9/26: Open Game Thread
Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners, Sep 26, 2008 7:10 PM PDT
They say this is the time of year that tends to separate the wheat from the chaff, the time when the big boys step up and the wee ones go home. Here's to being the chaffiest bunch of chaffs that ever chaffed.

Does anyone have a bad feeling Billy Beane will make the A's lose on purpose so we can't get the #1 draft pick?

I don't think that'll be a problem for me tonight.
After my first week of working mornings, I’m completely exhausted. I’ll probably pass out as soon as Morrow is removed.
But what about Nick Swisher?
(Sorry, Nick. You’re one of my favorite players. But you look like a douche.)

Semi-related to this,
There’s an awesome article by John Walsh in the 2008 THT annual about which pitches are most effective against righties and lefties. A lot of stories like that tend to go over my head, but this one was pretty clear.
(The THT annual is awesome and always needs a good pimping.)

Question!
Is there any way to find what a player’s line would be if they played in another ballpark for their home games?
55!
Are you asking whether it is possible to calculate or whether there is a tool which will do this for you?
by Graham MacAree on Sep 26, 2008 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions
The park factors we have on Statcorner will be helpful.
They’ll allow you to adjust K, BB, HBP, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR.
Say you have a park which is 110 K, 90 BB, 90 HBP, 90 for all batting stats…
You’d divide the pitcher’s Ks by 1.05 (i.e. [kfactor+avg]/2, divide walks by 0.95, etc to get a park neutral line. Then you’d do the same process in reverse to put him in another park.
by Graham MacAree on Sep 26, 2008 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions
Hmm, alright
Would it be more accurate to use home/away splits when I did this then just halfing the park factors, or would small sample size make this meaningless?
55!
Halving the park factors is the way to do it due to sample variances
This still isn’t a really concrete way of doing things, but it’s better than home/away splits

I thought Morrow had just recently been stretched out to start.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
And he’s going past 110 pitches for consecutive starts? Damn. Dusty Baker school of pitcher development?
Now with 100% more Canuck.
I'm sure his face will return to normal when the Sox win it all again and shit on everything that is good in the world.
I have a dreadful feeling about this year's playoffs.
There are several teams I don’t like, and several more that I just don’t care about. The Rays are the only team I feel good rooting for. (Unless the Brewers make it. I can root for a Selig-free Pilots team.)
I guess I could pull for the Twins.
So Jose Lopez and Dustin Pedroia have the same number of homeruns, though Jose Lopez plays in a huge pitcher park, while Dustin Pedroia plays on a glorified softball field.

If I wasn’t driving the bandwagon, I was at least in the front row.
I'm only in about my second or third year of actively trying to learn more about baseball.
You guys, USSM, THT and BP (sometimes) have been godsends. Now I have good backup. Trying to tell people late last season that the Rays were poised to make a run was incredibly difficult. Especially when the two guys I talk to most about baseball are a Yanks fan and a Sox fan (my boss). They just laughed at me over the winter and in spring training.
Now I’m laughing Brian Urlacher-style.

ESPN has a fairly interesting interview with Chuck Armstrong up right now.
“It’s time for some fresh thinking,” Armstrong said at the end of his 23rd season with the team — what he called his worst and most “miserable” one.
