’t do me an ounce of good at the moment.

Normally I could care less and I’d just screw off all day, but I need to transmit some electronic transactions before the end of the business day, or else they’ll carry over into next month and totally screw my bank reconciliations.

by Thingray on Sep 29, 2008 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So this officially sucks.

No IT fix until late tonight. I either have to drive all the way back to my office at 9:30 at night, stay here until then, or just go home and pray he fixed it correctly before I come in tomorrow morning.

Why in God’s name a company would rely on a single IT guy to custom program something, knowing that he is employed full time+ somewhere else is beyond me.

Not to mention the fact that I’m now going to be a full day behind, and my bank reconciliations will be all fucked up.

It is, but that means I'll have to work three times harder to catch up tomorrow.

When you lose 16 man hours, it always seems to take at least 24 man hours to catch up, Don’t ask me why…

People flip when money is involved.

The only reason to panic is because people are panicking. It’s dumb.

I wish I had some extra money..I'd throw a little bit in right now.

And the panic is understandable when you have a couple who barely have enough to retire on watch their portfolio drop 8 percent in a few days.

The second it does that..it's gonna drop probably 200 more points within a few minutes.

That’s a big mark (kind of like 100 losses)…it’s meaningless really, but people put stock into it (no pun intended! actually, it was)

I'm disappointed

the drop in the Dow doesn’t even rank in the top 10 drops, percentage-wise. It is the biggest single-day Dow points drop in history, though, so that’s something.

Depends on how much you like terrible acting and boatwrecks

if you answered “yes” to both of the above, as well as to “I enjoy completely implausible movies set in the real world,” then yes, you should love this movie

You'd think it would be nice and quiet.

My last two supervisors insisted on giving me a running commentary of what they were looking at in the video feed. Plus, I tend to think about the oil/natural gas, the whole system, it’s affect on society. My mind gets totally out of control sometimes, especially on decompression. Ground control to dpseadvr.

It did that last week too on Monday morning

The ABC News radio talking heads got really uneasy after the market opened, and KOMO actually cut away because they were getting scared.

This ‘being rich and losing my nest egg on bad investments’ thing… I find it hard to relate for some reason.

They are so monochromatic with their music. But they’re good in small doses.

trying to debate if it’s worth just getting a legit copy of Office though because it’s only twenty bucks

by seattlebruin on Sep 29, 2008 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, the one thing I don't like about OpenOffice though is that it doesn't save the Microsoft formats that well

at least in my experience. Excel is the most troubling because of how different the formula systems are, but there’s just weird formatting errors whenever I go from OpenOffice —> MS Office
