8/6: Open Game Thread
Minnesota Twins at Seattle Mariners, Aug 6, 2008 1:40 PM PDT
This being a weekday matinee means that I won't be able to watch, which makes me 2-2 in missing Washburn starts since the deadline. And that's good, because while he may still be a Seattle Mariner, if I don't see him, he doesn't exist.

Same as it's always been
For some god damned stupid reason this team stubbornly refuses to move Raul to DH even if it means holding back prospect development for a guy who will not be here next year (most likely) and can’t play defense.
If he's right, Jeremy Reed could have his career ended in a tragic hair-grease fire for all I care.

Yes, we really do have fans.
What's his deal?
In his last eight starts, he’s gone: 5, 5, 5, 6, 7, 5, 4.2, and 4.1 innings. I know that’s always kind of been his M.O., but it seemed earlier this year as if he he had gotten over that hump. You notice anything?
He's throwing less sliders this year and even more of his fastball.
For whatever reason he’s suddenly became a flyball pitcher too.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 6, 2008 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions
He's throwing his fastball around 75% of the time.
That development saddens me.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 6, 2008 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions
I think the injury has thrown him way off
He just hasn’t been able to get the right grip for his slider consistently. He had one game where he threw it extremely well (against Oakland), but that’s pretty much it. He’s not throwing it because he’s not confident in his ability to get it down ATM.

The one glaring matchup in the M’s favor is Sonny versus Felix. You guys should win that one, but ya never know. The Rays nearly lost a Kazmir/Sowers matchup today.

The tale of the FiddleCat is a long and ultimately rewarding story....
He was born into poverty in post-World War I Fiddletown. Wrecked by mortar shells in the first battle of the Marne, Fiddletown was bereft of economy and most importantly, happyness. FiddleCat was a bright child, always looking at instruments through the local town’s music stores. It wasn’t until his parents sent him to boarding school in Vienna that he first heard American folk music. From then on, FiddleCat knew his destiny. He saved all spring working odd-jobs with SeizureMouse to buy a fiddle to play in the streets to bring back the happiness to Fiddletown. Once that fiddle was in his hands, nobody was stopping him. He even impressed the local talent scout who would eventually send him on his first American tour.
Thus, the FiddleCat is born, highlighting celebrations of happiness throughout modern American history.

Oh my, Geoff.
But it all hinges on Washburn performing well. Forget groundball/flyball ratios. He’s a flyball pitcher. It’s not going to change overnight. It’s the quality of the flyballs that count. Are they hit hard to the gaps? Or popped up to outfielders who have all day to camp under them? When Washburn’s going well, it’s the latter. When he isn’t, the flyballs turn into extra-base hits.
I think those balls that are hit hard to the gaps are called line drives, Geoff. Washburn gives up a lot of them.
Well, to be fair, this is a mistake that was made right here last night.

Her only attachment to KOMO is covering the Mariners.
I suspect KIRO will offer her a contract.
I wonder how true the rumors are that KIRO is going all sports format to compete with KJR?
This is currently my signature.
KJR seems to take them pretty seriously.
I heard them talking about it the other morning.

Seems like KIRO would lose money doing that, but I say offer Groz a contract.
How funny would that be?
This is currently my signature.
Groz got screwed by KJR.
Offer him a contract, put him on the baseball and football coverage, and let him have his own timeslot from 7-10PM in the offseason.
Groz was the one personality they had that I could listen to.
Everyone else KJR employs are a bunch a blithering idiots.
Ugh. Softy kills me, but he supports Gilda's Club, so I have to at least respect him.

Softy and Mitch both suck.
The only decent thing about Mitch is when Millen is on there.

I wish i could get Seattle stations here in Eugene over the air.
I have eight watches. None of them are fake.

Felix @ Anaheim next Wednesday
I was kind of hoping that wouldn’t be a Felix Day because now I might actually have to drive to Anaheim to watch

I count only 12 guys with a lower BABIP, and only a few of those can match Beltre's LD%.
Konerko, Mark Ellis, Khalil Greene, Ramon Hernandez.
And Lard Deposit %
I fucking hate you Mariners
Lowe sucked it up pretty good.

I take it we're losing ugly?

Just wait until they waive Washburn.
We’ll smile again then.

Incidentally, Shaun Marcum has allowed one walk through 4 innings.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
