Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

This 8-6-08 FanPost is absolutely Off-Topic

... as if there is any gray area between on topic and off topic.

Some of you are not big fans of the off-topic threads.  Look at it this way: given the 300+ comments in yesterday's thread alone, and the hundreds of comments in each of the previous threads, there's definitely a use and demand for the threads.  Don't sweat it.  The game and recap threads are still fun, and discussion's hardly curtailed.  If anything, these threads open the door for discussion on more topics.

And a late Happy Birthday for Two R's and Two L's! He'll be celebrating by... working 13 hours. Sounds like my birthdays :P

So anyway, go for it.

A semi-baseball topic

Jim Caple over at ESPN thinks closers are overrated and the save is one of the dumbest statistics in baseball.

Bravo, Jim.

Why do teams do this when this is such a readily apparent poor use of resources?

“I’ll tell you why,” Oakland general manager Billy Beane says. “It’s the same reason more football coaches don’t go for it on fourth-and-1. Because when it doesn’t work, 30 of you guys come storming in wondering why the manager didn’t go to the closer. It’s turned into a situation where a lot of emotion is tied to that decision, just as a lot of emotion is tied to the fourth-down decision. Even if you know the odds, it’s more comfortable being wrong when you go to the closer or the punter.

“The position has become very media-driven. It became a national story when Boston announced it would go with a bullpen by committee.”

by BrianL on Aug 6, 2008 9:27 AM PDT reply actions

I mean, that's got to be worth an extra 1-3 wins over a season

if you use your best pitcher in the highest leverage situations.

the other angels fan

by Eyebrows on Aug 6, 2008 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Caple seems to think so.
The restricted role of closers not only is an inefficient use of their talent, it renders them useless during a prolonged losing streak because the team never has a lead in the ninth inning to protect. Putz “saved” 40 games last year with a 1.38 ERA, was named the team’s best pitcher by the local writers and the reliever of the year by the league. Yet when Seattle was in the midst of losing 13 of 14 games in late August and early September to tumble from the wild-card lead to hopelessly out of playoff contention, Putz pitched only twice. So when the team was floundering at a make-or-break point of the season, its supposed best pitcher - the league’s alleged best reliever - was of no help because the Mariners were not in official and proper “save situations.”

"Floundering at a make-or-break point of the season"

is perfectly acceptable. At least to me.

If it was “floundering their way to 13 consecutive losses” or something, maybe so. THIS season, they’re foundering. Last year, at the point described here, I think either would work.

What's funny is that had he said

“look, I know they’re different; ‘steroids’ has just become shorthand for PEDs; my bad, I’ll try to refrain from making that oversimplification in the future,” everything would have been fine.

Jeff/Matthew/Graham: “Wrong.”

He seemed so earnest at first.

When he posted that F the A’s picture he made, he was really sad that people didn’t like it.

Agreed

I tend to find people that naive fascinating. Forget not knowing the finer (or completely basic) points of baseball; it was like the guy was air-dropped into 2008 having never seen or heard of the internet before.

Track listing for Metallica's "Death Magnetic" is out

‘That Was Just Your Life’
‘The End Of The Line’
‘Broken, Beat & Scarred’
‘The Day That Never Comes’
‘All Nightmare Long’
‘Cyanide’
‘The Unforgiven III’
‘The Judas Kiss’
‘Suicide & Redemption’

Unforgiven III? Really Metallica? You know, I was actually considering giving this album a chance, because when did that cover of Iron Maiden’s “Remember Tomorrow” they sounded really really good(though that could of been because it’s a Maiden song, so the awesome could of rubbed off). But Unforgiven III? Uh oh’s.

The album will be available to download in the coming weeks.

Hah.

Another album to dl, copy, and give to everyone I can in response to their crappy RIAA shilling buy at full price and listen to quietly by myself while not letting anyone else hear, so I don’t make them go broke and lose their gigantic fucking houses.

this goes in off topic since it's drivel, but FYE.
STOPPED TO see the Angels before taking a red eye to St. Louis to hang with Manny, and heard Mark Teixeira say his three favorite places to play are New York, Seattle and Anaheim.

Is it safe to assume he will sign next year with New York, Seattle or the Angels?

“I said my three favorite stadiums are in those places,” Teixeira said.

If I don’t recognize them, I’m pretty sure that they’re about to be in peril.

Really, I should just set up a video camera to tape them from my desk and send it in to AFV or something and make a little cash.
