The Off-Topic Thread of Feigned Amusement (August 20th edition)

Guitar Hero might be saving Rock and Roll but I don't care because I suck at Guitar Hero.

24 in iMac 2.4 gig (refurb)

It’s the base 24 inch iMac, but was only $100 more than a similarly-built 20 inch one due to it being a refurb – it’s like getting an almost-free monitor upgrade.

Yeah, I'm really happy with it

I wasn’t going to spend the money for the 24 inch. The guy at the Apple store even said that for what I was going to use it for, I didn’t need the extra power built into the 24 inch, which is one of the main reasons I am starting to like Apple so much – no upselling! – but he also suggested that if I wanted one to check the refurb site and see what was out there. Glad I did.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Aug 20, 2008 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

It's also good because Apple is known for doing a very good job on their refurbs

plus, IIRC they come with an excellent warranty should anything go wrong with it (which I doubt you’ll have to worry about, but it’s nice to have).

I don't know if you'll know the answer to this question

but when I was asking what the most efficient way to get the data I have on my current XP box over into the Mac was, he suggested using a FireWire cable, which I then bought, only to realize that, of course, my XP box doesn’t have FireWire. Can I use USB to do this?

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Aug 20, 2008 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not sure if using FireWire or USB as a network patch is a smart (or feasible) idea.

I’m guessing the data you want to move over are pictures and documents? If so just run with a USB thumb drive or burn onto a blank DVD.

by BrianL on Aug 20, 2008 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Pictures, docs, music

the biggest thumb drive I have is 4GB, and I have ~85GB to move, so a DVD it shall be. Just out of curiosity, because I know not of these things, what makes you say that using FireWire or USB to move data is not smart or feasible? What are the risks?

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Aug 20, 2008 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

You're probably better off with the thumb drives since a DVD will barely be bigger

and they take forever to burn

External hard drive, then.

If you don’t have one, you should go buy one. It’s nice to have one available.

by BrianL on Aug 20, 2008 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Got one, it's full of music/films so no room to store data.

and I just dropped enough $$ on a new computer that I probably shouldn’t buy a new external HD today. But, we’ll see – I don’t really need to eat this week, and I want my computer up and running…

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

Honestly what I'd do is just purchase a CAT5 crossover cable.

I’ll see if I can find a Fry’s link so I can show you what I’m talking about.

Also, don’t use a regular USB patch cable. That might result in fried components.

by BrianL on Aug 20, 2008 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

USB will work, but it won't be quite as fast as FireWire

I like some Radiohead

I’m not crazy about their more experimental stuff (Kid A, amnesiac, etc). The Bends is a phenomenally great album, OK Computer’s almost as good, and In Rainbows manages to stay on my preferred side the line between wanky experimentalism (for which I have a fairly limited tolerance) and “conventional” rock songs well enough for the most part.

In my extremely anecdotal surveys of my friends, I don’t know of a single one that likes DMB; what that means as far as Radiohead I have no idea. I also have plenty of friends that don’t like Radiohead.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

I think DMB appealed to a very narrow group of folks.

Who are about my age, plus or minus about 2 years. Any older or younger, and they’re almost guaranteed not to like it. I liked a couple albums years ago, but nothing for quite a while now. As for you, given that most of your friends are probably out of my age range, I’m not surprised to hear that no one likes them.

SEems like they're Dead-esque

in that people who love them mostly love them live. I’ve just never seen the point – it’s a bunch of mid-tempo jams that don’t really ever go anywhere interesting, at least to my un-DMB-trained ears.

Best songwriter America has ever produced

and yes, I include Dylan in that. Dylan’s lyrics verge on the inscrutable too much for my taste; I really like Dylan, but the emotions of a lot of his stuff are hidden beneath layers. Springsteen, though, it’s all there on the top – but there are also layers, which makes it that much better.

WARNING WARNING WARNING

That same bill (with Nashville Pussy) played here a month or so ago. I was as excited as you. I was MASSIVELY disappointed with Horton Heat, who I hadn’t seen live in about 10 years.

He’s a full-on Professional Showman now, and his set was almost completely rote, by the numbers, and airless. He played all the songs you’ll want to hear, but none of it with any energy or passion…and the weirdest part was that he did a part of the set where all he did was play one hit from every decade of rock and roll.

While it was interesting to hear them play a Nirvana song, it felt Vegas-revueish.

So, go for the Suckers, stay for two HH songs, then call it good and your 17 year old self won’t be let down.

Also, it’s sad to me that people here were having a discussion of America’s best song writer, and Bob Dylan never came back. Bruce, Paul Simon, and practically every American songwriter that’s mattered over the last 40+ years has modeled themselves off of Mr. Zimmerman.

by katal on Aug 20, 2008 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

No Nebraska was an extremely successful experiment

but Bruce is always at his best with big bands and big arrangements.

by JI on Aug 20, 2008 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

There's so much isolation in much of Bruce's work.

Having a big band / arrangement is often incongruous, while the Nebraska sound emphasizes those themes.

Personally, though, I’m just a big fan of solo acoustic guitars – that’s why I like Nebraska best.

Is it just me, or is this AJ trade looking worse every day?

by The Alaskan on Aug 20, 2008 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Wrong?

Reason to Believe, Open All Night, Mansion on the Hill all sound better in their big band arrangements. Atlantic City, Highway Patrolman, have always sounded better smaller. I think it’s a song by song case.

by JI on Aug 20, 2008 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't comment on that.

Having never heard big band versions of those songs, I’ll just have to assume you don’t know what you’re talking about, rather than proving it to myself.

I had a friend in HS who composed.

He was well educated in classical and jazz, later went on to major in music in college.

I had a friend who, despite me pushing her towards the Hyundai, refused to even entertain the thought of going to a Hyundai dealership because she thought buying a 7 year old Civic was a better deal. She based her opinion off of a mechanic up here who hasn’t seen a new car in about 15 years despite me showing her dozens of published reports saying she was making the stupid buy

I just didn’t get it.

Wow. Just... wow

You know, this poor economy coupled with the gas prices a couple months ago really started “forcing” people to look at Hyundais. it’s funny to see how surprised people are that they actually like the car. As you said, 9k actually will buy you a brand new car, and an extra $1,500 gets you Air Conditioning and an AM/FM CD Player with 3 months of XM Radio. Hard to say no, but I get people that are debating the same as your friend. I had a guy come buy a 4 year old Dodge Stratus with 65,000 for $9,500 miles because his dad told him that Hyundai was “shit.”

Yeah I just didn't get it

She wouldn’t even bother going to the dealership she was so convinced.

The text she sent me was “I just think i’ll have fewer problems with a honda then a hyundai”

to which I said “but you get a 10 year warranty! That means any problems you have are free to repair for 10 years”

her response “I’d rather just not have to take the car into the shop like the honda”

and I said “You are aware that you are knocking on 100,000 miles and there are certain maintenance things that are just going to have to happen to the Civic, right?”

and then she never responded until she told me she bought the Civic

Also $9,500 is a buttload to pay for a 2004 Stratus

And I’m an American car supporter but I’d say in terms of quality a Hyundai is better than that of a Dodge

People just need to get off t heir high horses

It’s not 1985 anymore. There aren’t really many true lemons coming off any dealer lot- any new car you buy is going to be pretty reliable

There’s more to life then Toyota and Honda.

I buy American cars to support American workers

I also believe that in 2008 there isn’t a significant quality difference in the vehicles

But I recognize that Chrysler products in the last few years have been crap- I wouldn’t touch a new one with a 10 foot pole. The ball is in GM’s court right now when it comes to US built cars. 6 years ago it was Chrysler, 10 years ago it was Ford. Today it’s GM

then I'd go with a 1990-1995 Honda or Toyota

In 1990 Hondas and Toyotas were the most reliable passenger cars made hands down.

In 2008 that’s not really the case

Downtown Seattle of all places.

VP means value package, meaning it all manual windows, no cruise control, etc. But it’s a quality car with a pretty decent CD player to boot. It was a showroom car, hence the low amount of miles. It really hadn’t been driven all that much. Best of all (for her), it wasn’t her 10 grand that payed for it.

That car was the schizzle. 100 MPH going uphill over Snoqualmie pass. And getting 40+ mpg doing so…

I’m STILL kicking myself for trading that car in for a Jeep Grand Cherokee…

…which I owned for all of, what, 6 months?

Thankfully the Volvo dealership took it in on a trade for my V70 XC. 2nd-best car I’ve ever owned (next to that Integra).

Hideki Irabu arrested for going berserk in a bar

Story

Irabu, 39, became angered after his credit card was rejected. He then allegedly pushed the bartender against the wall, pulled his hair and smashed at least nine liquor bottles at a bar in Osaka, western Japan, a police official said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

The bartender sustained no injuries. Irabu paid the bill with another credit card.

Xbox announced today that peripherals for Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution

will be cross-compatible.

Welcome to the Party.

Now the question becomes: Do I buy the bundle for Rock Band 2 (my Rock Band drum kit is just about falling apart, and I need another guitar) and buy the Guitar Hero game separate; or do I buy the Guitar Hero bundle, and buy Rock Band 2 separate? Either way, I’ll be rocking out some Jimi Hendrix. I just need to wait for the peripheral reviews before I make my final decision.

Early speculation is that if you own the Rock Band drumkit and are playing Guitar Hero

it will recognize that and compress the drum part. Many people think that since the Guitar Hero drumkit has two cymbals, it will compress to one.

I saw them open for somebody a long time ago and fell in love with them. They sound a lot like Rush, which definitely isn’t a bad thing. Their first 3 albums were their peak, definitely.
