Off-Topical Punch

Ah, the Thursday before a long 3-day weekend. Today's going to draaaaag on isn't it? Here're some off-topic questions:

  • What are you going to do over Labor Day weekend?
  • Are you more excited for Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero World Tour?
  • Are the Amish overrated as a society?
  • What good books have you read recently?
  • Would you rather: Have no arms, but could swim faster than Michael Phelps; or, have no legs, but could run slither on the ground than Usain Bolt can run?

Will there be pie?

- Chilleth the fucketh out… and compile stats for run expectancy matricies.
- I play neither. I’ve tried Guitar Hero and was never any good at it. Never tried Rock Band.
- They’re just a culture. What they do is their business.
- I’ve read mostly poker books recently so I’m woefully unqualified to drop any titles here, but I’m learned surprisingly more about life from Arnold Snyder’s Poker Tournament Formula books than I thought I would.
- I HAVE NO LEGS ALALALALA I HAVE NO LEGS

You're really bored toady.

1. Working all weekend cause I was smart and took my vacation a week before labor day.
2. Neither, Magic the Gathering online is my current fix.
3. Fuck the amish.
4. I don’t read books so much as I read into the context of free online porn.
5. I’d lose the legs as long I could drag myself along on a big wheel when I’m not slithering on the ground.

I once spent 56 days straight offshore.

Liftboat in the GOM. The last week was a living hell, I was going insane and watching myself do it, very strange. Got to shore, stopped for a beer. Realized I was in Louisiana and Coors Lite was the the epitome of beer, I drove 24 hrs. straight until I reached Glenwood Springs CO. Steak, beer, hotspring pool, massage, hotel room. Rinse and repeat. Best weekend of my life and it was kind of unexceptional really.

I've got to believe that Chris Brown is going to end up being a bigger star than Usher

if his first two albums are any indication. Consider my psyched for the following releases in 2008/2009
The Fray
Yellowcard (they had better put something out next year…)
Goo Goo Dolls
Chris Brown

Some answers

Labor Day: BBQ sunday, beer
RB2 or GH: Don’t really care
Amish: I envy their desire for and achievement of simplicity in life
Recent good books: Born On A Blue Day, Atonement, and Here If You Need Me.
No arms/no legs: I’d rather have no legs and be the fastest wheelchair athlete alive.

Nope, not for me

I’d want to be a wheelchair distance racer. If I can’t bike any more, which having no legs would imply, then I want one of those lowrider racer wheelchairs and a whole lotta speed.

Then Shawne Merriman can decleat it and finish tearing every ligament in his left knee.

Seriously, Shawne Merriman, why do you think it’s a good idea to try and play linebacker when four doctors and your own GM told you to have surgery, and you have TWO torn knee ligaments? He lasts three games, tops

by seattlebruin on Aug 28, 2008 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait, he's seriously trying to play through it?

Dude, you’re not Stone Cold Steve Austin and you can’t wear bionic knee braces. Have surgery, rehab and be done with it. If it takes away your roid-rage speed and power, so be it.

by Gomez on Aug 28, 2008 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he's seriously trying to play through it

which is a pretty major indication of how stupid he must be, since he got four separate medical opinions that all said to have surgery, and yet he’s decided that the doctors are all wrong.

God, some people are dumb. It’s not like the Chargers are going to cut him or anything, he’s probably the best edge-rusher in the NFL for crying out loud

Colin Cowherd had an interesting point

Looking at the Chargers, the next two years is their window to win it all. Peyton’s hurt, NE’s defense is old and the Chargers have many players in their prime. I think Shawne wants to be on a Lombardi trophy team and enjoy the increase in value that comes with that. If he has surgery and the bolts win without him, his value plummets.

If he was on the Raiders, he’d be crazy to not have the surgery. I have a hard time blaming a guy for taking a risk with his body when the potential payoff is in the millions.

"Colin Cowherd had an interesting point"

Does not compute. God I LOATHE that asshole.

I don’t necessarily blame him for making this choice. The decision shouldn’t be his to make though. The team has a lot invested in him and risking that investment is pretty crazy.

Fear the NPE

by thewyrm on Aug 28, 2008 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but if he has the surgery and sits out the year, and proves he's healthy at the start of next year

he’s still in line for a huge contract, since the last impression of him playing football is of him being dominant as an edge rusher

If he plays this year and sucks, he’s potentially costing himself millions, especially if he gets hurt worse and possibly misses part of the 2009 season as well

FOOTBALL IS A MAN'S GAME PLAYED BY MEN SO DON'T BE A PANSY SHAWNE RUB SOME DIRT ON IT

seriously, this is most of the reason I detest A Football – that faux-macho attitude and the assumption that if you don’t have that you’re somehow less of an athlete than a guy who is dumb enough to want to play through two torn knee ligaments.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Aug 28, 2008 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it's a good mindset

The NFL propensity for players playing through bad injuries (and/or coaches making them do so) is one of their more serious problems.

by Gomez on Aug 28, 2008 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not even just in the NFL.

It definitely happens in high school where kids are told to keep running or do whatever despite any injuries. Then something like this happens.

Journey aren't great, but they're awesome

One of the best summations of Journey I’ve ever read came from Willamette Week, a few years back – the reviewer went through his standard “journey suck” thing, but then slowly brought himself around, and the last line was something like “You may mock Journey, and you wouldn’t be alone in that. But, you know as well as I do, that when you’re in your car and Separate Ways comes on the radio, that you’re dorking out to Journey just like the rest of us are.”

So Journey released an album a while back with their new singer. It was a double album.

One side was new songs, the other was a greatest hits collection. Okay, fair enough. . . however, the gretaest hits had been re-recorded with their new singer. Not only is is just shitty, but one of the least classy things I have ever seen a band that had moved on with a new singer ever do.

Labor Day Plans: Read. Then read some more.

Amish: Meh, having spent a weekend with them, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. They have cell phones for Chris’ sake.

I only started playing last March. I had been looking for a competitive outlet for years that was easy on my knees and I love it. Once I started getting the occasional under par round I must admit I became really hooked. I played about 3 times a week this summer.

I usually need to play a course 3-4 times to get a firm opinion. Can you get away with taking beers out on that course? That is one of the most important parts of how I rank a course.

I'm going - at least ~80% sure.

Scared of Chaka reunion show… I’ve been so giddy I think I’m going to start Mazzone’ing.
I’m in the same boat as pdb; it’s a work night and I’m old, and I don’t live in PDX, so I think I might die trying. But I must try.

Centro-matic puts on a great show – would’ve loved to have seen that. Will Johnson is a huge baseball fan, too.

I’d love to see Mogwai on Wednesday, and I might, but it’s not looking likely.

I’ve basically given up on festivals for the reasons many of you have mentioned, but I’m hoping MusicFestNW is different because it takes place in normal clubs. I may be kidding myself, but hey… I’m psyched for this, and yet I have zero interest whatsoever in Bumbershoot, going to which would not imperil my job/sanity.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Aug 28, 2008 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bumbershoot

- So crowded there are corridors you can’t even push through. Lines for anything are long and often slow or completely immobile.
- Most of your time at the festival is spent waiting in line to see whatever it is you want to see.
- If you don’t time your arrival right (i.e. arrive 90 minutes before start), you’re not going to see whatever you wanted to see at that particular time.
- Most of the performances are abbreviated versions of the real thing. For example, you’re not going to see a full Saul Williams concert. You’re going to see Saul Williams do 5-6 songs and then leave.

Not worth it, IMO. I went once. I’ll never go again. I could put the money and the time to FAR better use. It’s gotten too big for whatever it was meant to be.

by Thingray on Aug 28, 2008 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not abbreviated sets, actually

every show I’ve ever seen at Bumbershoot has been a full set Sometimes the sets are only 30-40 minutes, but if an artist only gets five songs in it’s their own fault or it’s the Melvins. That doesn’t invalidate your first three bullets or make it worth going, though.

Hey, so I heard Taco Time is giving out coupons for a free combo meal if you fill out a survey.

I don’t really see the survey on the site I was pointed to (http://www.tacotimenw.com/), and saw one post on some forum of some guy saying that he doesn’t see it anymore either. However, one guy says he saved the link to the coupon for people to print out here (http://praxiscrsurveys.com/sw/SwShared/hebert/Coupon.jpg), and people have responded saying that it worked when they printed it out too, without taking the survey.

I’m trying this the cheating way, but only because I can’t find the survey. There was a short customer feedback thing on their site that I mistook for it for that put me into a drawing for a gift card, but that can’t be it because people are saying the survey was like 15 minutes and this only took 2.

Did anyone here take the survey?

It depends on how good it is, IMO.

There’s a delicious taco truck in Northgate that I had gotten to know the people who run it fairly well and they just upped the price of their tacos to $1.25 because they said the cost of ingredients was getting high enough that they were losing profit. I’m willing to toss an extra buck to a family run biz if it means they stay in business and I still get my authentic tacos.

Oh, definitely agreed.

I’ve made it down to Mexico and San Diego several times and I absolutely love the taco stands on the street for 25 cents apiece. Not to mention a couple sit-down restaurants found at the mercado that made me some of the best meals I’ve ever had. If it wouldn’t eventually give me a stroke, I could live off the street food there for the rest of my life.

But before I ever made it down there or even went to a taco truck in Seattle, I loved Mexican restaurants up here like Azteca, Taco Time and the like — afterwords there wasn’t a chance in hell I’d ever put that crap in my mouth ever again. That’s why taco trucks around here were such a breath of fresh air for me, even if they weren’t quite the very best I’ve ever had. 95 percent of the way there is good enough for me until the next time I make vacation plans south of the border or at least border states.

It depends, if you ask me.

I opted for a 3rd gen 80 GB Video IPod over an 8 GB Touch and actually kinda regret it. I used the same logic, going with more space for my buck, but I only use like 10 GB of it because I just never watch any video on it since the screen is so small I find it unenjoyable. I’d be willing to shed 2 gigs of what I use for the bigger screen that I actually enjoy watching and having the internet in my pocket without paying a monthly fee. Instead, I only use my IPod for my car stereo and bought an expensive phone (a Voyager) that I pay $30 a month for the internet and GPS capabilities I need for my job.

Not a ton of storage, but the screen is nice (video codecs kinda suck, but I’m sure that’s fixable if I had cause to try), GREAT battery.

It supported many codes

Zune only supports wmv which is my only real gripe.

I can even do with a duller screen and fewer colors because the screen is so much bigger and will rest on it’s side without having to be propped up.

by bluemax on Aug 28, 2008 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Facebook blows Myspace out of the water as far as social networking.

They seem to have no interest in becoming a tool for bands, comedians, filmmakers and the like, which is what keeps Myspace relevant. Since Myspace has changed their layout and functionality to closer mirror Facebook’s, these things have suffered. I have a Myspace because it makes booking shows/tours easier, it’s great for networking with labels, promoters and other bands, making it easier to stay DIY, and it’s a great way for me to find out about new bands and less well publicized shows. It’s becoming harder to do these things lately because of the ongoing redesigns.

J.K.L.

by acblue on Aug 28, 2008 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well that is because

Myspace was originally a simple hosting site for BANDS and only when they saw how popular the comments section was did they realize they could branch it out from there.

Facebook was conceived as a way for college students to get in touch with people around campus/keep in touch with HS friends at other colleges.

If it wasn't for college football I'd probably have given up on sports.

by bluemax on Aug 28, 2008 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't work for local bands, though.

by Thingray on Aug 28, 2008 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

More that you don't have to hire a booking agent.

And for show spaces, it’s kinda’ hard to flyer for all-ages shows in basements and at warehouse spaces since they’re illegal and all, so it’s a great way to get the word out.

J.K.L.

by acblue on Aug 28, 2008 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So a DIY space is where you just rent warehouse or basement space and throw a show,

but their illegal since it isn’t a licensed club, etc.

I'm back to liking midgets too much.

by Thingray on Aug 28, 2008 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty much, yeah.

Seattle has really dreadful laws about what makes an all-ages show legal, and the city is pretty anti-nightlife in general. Basically, it’s impossible to run a legit all-ages venue that has smaller shows unless you get funding from the city (Vera Project) or are a businessperson looking to screw over bands (pretty much everywhere else.)

There are lots of houses that have shows on a regular basis, but advertising publicly for these kinds of shows is risky because you never know what kinds of random people will show up. When people seek you out on Myspace or hear about you through word of mouth, it cuts the risks involved significantly.

J.K.L.

by acblue on Aug 28, 2008 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, I feel compelled to point out that I'm not talking "kegger and bands, woo!"

LSU fans not missing him so far.

I love it

I hope more schools bring it back. Triple option is so much more fun than the spread read option.

Awesome

3 minutes left in the half and they rush twice for 63 yards and a TD.

South Carolina's QB was just carted off on a stretcher

I turned on the game (ESPN) right as they loaded him up.

This hurt my heart.

They’re saying it’s a concussion. They took him straight to the hospital. FUCK. That’s all we need. I miss winning seasons.

I don't feel anything anymore.

Wait a minute - I wasn't watching earlier...

A friend told me they were taking him to the hospital, but I’m now seeing replays of NC States QB getting the concussion… Did they both, or was this a mistake???

I don't feel anything anymore.

Yeah, shit!

Scared the hell out of me! Beecher’s still in the game – it’s their guy. I hope he’s alright.

I don't feel anything anymore.

What's worse than getting swept by the Padres?

Getting swept by the Nationals, after getting swept by the Phillies in 4 games.

If LA gets swept by Arizona starting tomorrow, I’m gonna start including the DBacks magic number in my sig.

And to add to it, Justin Upton returns tomorrow.

Adam Dunn will move to first base. I would guess that Tony Clark will be DFA’d to make room for Upton. The interesting question is what are they going to do with Chad Tracy? Will they bench him, or will they move him to third and Reynolds to 2nd? Augie Oejada is doing his best Willie 2008 impression, showing zero power but he is getting on base at a .362 clip since taking over for O-Dawg. And his defense is a good deal better than Reynolds.

Don't people think it's about time to unrec this post?

It’s been almost a week for a Off-Topic of the day post, and I might add, the only one ever to be on the rec list, despite having less comments than at least half.

I get that the tag was funny, but doesn’t it bug anyone else to look for the new OFFTOP and see that one up on the top of the Diary list instead?

Don't the recs simply expire after a while?

Or do people have to unrec something to get it to go away?

Two weeks, I think

I also don’t like the precedent that we’d start by un-recing FanPosts – it was a great tag, and should be thought of as such. It’ll go away on its own in a few days anyway, and what I was really going for was bringing back rec-ing in a not annoying way for things that actually deserve recs, like creative and funny tags/comments

by seattlebruin on Sep 3, 2008 7:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

At the same time, I feel that items like events and Daily posts like this shouldn't

be on the rec list for longer than their usefulness. It’s one thing to recog a post permanently, for example a post on the best places to park around the Safe is something that numerous people can use over a long period of time (not saying I’d rec it, but I’d understand the sentiment).

On the other hand are posts like this, which are good for the day they are relevant, then after not so much. I can’t even really complain about the event ones, because usually the event wrapup and pictures are in an update. However, if an event update is listed in a separate post, then I think the original event should be un-rec’d.

I just like things to look nice and clean, and this is something that may not hurt the community now, but will if there is a large uptick in site usage (like if we had a playoff run, or certain people merged their blogs with here). I’ve found as a forum moderator that if you don’t set a precident for cleaning the stickies (to borrow a forum term), it’s harder to once the forum is popular and it becomes nessicary.

Heh, you said stickies.

I think you have a good point, though.

I agree with the sentiment

but on the other hand, we also have a way for moderators to put useful posts like that on the left hand sidebar, and even if we rec a useful post to get it to the top of the page, it’s still going to go away in a few weeks anyway, like the LL-Encyclopedia or the LLHOF

by seattlebruin on Sep 3, 2008 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not arguing that.

The permanent ones like the Encyclo (which I would keep up to date if it would have been sidebarred, BTW) should be sidebarred. That’s Jeff’s discretion completely. But ones like the shirt design, or the PI update, don’t need to be around forever. The recommended list is perfect for them.

I’m just saying that when this place gets popular again, there’s most likely going to be a problem getting and keeping the “true” recommended content (like the PI post) on the list when it’s full of expired daily content, especially when rec counts rise with readership.

I’m not really that ruffled by it, I’m just an old forum admin that’s trying to share a little of his experience. If you or anyone else don’t listen to me, that’s cool, and hopefully the SBN platform is robust enough to handle quirks like this when the recs start getting abused again.

Don't get me wrong, I think you're right that we should have a way to control these kinds of things better

but I just don’t like the idea of un-recing things in general. I think once you’ve written something good/amusing enough to deserve a rec, it should stay there. Perhaps we can get the Rec’d FanPost time shortened, since it seems like the mods can control that kind of thing, and then for more important FanPosts, someone can keep them up to date. That way the site doesn’t look cluttered at the top, and we can still recognize good work with a few days on top of the list
