If the team can find a way to lose all of their games until then, then I might just be able to witness history. Go 100/100!

Hah! Quick story:

When I lived in Japan, I had a friend whose family lived in Korea for a few years. He wanted a dog and his parents decided to get him one. So his mom went to a “pet store” and picked out a dog. The owner told her to come back in 2 days to pick up the dog, and when she did, the owner gave her a paper bag full of meat.

Talk about lost in translation. They never did attempt to adopt/buy a dog again while in Korea.

From the MLB.com preview

"The middle game of the three-game series against the Athletes features the next-to-last start of the season for right-hander Carlos Silva, who won his first three starts of his first year with Seattle, and has just one win since. "

Someone needs to dig up some Baker quotes about Bedard

from the first half of the season.

But to "feel something’’ in April that gets progressively worse? That’s pitching hurt. That’s crossing the line. Pitchers are lectured about this by the team’s training staff at the start of every season. Not all of the pitchers listen. Bedard did not listen.

Geoff Baker is a douche.

by katal on Sep 20, 2008 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

What the fuck

He was sucking Silva/Batista’s balls for pitching hurt and sucking, but Bedard pitches hurt and does reasonably well and he gets called out?

Wtf, Geoff.

by OlSalty on Sep 20, 2008 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Baker quotes?

Probably will take some doing but you’re sure to find some gems along the season:

Such as this one on June 28:

Yes, this season is lost. And yes, the Mariners spent $48 million over four years to bring in Carlos Silva. But the guy does give you seven innings when he’s clicking. And tonight he was. Silva notches his first victory since April 17 in Oakland, a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

……

Silva talked about what he did differently tonight. The biggest change was in his command. Remember this morning, when I mentioned the command issue in regards to Jarrod Washburn? When I said that command has less to do with walk ratios and throwing strikes and more about location? Well, listen to Silva.

"You’ve got to throw strikes, but you’ve got to make your pitches,‘’ he said. "Always, I throw strikes, but I don’t make my pitches that way (like he did tonight). It’s two different things.

"It’s hard. It’s not easy. It’s hard because on this level, when the other team knows you’re going to be around the plate, if you don’t make your piutches and you don’t hit your spots, you’re going to get hit hard. And that’s what’s been happening to me. So, I have to hit my corners. When I don’t hit them, I’m going to be in trouble because they know I’m going to throw strikes.’’

And that, folks, is why walk rates and strike ratios are not always the best way to measure the command of certain types of pitchers. Not pitch-to-contact guys whose goal is to get the ball put into play, only not as hard as the hitters would like.

by ThundaPC on Sep 20, 2008 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

I think that's going to be a bit tricker.

I don’t recall Baker ever parading anyone for pitching through pain.

by ThundaPC on Sep 20, 2008 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Ironic post from last year:
No, I don’t think this was a Jeff Weaver type of “injury” where routine, daily shoulder pain is exaggerated to spare a roster spot. Yes, I do think MLB should take a tougher stance on these things. But as I mentioned, pitchers feel pain of some sort all the time. Who are we to say what is serious and what isn’t? Just a question to ponder.

I fucking hate you Mariners

by kentroyals5 on Sep 20, 2008 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's the June 08 Archive

The Entire Month

Can’t find any real juicy bits other than Batista ranting that he’s pitching hurt which was actually quoted by Larry Stone….and then later, Batista denies saying it, apparently.

It think it was more of Baker grilling Bedard for pitching through injury while glossing over other people doing the same thing.

by ThundaPC on Sep 20, 2008 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Backhanded compliments

Baker, from June 29th:

Erik Bedard wasn’t ace-like. But he gave his team a chance to win, 94 pitches or not.

by katal on Sep 20, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

From the fourth of July
"Erik did a great job,‘’ Riggleman said. "That’s a heckuva ballclub over there and they make you throw a lot of pitches. He was throwing so many pitches that were very close and — rightfully so — they were balls. But most teams would have taken a cut at some of those pitches, which would have kept his pitch count down. They just forced him into a very laboring five innings and they did a good job.’’

I agree with him on most of that. The issue isn’t the work he did on the scoreboard. He allowed just the one run. It’s the longevity. This team didn’t trade away five guys for a pitcher who needs his bullpen to hold off the Tigers for four innings.

Thing is, this is now what the team has. A five or six inning pitcher who can hold teams to a run or two. In case you hadn’t noticed, that’s what Jarrod Washburn has done lately.

So the one game the Red Sox didn't draw 30k+ and the Rays lost, they drew 29,772.

It’s just sad the Rays don’t draw 30k+ regularly. And I find it crazy that the stadium used to have a 45k+ capacity and now it is down to just over 36k. In the land of maximizing revenue, you don’t see stadium capacity decrease often. And people think Seattle has bad fans…
