Off-Topical Punch
Ah, the Thursday before a long 3-day weekend. Today's going to draaaaag on isn't it? Here're some off-topic questions:
- What are you going to do over Labor Day weekend?
- Are you more excited for Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero World Tour?
- Are the Amish overrated as a society?
- What good books have you read recently?
- Would you rather: Have no arms, but could swim faster than Michael Phelps; or, have no legs, but could run slither on the ground than Usain Bolt can run?

- Chilleth the fucketh out… and compile stats for run expectancy matricies.
- I play neither. I’ve tried Guitar Hero and was never any good at it. Never tried Rock Band.
- They’re just a culture. What they do is their business.
- I’ve read mostly poker books recently so I’m woefully unqualified to drop any titles here, but I’m learned surprisingly more about life from Arnold Snyder’s Poker Tournament Formula books than I thought I would.

I once spent 56 days straight offshore.
Liftboat in the GOM. The last week was a living hell, I was going insane and watching myself do it, very strange. Got to shore, stopped for a beer. Realized I was in Louisiana and Coors Lite was the the epitome of beer, I drove 24 hrs. straight until I reached Glenwood Springs CO. Steak, beer, hotspring pool, massage, hotel room. Rinse and repeat. Best weekend of my life and it was kind of unexceptional really.

Colin Cowherd had an interesting point
Looking at the Chargers, the next two years is their window to win it all. Peyton’s hurt, NE’s defense is old and the Chargers have many players in their prime. I think Shawne wants to be on a Lombardi trophy team and enjoy the increase in value that comes with that. If he has surgery and the bolts win without him, his value plummets.
If he was on the Raiders, he’d be crazy to not have the surgery. I have a hard time blaming a guy for taking a risk with his body when the potential payoff is in the millions.

Yeah, but if he has the surgery and sits out the year, and proves he's healthy at the start of next year
he’s still in line for a huge contract, since the last impression of him playing football is of him being dominant as an edge rusher
If he plays this year and sucks, he’s potentially costing himself millions, especially if he gets hurt worse and possibly misses part of the 2009 season as well

Journey aren't great, but they're awesome
One of the best summations of Journey I’ve ever read came from Willamette Week, a few years back – the reviewer went through his standard “journey suck” thing, but then slowly brought himself around, and the last line was something like “You may mock Journey, and you wouldn’t be alone in that. But, you know as well as I do, that when you’re in your car and Separate Ways comes on the radio, that you’re dorking out to Journey just like the rest of us are.”

So Journey released an album a while back with their new singer. It was a double album.
One side was new songs, the other was a greatest hits collection. Okay, fair enough. . . however, the gretaest hits had been re-recorded with their new singer. Not only is is just shitty, but one of the least classy things I have ever seen a band that had moved on with a new singer ever do.

Amish: Meh, having spent a weekend with them, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. They have cell phones for Chris’ sake.
Books: None of the books I’m currently reading qualifies here, but Age of Turbulence, probably is the best book I’ve read in the last couple of months.
Finally, I’d rather have all my extremities and be as slow as I currently am.

God I need this 3 day weekend
- Spending Saturday in Portand for a co-bachelor/bachelorette party and hopefully playing one of the amazing Disc Golf Courses in the Portland area.
- I like Rock Band because it is a more social game
- Spent a week with an Amish family once and they are amazingly strange.
- My wife has been making me read Vonnegut lately.
- No legs I guess.

You know I do not have a favorite yet.
I only started playing last March. I had been looking for a competitive outlet for years that was easy on my knees and I love it. Once I started getting the occasional under par round I must admit I became really hooked. I played about 3 times a week this summer.
I usually need to play a course 3-4 times to get a firm opinion. Can you get away with taking beers out on that course? That is one of the most important parts of how I rank a course.

I'm going - at least ~80% sure.
Scared of Chaka reunion show… I’ve been so giddy I think I’m going to start Mazzone’ing.
I’m in the same boat as pdb; it’s a work night and I’m old, and I don’t live in PDX, so I think I might die trying. But I must try.
Centro-matic puts on a great show – would’ve loved to have seen that. Will Johnson is a huge baseball fan, too.
I’d love to see Mogwai on Wednesday, and I might, but it’s not looking likely.
I’ve basically given up on festivals for the reasons many of you have mentioned, but I’m hoping MusicFestNW is different because it takes place in normal clubs. I may be kidding myself, but hey… I’m psyched for this, and yet I have zero interest whatsoever in Bumbershoot, going to which would not imperil my job/sanity.

Bumbershoot
- So crowded there are corridors you can’t even push through. Lines for anything are long and often slow or completely immobile.
- Most of your time at the festival is spent waiting in line to see whatever it is you want to see.
- If you don’t time your arrival right (i.e. arrive 90 minutes before start), you’re not going to see whatever you wanted to see at that particular time.
- Most of the performances are abbreviated versions of the real thing. For example, you’re not going to see a full Saul Williams concert. You’re going to see Saul Williams do 5-6 songs and then leave.
Not worth it, IMO. I went once. I’ll never go again. I could put the money and the time to FAR better use. It’s gotten too big for whatever it was meant to be.

Not abbreviated sets, actually
every show I’ve ever seen at Bumbershoot has been a full set Sometimes the sets are only 30-40 minutes, but if an artist only gets five songs in it’s their own fault or it’s the Melvins. That doesn’t invalidate your first three bullets or make it worth going, though.

Glad to see you are being safe.
We’re thinking of you. I know most of my family is too stubborn to leave, so I hope and pray they will stay safe.

I think you should be required to do the OTFPOTD from work one day
which consists entirely of liveblogging your purchase orders and current Pandora song

Wait until my two weeks off.
I’ll stumble into your OTFP’s at like 3 in the afternoon when I stumble outta bed and tell you all how kick ass it is to have fuck all to do all day but drink beer and play Rock Band.

A=Anderson; B=Boundary; C=Chimay
D=Deschutes/Duvel? E=Elysian….
R=Rogue, S=Stone, T=Terminal
Anyway, WTF would be Westvleteren Terminal Fish, I think….

Or a pretty cool Ensoniq sampler if you’re the musician type…

My wife's ex boyfriend had a metal band called Iron Cherry.
I love that name.

After seeing a pamphlet on the ground, I decided that Genocide in Sudan would be a pretty unique name
Otherwise I’m naming my “The Arthur Rhodes Yankee Stadium Experience”

I've always wanted to name a band...
…Morbid Rainbow.
I guess that’s what happens when you OD on Depeche Mode and The Cure when you’re growing up…

I actually thought of that too
I used to listen to Morbid Angel, and hey, Reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton! Put the two together, and you’ve got Morbid Rainbow, a new romantic band or a tv show teaching kids to read using HR Giger, Viking mythology and tales of Mongol atrocities in the 13th century.

To answer your questions:
a) Getting ready for, having, and cleaning up from a huge Sunday BBQ.
b) I don’t play either game, so I don’t care.
c) Everthing I know about the Amish I learned from “Kingpin”.
d) Too be honest, I haven’t read a good book in ages.
e) I’ll take no legs but still be faster than Bolt. I’d be some kind of freak superhero.

This is what sports journalism needs
more ex-jocks who can actually write a story in a way that relates to a normal person, unlike say, Tiki Barber

Little environmental lab in Portland.
They decided to close the lab and just do field work. I think they just wanted to get out of my paid vacation day on Monday.
