They say this is the time of year that tends to separate the wheat from the chaff, the time when the big boys step up and the wee ones go home. Here's to being the chaffiest bunch of chaffs that ever chaffed.

I was thinking about that.

I wondered whether it was a change or a pitch that didn’t break.

Semi-related to this,

There’s an awesome article by John Walsh in the 2008 THT annual about which pitches are most effective against righties and lefties. A lot of stories like that tend to go over my head, but this one was pretty clear.

(The THT annual is awesome and always needs a good pimping.)

Question!

Is there any way to find what a player’s line would be if they played in another ballpark for their home games?

55!

by joof on Sep 26, 2008 8:38 PM PDT reply actions

The park factors we have on Statcorner will be helpful.

They’ll allow you to adjust K, BB, HBP, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR.

Say you have a park which is 110 K, 90 BB, 90 HBP, 90 for all batting stats…

You’d divide the pitcher’s Ks by 1.05 (i.e. [kfactor+avg]/2, divide walks by 0.95, etc to get a park neutral line. Then you’d do the same process in reverse to put him in another park.

by Graham MacAree on Sep 26, 2008 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm, alright

Would it be more accurate to use home/away splits when I did this then just halfing the park factors, or would small sample size make this meaningless?

55!

by joof on Sep 26, 2008 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Halving the park factors is the way to do it due to sample variances

This still isn’t a really concrete way of doing things, but it’s better than home/away splits

by Graham MacAree on Sep 26, 2008 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

OK fine, Yuni is bad.

I’ve been trying not to believe.

by Teej on Sep 26, 2008 8:44 PM PDT reply actions

I thought Morrow had just recently been stretched out to start.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

And he’s going past 110 pitches for consecutive starts? Damn. Dusty Baker school of pitcher development?

Now with 100% more Canuck.

There's still hope. We still have Putz.

And Tits and everyone else in the bullpen.

Can't wait until Part IV of the Baker series
Chatted with team president Chuck Armstrong and CEO Howard Lincoln prior to the game. Don’t miss Part IV of our Rebuilding the Mariners series tomorrow, in which I’ll take a closer look at the ownership situation many of you have asked me about. I’ll give you a hint: those Chris Larson rumors you’ve been reading all summer? Don’t go betting the farm on them.

I invested in a hat over the winter.

If I wasn’t driving the bandwagon, I was at least in the front row.

by Teej on Sep 26, 2008 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm only in about my second or third year of actively trying to learn more about baseball.

You guys, USSM, THT and BP (sometimes) have been godsends. Now I have good backup. Trying to tell people late last season that the Rays were poised to make a run was incredibly difficult. Especially when the two guys I talk to most about baseball are a Yanks fan and a Sox fan (my boss). They just laughed at me over the winter and in spring training.

Now I’m laughing Brian Urlacher-style.

by Teej on Sep 26, 2008 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

They're not my bosses anymore now, actually.

I got semi-promoted and now I work on the Web side of things. I just spent a day training with one of our Web software guys (our only guy, honestly), and he spent a good chunk of the shift railing against the save statistic and agreeing with me that this might be K-Rod’s worst year in the majors. So it’s getting better.

GM search...

Heard Kim Ng is a candidate.

Hopefully she gets a fair look.

But I wouldn’t bet one dollar on it.

ESPN has a fairly interesting interview with Chuck Armstrong up right now.
“It’s time for some fresh thinking,” Armstrong said at the end of his 23rd season with the team — what he called his worst and most “miserable” one.

“We’re color blind, gender blind,” he went on to say. “We just want the best person that we think would be the best person for the Mariners as we move forward,” Armstrong said.

by BrianL on Sep 26, 2008 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Sweet.

Link to AP story.

I’ll take it with a truckload of salt, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

by Teej on Sep 26, 2008 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Good news, everyone.

ESPN has an interesting tidbit on our new GM candidates.

[Chuck Armstrong] and team CEO Howard Lincoln said the replacement for Bill Bavasi, fired June 16, and temporary in-house fill-in Lee Pelekoudas will be an outsider with new ideas to resurrect the franchise.

by BrianL on Sep 26, 2008 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

Sports Illustrated says Kim Ng is being considered.
SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said his team is vetting a wide range of general manager candidates, pointedly leaving open the possibility of Seattle hiring the first female general manager in major league history.
