Special Limited Edition "Down Under!" Off Topic Fanpost of the Day
(I can do one too so shut up. Hey, that might as well be a topic for today! "Why Coach is not allowed to make OTFPOTD(s)!) Anyway, since this the "Down Under" edition of OTFPOTD, it has nothing to do with RRS. However, there are some great other topics you can talk about:
*Why Australians talk with funny accents
*Why my ingrown toenail won't go away and why it keeps bothering me
*You guys can talk about BEER (AKA disgusting dribble for older people)
*Why will they rid of baseball in the Olympics despite the third most populous country having a whole, huge professional league and the fact that it has started to spread across the entire world
*Why Crack Cocaine is illegal
Or other topics that I totally don't care about but you guys might because we're all totally different people.

Ballroom Blitz almost got me thrown out of a limo in Vegas
it’s a great song, and it happens to be one of my best friend’s favorites; we’d been drinking for a good portion of the weekend, and got a comped limo from (turn away now Coach) one of Vegas’ fine adult dancing establishments. As we’re about a block from the hotel, Ballroom Blitz came on the stereo, and my friend dove across the limo, cranked up the volume, and blew out a speaker in the back of the limo.
The driver wanted to throw us out right there but we pointed out that he was already in the driveway of our hotel, so he took us in. We tipped him heavily and he forgot all about his speaker. Good times.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
You know how repetitive "In Bloom" and "Say it Ain't So" get?
About 80% of “Mystery Setlists” have either one or both of those in them.
"Hole in one, eh?"
It costs money. I can't just skip along buying Microsoft Points like it's no big deal!
"Hole in one, eh?"
Play more challenging venues then.
You keep getting those songs because they are the two easiest ones to do.
Fear the NPE
Well I don't have it. My friend brought it over for one day
and we only got so far before he got bored and we switched to Madden.
"Hole in one, eh?"
I'll get back to this later when I have time.

In Bloom – Meh
Learn to Fly – Excellent
Main Offender – Meh

Mississippi Queen – Good
Next to You – Meh
Orange Crush – Good

Sabotage – Good
Say it Ain’t So – Good

Suffragette City – Good

Tom Sawyer – Excellent
Train Kept A-Rollin’ – Good
Vasoline – Excellent

The Boston DLC was excellent, the Metallica DLC was excellent, the Black Sabbath DLC was good, The Bowie DLC was good, the Oasis DLC was good, the Jimmy Buffett DLC was surprisingly fun. The only real failures (I think) in Rock Band so far is the Fallout Boy song, and releasing the entire “Doolittle” album by the Pixies as DLC. It’s a fantastic album, but doesn’t really work for Rock band.

by Mariner John on Aug 22, 2008 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree with this.
And I think once GHWT comes out, most people will forget about Rock Band, because all Rock Band really has on GH is the drums and singing, and without it, it shouldn’t be as good. I mean the guitar for Rock Band is a piece of shit compared to the guitar hero one, and the graphics suck, and the songs aren’t nearly as challenging on expert in Rock Band as they are in Guitar Hero (Probably because rock band is a tad bit slower). And the drums for GHWT will be much better too, with the cymbals.
JI/Robert '08!
I'm not sure I do.
Rock Band has the wealth of songs that GHIII doesn’t. That’s the biggest advantage.

But GHWT will come with a song creator.
So yea. This may sound dorky, but if there is a song I want to play that isn’t in the game, I look up the song on youtube for someone who probably hacked GH2 and created the song there, so I usually just play along. Disadvantage is I don’t know what notes I missed or my score, but its still fun if you get bored to the same songs.
JI/Robert '08!
Sure you can.
The vocal track will just be like a synthesizer melody with words. You just won’t hear any vocals in the vocal track.

I always thought they looked plastic and cheap
I love how Gibsons look— probably because they remind me of classic era Who or Chris Cornell before he turned into a Justin Timberlake / Michael Bolton hybrid.
Although I like the blackout telelcaster
I always thought Eddie Vedder’s guitar playing sounded best on that guitar.
They look like everything else designed in that period.
And they are more cheaply made than Gibsons, but they’re still solid and take way more of a beating that more expensive guitars. They also sound like nothing else in the world.

I just dislike the thinner sound
In no way am I any sort of expert
I think PT sounds much better on Gibsons, he switched over to Strats in 89(?) and has never sounded quite as mean since.
Gibsons are better for some things, and I would say that Pete Townshend's guitar tone is one of them.

I love my Gibson Les Paul
But for light stuff I still love my plastic Dan Electro. I never liked the Strat or Tele that much.
I have a Squire Strat, that for whatever unimagineable reason, is the best sounding guitar I've owned.
Even over my old custom Paul Reed Smith.
This is currently my signature.
Squiers and Epiphones are amazing in their inconsistency.
I’ve played a few Epi SGs that cost a third of what a Gibson SG would cost that sounded a million times better, and I’ve played a few upmarket Epiphones that sounded like they were bought at Target. Same deal (though, in my experience, to a lesser extent) with Squiers.

Are Squire and Epi still made in Mexico?
I have had the same experience as you. It is a gamble to go cheap, that is why Trading Musician rocks.
Squiers are usually made in Korea, as are most Epiphones.
Entry level Fenders are made in Korea, mid level Fenders are made in Mexico and upmarket Fenders are (generally) made in the US. Top of the line Epiphones are made at the Gibson factory.

It's generally true, especially taken in concert with the era it's from.
For example, Japanese made guitars from the 1980s? Ugh. Japanese made guitars from the 1970s? Yes please.

Some Strats are made in Mexico and will be marked on the bridge.
The nicer ones are USA made.
My first guitar was a Squire fat strat. But I've given it away.
I’ve now got a Rainsong A-WS1000 (acoustic electric, my primary instrument), Fender Hot Rodded American Double Fat Strat, and an Epiphone Dot.
My Squire Strat SUUUUUUCKS.

And I have no idea what it is anymore.
If it was ever a movement then that is dead. If it was raw music that is dead also. Most punk sounds like metal to me these days.
As a movement, it's been dead since the 70's at least.
As an ideology, it’s still very much alive. As a genre, people call lots of things punk, but I personally think all 14 year olds with musical aspirations should be in either ‘77 style crusty bands, 80’s hardcore bands or Ramones-y pop-punk bands.

Well, it's more about punk being easy to play and not being lame when you sound pissed off.
When 14 year olds try to “push their boundaries” it’s painfully obvious how narrow said boundaries are. Just play fast and loud and yell a lot and you’ll be fine. When you’re older, though, and have a wider range of influences and experience to draw from, it’s not as big a deal.

Those bands are terrible, because their first single is always a bad (but harmless) funny, poppy song.
Then it sells well, and they go “Yes! People like us! Okay, let’s bust out the deeply meaningful navel gazing shit!” And 14 year old girls cry and 14 year old boys put it on before they put the moves on 14 year old girls and they sell millions of records and eventually they have some sort of artistic credibility, simply because they’re able to manipulate the emotions of 14 year olds.

Good, not great, first few albums/years with a lot of potential, but right when they should hit their prime they inexplicably just go straight in the toilet.

No, no.
It’s just that… I don’t know. If you go through all the music they did, it’s so diverse. To say that, across the board, you don’t care for them is a pretty broad statement. It’s hard to imagine what rock styles are left, once you take out all The Beatles. If they had awful voices or something, it might make some sense, I guess, but that’s not it, right?

Someone who is talented and could write good music is Paul Simon
Yea, his singing voice wasn’t as great as Garfunkel’s, but he was able to sell records 20-40 years after his Simon and Garfunkel years, which I determined is proof you’re a good songwriter if you could still be popular after going solo.

My favorite album, seriously, is “You’re the One” and it’s not even close.

I may sound like an old fogie listening to S&G even though I am 19
But I used to always listen to it as a kid when my dad would play Paul Simon in the concert cd in my car. Going back and listening to it now I can appreciate more how good Paul Simon actually was.

I agree.

You could even see good national acts for cheap. I saw Primus twice in one month for a total cost of $18. I can’t remember how many times I saw The Melvins for under $10.
It's probably too bad though that Pearl Jam had that issue with TicketMaster back in their prime
So you couldn’t go to many of their shows back then. I still want to see them, but Seattle doesn’t seem to be a hot spot for them, despite being from here.

New Alfas haven’t come to our country since 1995. Except as of 2008 we get the 8C Competizione, which MSRPs for US$250,000.
In a couple years we are supposed to get regular Alfas back
Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Washingtonhighways.org
Yeah
It was originally announced in 2002 for the ’04 model year. Every year they delayed it until now we finally get the 8C.
The growing Maserati dealership base helps as Alfa and Maserati are both owned by Fiat, but GM selling its stake in Fiat a couple years ago threw a fork in it- they were originally going to sell Alfas alongside Saabs.
But now they are going to probably be bringing the nuovo 500 over in Abarth trim pretty soon which should open things up for Alfa

Two possibilities:

I ran into a (drunk) buddy of mine at the Seahawks game last week,
and he gave both me and my GF the reach-around right in front of her Dad (who was attending his first Seahawks game). Then he turns towards Dad, and Dad just sticks his hand out and says “a handshake will do just fine”.
I wasn’t sure if he was amused, or if he was kind of freaked out. I don’t think an old ex-marine is a big fan of the reach-around.

I can actually answer that one.
A “dead blow hammer” is a plastic (orange in this case) hammer, and the head is filled with sand. So when you strike whatever object you’re hammering, the hammer doesn’t bounce back, it just stops “dead” after the “blow”.

I love it when people say "Hi, how are you?"
And act confused and/or annoyed when I respond “Doing well, how are you?”
J.K.L.
I think its more of a rhetorical question.
Where they already expect the answer, so they don’t plan on responding to an answer different than “good thanks”.

I always want to say
“Actually not that well. My mom/dad/goldfish/puppy died today.” But I never can, because I know most of these people are just trying to be nice as part of their job.
I should qualify that. I don't always want to say that. I'm not a dick
But sometimes I just don’t want to deal with the happy bubbly person on the other side of the conversation.
