Special Limited Edition "Down Under!" Off Topic Fanpost of the Day

(I can do one too so shut up. Hey, that might as well be a topic for today! "Why Coach is not allowed to make OTFPOTD(s)!) Anyway, since this the "Down Under" edition of OTFPOTD, it has nothing to do with RRS. However, there are some great other topics you can talk about:

Star-divide

*Why Australians talk with funny accents

*Why my ingrown toenail won't go away and why it keeps bothering me

*You guys can talk about BEER (AKA disgusting dribble for older people)

*Why will they rid of baseball in the Olympics despite the third most populous country having a whole, huge professional league and the fact that it has started to spread across the entire world

*Why Crack Cocaine is illegal

Or other topics that I totally don't care about but you guys might because we're all totally different people.

Another interesting note. Have you seen the movie Blow, where Johnny Depp says every girl he met in California had the same job, stewardess?

Well in Japan it’s the same way, except they all work at hostess bars. Basically really expensive bars for Japanese business men. It’s wild.

Ballroom Blitz almost got me thrown out of a limo in Vegas

it’s a great song, and it happens to be one of my best friend’s favorites; we’d been drinking for a good portion of the weekend, and got a comped limo from (turn away now Coach) one of Vegas’ fine adult dancing establishments. As we’re about a block from the hotel, Ballroom Blitz came on the stereo, and my friend dove across the limo, cranked up the volume, and blew out a speaker in the back of the limo.

The driver wanted to throw us out right there but we pointed out that he was already in the driveway of our hotel, so he took us in. We tipped him heavily and he forgot all about his speaker. Good times.

Here goes.

Don’t Fear the Reaper – Excellent
Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Meh
Ballroom Blitz – Fun (though, really, only on vocals)
Black Hole Sun – Excellent
Blitzkrieg Bop – Meh
Celebrity Skin – Meh
Cherub Rock – Excellent
Creep – Good
Dani California – Good
Dead on Arrival – Boo
Detroit Rock City – Boo
Electric Version – Meh
Enter Sandman – Excellent
Epic – Meh
Flirtin’ With Disaster – Good
Foreplay/Long Time – Excellent
Gimme Shelter – Good
Go With the Flow – Good
Green Grass and High Tides – Meh (WAAAAY too long)
Here it Goes Again – Good
Highway Star – Good
I Think I’m Paranoid – Meh
In Bloom – Meh
Learn to Fly – Excellent
Main Offender – Meh
Maps – Good
Mississippi Queen – Good
Next to You – Meh
Orange Crush – Good
Paranoid – Meh
Reptilia – Meh
Run to the Hills – Meh (though it’s great to sing…but too hard on drums)
Sabotage – Good
Say it Ain’t So – Good
Should I Stay or Should I Go – Good
Suffragette City – Good
The Hand that Feeds – Good
Tom Sawyer – Excellent
Train Kept A-Rollin’ – Good
Vasoline – Excellent
Wanted Dead or Alive – Excellent
Wave of Mutilation – Good
Welcome Home – Excellent
When You Were Young – Excellent
Won’t Get Fooled Again – Excellent

The Boston DLC was excellent, the Metallica DLC was excellent, the Black Sabbath DLC was good, The Bowie DLC was good, the Oasis DLC was good, the Jimmy Buffett DLC was surprisingly fun. The only real failures (I think) in Rock Band so far is the Fallout Boy song, and releasing the entire “Doolittle” album by the Pixies as DLC. It’s a fantastic album, but doesn’t really work for Rock band.

Better songs

but worse charts. Guitar Hero 3 was designed to appeal only to the top 10% of GH players.

I am so tired of everyone playing Through the Fire and Flames.

by Mariner John on Aug 22, 2008 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with this.

And I think once GHWT comes out, most people will forget about Rock Band, because all Rock Band really has on GH is the drums and singing, and without it, it shouldn’t be as good. I mean the guitar for Rock Band is a piece of shit compared to the guitar hero one, and the graphics suck, and the songs aren’t nearly as challenging on expert in Rock Band as they are in Guitar Hero (Probably because rock band is a tad bit slower). And the drums for GHWT will be much better too, with the cymbals.

JI/Robert '08!

by Fin on Aug 22, 2008 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure I do.

Rock Band has the wealth of songs that GHIII doesn’t. That’s the biggest advantage.

by Phildopip on Aug 22, 2008 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But GHWT will come with a song creator.

So yea. This may sound dorky, but if there is a song I want to play that isn’t in the game, I look up the song on youtube for someone who probably hacked GH2 and created the song there, so I usually just play along. Disadvantage is I don’t know what notes I missed or my score, but its still fun if you get bored to the same songs.

I’m pretty sure the Big B is playing a Gibson LP, though. What the hell kind of 14 year old has a fucking Gibson?

Upon second look, I think it's an Epi.

It had better be, because if it’s a Gibson it’s a custom and those are like $2500 guitars.

I always thought they looked plastic and cheap

I love how Gibsons look— probably because they remind me of classic era Who or Chris Cornell before he turned into a Justin Timberlake / Michael Bolton hybrid.

Although I like the blackout telelcaster

I always thought Eddie Vedder’s guitar playing sounded best on that guitar.

by JI on Aug 22, 2008 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They look like everything else designed in that period.

And they are more cheaply made than Gibsons, but they’re still solid and take way more of a beating that more expensive guitars. They also sound like nothing else in the world.

Squiers and Epiphones are amazing in their inconsistency.

I’ve played a few Epi SGs that cost a third of what a Gibson SG would cost that sounded a million times better, and I’ve played a few upmarket Epiphones that sounded like they were bought at Target. Same deal (though, in my experience, to a lesser extent) with Squiers.

For $25 at a pawn shop. I suck at guitar — it’s the one friggin’ instrument that’s kicked my ass — but it’s fun to play and sounds like I paid $25 at a pawn shop for it.

It looks cool, though.

by Sec 108 on Aug 22, 2008 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Squiers are usually made in Korea, as are most Epiphones.

Entry level Fenders are made in Korea, mid level Fenders are made in Mexico and upmarket Fenders are (generally) made in the US. Top of the line Epiphones are made at the Gibson factory.

I played punk for 15 years

And I have no idea what it is anymore.

If it was ever a movement then that is dead. If it was raw music that is dead also. Most punk sounds like metal to me these days.

by Sec 108 on Aug 22, 2008 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As a movement, it's been dead since the 70's at least.

As an ideology, it’s still very much alive. As a genre, people call lots of things punk, but I personally think all 14 year olds with musical aspirations should be in either ‘77 style crusty bands, 80’s hardcore bands or Ramones-y pop-punk bands.

Well, it's more about punk being easy to play and not being lame when you sound pissed off.

When 14 year olds try to “push their boundaries” it’s painfully obvious how narrow said boundaries are. Just play fast and loud and yell a lot and you’ll be fine. When you’re older, though, and have a wider range of influences and experience to draw from, it’s not as big a deal.

Those bands are terrible, because their first single is always a bad (but harmless) funny, poppy song.

Then it sells well, and they go “Yes! People like us! Okay, let’s bust out the deeply meaningful navel gazing shit!” And 14 year old girls cry and 14 year old boys put it on before they put the moves on 14 year old girls and they sell millions of records and eventually they have some sort of artistic credibility, simply because they’re able to manipulate the emotions of 14 year olds.

Someone who is talented and could write good music is Paul Simon

Yea, his singing voice wasn’t as great as Garfunkel’s, but he was able to sell records 20-40 years after his Simon and Garfunkel years, which I determined is proof you’re a good songwriter if you could still be popular after going solo.

Probably my favoritest song writer ever.

My favorite album, seriously, is “You’re the One” and it’s not even close.

I’ve listened to that album twice today already, and probably about 7 times this week.

I may sound like an old fogie listening to S&G even though I am 19

But I used to always listen to it as a kid when my dad would play Paul Simon in the concert cd in my car. Going back and listening to it now I can appreciate more how good Paul Simon actually was.

As someone that has been trying to make this case for years

I’d like to advise you that it’s best to just let it go. The Beatles are so universally loved, that I’ve had to adopt a “I know this is weird and it’s probably something wrong with me” stance on the issue.

I'm a relatively recent Beatle convert

I was very, very meh about them until about a year ago, and between Revolver and the White Album, I am now convinced. I don’t think they walk on water, and I certainly have Beatles albums I don’t care for, but damn this is a pretty amazing band at its peak.

Lazy Eye is an awesome song I agree.

Most of today’s music really sucks. It’s all like indie hipster garbage, or rap somewhere in it. Heck, even Chris Cornell is doing hip hop now. I wish I grew up in early to mid 90’s, they didn’t know how good they had it musically back then.

ESPN Page 2 did a feature on the 3 worst all time players from each franchise who was given a full year.

I love this remark about the Mariners:

While it’s been a struggle to find three candidates for some teams, the Mariners have a rich tradition of this sort of ineptitude. In fact, you can put together an entire starting nine and starting rotation of Mariners who had seasons that put them in the running for inclusion.

but they don’t import new cars

New Alfas haven’t come to our country since 1995. Except as of 2008 we get the 8C Competizione, which MSRPs for US$250,000.

In a couple years we are supposed to get regular Alfas back

Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Washingtonhighways.org

by I'm NOT Corco on Aug 22, 2008 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

It was originally announced in 2002 for the ’04 model year. Every year they delayed it until now we finally get the 8C.

The growing Maserati dealership base helps as Alfa and Maserati are both owned by Fiat, but GM selling its stake in Fiat a couple years ago threw a fork in it- they were originally going to sell Alfas alongside Saabs.

But now they are going to probably be bringing the nuovo 500 over in Abarth trim pretty soon which should open things up for Alfa

Yeah, that's the weird thing to me.

I mean, it’s not like Americans came up with ‘soccer’. So why wouldn’t a Anglophile like yourself use the expression? Clearly the aversion to it now is just backlash against A Football. Which just seems silly to me, because they’re so different comparison doesn’t really make sense, and it would be so much easier to just call E football ‘soccer’.
