Aug. 23rd OT Thread, Late Night/Early Bird Special!
It seems everyone has gotten to make one of them and the times for making their own OT thread, so I thought in order for me to get the privilege to make one (since I am never up before 9 or 10 in the morning), I have to beat everyone to it!. Anyways, a few possible icebreakers...
- Anyone go see the House Bunny? Yea, I thought it sucked to, but I think I am man enough to admit there were one or two funny moments in the movie.
- Fall is just around the corner, meaning new seasons for our favorite prime time shows, which are...?
- The Olympics are just about over. They were fun, watching Michael Phelps win 8 medals and all, but if the Olympics were a meme, I think they've been dead memed by now.
- Des anyone exercise here? If so what's your favorite exercise regiments? Cardio machine?
- Anyone play the guitar around here and have a spare acoustic laying around?
O yes, and

Umm I just totally want to say that I love you guys,
and I may not be around this weekend because I have a fucking life, and even though I went to the Mariners game tonight and we won, I just totally love you guys, and I’m hoping I can TTYL. I hope to spend all of my Monday posting pictures of dead memes and joking with you about Coach’s progress through puberty. In the meantime, I’ll be over at MC writing as though I completely understand all the charts and graphs being presented, and come up with a comment akin to, “yeah, and then I totally farted.” That’s my thing.

This one isn’t a question, so I have no idea, but I need for things to stay in order.

No, but go to the pawn shop with $25 and make friends with a guitar player that can set it up for you.

Not necessarily.
A lot of people don’t have any idea what guitar are actually worth. And Ovations are nice, but they’re not super expensive. Check it out, make sure it’s not super fucked up or anything (holes, stripped tuning pegs, etc) and see if it sounds decent. Anything else that’s wrong with it can be fixed easily and cheaply.

I don't know enough about acoustic guitars to say definitively.
With electric guitars, amps and effects, though, my general rule is that buying online is fine for super mass-market stuff with a reputation for consistency (Boss and Fender are two examples that come to mind) while it should be avoided with most things vintage and flaky (Electro-Harmonix pedals are amazing but 3/10 of them don’t work right, the earlier discussion about fluctuating build quality amongst Epiphones, etc.)
So if it’s what you want, and that particular model has consistently high ratings (check Harmony Central) I’d say go for it.

I think it is probably best idea to go to a store in person and try out guitars before buying one.
JI/Robert '08!
by Fin on Aug 23, 2008 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Generally, buying a new guitar without playing it is bad news.
Lemons tend to weed themselves out of the used market. And while most Applauses are pretty decent, there’s a lot of inconsistency at the lower end of the market, so the “play before you buy” rule applies doubly in this case.
J.K.L.
by acblue on Aug 23, 2008 1:33 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep.
Never, ever, ever, ever buy any kind of an instrment without putting it through a solid playtest. While I was working at Mills I’d insist customers take things out on a free 48-hour approval contract before purchasing.
by BrianL on Aug 23, 2008 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So could I ask to take out one of these contracts, even though you aren't there?
JI/Robert '08!
by Fin on Aug 23, 2008 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ok, I realize I asked that weird.
What I meant was, do most other employees of Mills Music encourage this? What are the conditions of the contract?
JI/Robert '08!
by Fin on Aug 23, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I could meet you there if you'd like, I'm still on payroll.
The contract requires your name, address, credit card number, social security number (background checks, we kind of have to with the equipment and gear we rent out). Good for 48 hours, exceed that point at you’ll be charged a fee (though we’re pretty lenient).
While you have the instrument the contract is stored under lock in key in our offices. After you return it the contract is destroyed.
Seems excessive, but unfortunately we’ve been burned before and with the state of the industry right now, we have to run with these rules in place. Sadly it’s the same no matter where you go (Guitar Center, Kennelly Keys, Cascade Music etc).

Soon there will be two worlds.
One of smokers and one that is pure.
Interestingly enough, and this is something I’ve noticed since HS, the smoker crowd from my age set (right around 25) tends to shrink as age goes up, aside from the hardcore and the partiers. There is a total of one friend I have left that smokes, as all others have quit or have been ostracized from the group. He is given shit every time he steps outside. This also extends out of my circle as well, as I have noticed that there are just a couple smokers my age left in my company, and none of the hires younger than I or my age smoke.
Anyone else notice things like this, or am I just tired from 12 hours of driving and rambling?
by Faux on Aug 23, 2008 1:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea, and that's good.
What’s not good is that I’ve noticed a lot of younger people I have never that feel perfectly comfortable giving me shit for smoking without provocation. I’m a big fan of leaving people the hell alone.
J.K.L.
by acblue on Aug 23, 2008 1:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well it's a double standerd.
It’s ok to give shit to someone you don’t know that’s a smoker, but yet, it’s not ok to tell the fat person you don’t know stuffing their face to put the food down and go to the gym.
And everyone at my work except me seems to smoke, but then again, its the restaurant business, so I am not surprised.
JI/Robert '08!
by Fin on Aug 23, 2008 1:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
At this point in time, my smoking doesn't really effect anyone else negatively.
I can’t smoke inside, I don’t smoke near doorways and I never out my butts out on the street. Most (certainly not all) smokers I know try to be similarly courteous. But there has been such a social backlash over the last few years that people seem to feel that catching even a whiff of cigarette smoke is somehow a personal affront. They don’t like it, and so they feel the right to air their displeasure. The thing is, ignoring things you don’t like is part of being a human being. If I had it my way, every person I saw wearing sweatpants and flip-flops in public would get five across the eyes. But I can’t have everything my way, and I know better than to make personal judgments on people based upon choices they make that don’t impact me in any meaningful way. All I ask is to be given similar treatment.

It's sort of hard to tell people nicely how they can improve their driving.
Especially when the asshole in the beemer is long gone from running red lights and cutting through traffic.
In my old crappy car, I used to keep eggs in the glovebox. That worked pretty well. I would also intentionally slam on my brakes when someone I see diving through traffic come swerving up behind me looking to get around. I’ve found most people don’t want to get into accidents, and the assholes of the world use that to their advantage. Slamming on your brakes w/o caring whether you get into an accident makes those people reconsider their driving choices.
That being said, I also wave nicely at people that make good choices, and keep a whiteboard in my car to tell people about flats and broken lights.

There is a chance I might be moving to a new rig that is in pre-fab right now in Portland.
I might get to spend a lot of time down there before we drive it up here to Prudhoe. Not sure how much free time I would have, but are the things one must do while in Portland.

There are many.
Really depends what you’re into. There’s lots of good bars, more strip bars per capita than any city in the US, good music, decent parks/outdoor opportunities (“Decent” in that there’s a billion of them, none of them stellar but all of them reasonably good and easy to get to), and lots of good food.
I’ve gotta run now but I’ll post some stuff/places to check out later. When would you be down here?

I've been meaning to ask this but how would one be able to find a job similar to yours?
by Robert on Aug 23, 2008 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The oil industry is one of those that has never broken from the good old boys network.
I got my foot in the door because of my Grandfather, Father, and Uncle. My Uncle being the General Manager of the company I work for. I started out doing bitch work on the rig, cleaning and what not. Then moved up to Roughnecking for a few years on the rig floor. Then, BP was having some trouble on one of our rigs and requested they send someone out to help the Rig managers keep up with their work load. Sheer chance had led me to have had a conversation about computers a day before my Superintendent got this order, so he thought “Why not joe?”
So my job specifically does not exist every where in the oil patch, and they now use me as a trouble shooter, I go from rig to rig to help them get caught up with their clerical stuff.
If you are interested in a job roughnecking, just send a resume to any drilling contractor. I would warn you though, that rigs in the Lower 48 are not as environmentally responsible or as safe as Alaskan ones. If you are serious about a good job in the patch, then Petroleum Engineering is the way to go. BP will often hire you before you even graduate and starting salaries are ridiculous.

I play ultimate frisbee to stay in shape.
I’ve tried the work out for it’s own sake and never had the motivation to stick with it.

Yea its quite a commitment to stick to it day in and day out.
Half the time my girlfriend has to drag me to the gym, but I end up thanking her after I work out.

That's why walking in great.
It’s much easier for me to exercise when I don’t think of it as exercise. So I walk the three miles to work and back a few times a week and convince myself I’m doing it because it’s a nice day, I’m saving gas, etc. and then the 20 minutes it takes to do crunches and push ups don’t seem like such a big deal.

That is good, whatever works best for you.
I’ve been starting going back to the gym a couple of weeks ago, just doing 40 minutes of cardio, followed by crunches, push ups, pull ups, and dip downs.

Its not so bad if you are listening to a good playlist.
Or if you go to a gym with TVs on the cardio machine, like mine.

I gave up the little interest I had in the NBA after the Sonics were taken away.

But I do think it’s about time the Mariners and the Marlins take the teal out of their uniforms.

I am hoping they use the forest green that would match Safeco field. But I think the vintage look would be more popular.

Mfan, I miss you from MC.
Some dicks in our section tonight tried to start the wave.
Hard to do when there are less than 20,000 “fans,” and most of those “fans” are given tickets by their corporate sponsor.
The wave failed, and I loved the fail.
