It's hard to explain it to people
-It is almost never worth bunting with any sort of competant hitter up
-It is one worth trading outs for bases in a situation will 1 run WILL win the game
-1st to 2nd almost never helps unless you are bunting with a pitcher
-2nd to 3rd almost never helps unless there 0 outs and a terrible hitter up
-squeezes are good because trading an out for a run is usually an acceptable trade off

Also with Ichiro up behind him.
Ostensibly, you’re bunting the runner over to set up a sac fly. Ichiro isn’t a guy you want trying to hit sac flies. And with Cairo behind him, if Ichiro doesn’t get the runner in, you’re boned.
J.K.L.
by Aaron Campeau on Aug 18, 2008 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Is this possibly Riggles thought process?
Ichiro pounds a lot of balls into the ground and beats them out, with runners on in front of him, they are usually more vulnerable to the fielders choice? And why am I trying to wear Riggles shoes, I’m more likely to blow a fuse than make sense of anything.

I have calmed a lot over the years.
It culminated when I was about 20. A Saints player pulled a typical Saints related bone headed play and I grabbed a metal folding chair and threw it across the room. I made a huge hole in the wall. Ever since that day, I have worked on my inner calm. Strange thing is, I am a total pacifist and a bit of a push over. Only sports and video games can drive me to violent outbursts.

They're getting demolished by the Giants, and Derek Anderson just got hurt.
Not sure how bad it is, though. It’s just an ugly, ugly game.
It's preseason
Unless someone got one of their limbs bent in three, I wouldn’t be too worried about a blowout loss.
He already has made bank...from EAS protein.

Kyle Orton named Bears QB.
Also, Greg Maddux —> Dodgers.
Wait does it boot Kershaw from the rotation?

No
Billingsley
Kershaw
Kuroda
Lowe
Maddux
until Penny comes back.
If it wasn't for college football I'd probably have given up on sports.
The question of course is
what happens if/when Penny is ready to return to the rotation again.
If it wasn't for college football I'd probably have given up on sports.
Maddux is undead. Like Moyer someone should find the phylactery is soul is secured in and destroy him.
Fear the NPE
Moyer is better at this point.

I can't believe they're in the lower half in defensive efficiency.
I always think of them as a great defensive club.
Mike Lamb was their starting 3B, Everett has been injured.
Harris has played much SS

Does Yuni have full citizenship?
If not..tape an application to the ball every fucking time…god he is terrible.
I fucking hate you Mariners
2005 Yuni gets to that without leaving his feet
2006 Yuni gets to that with a half-slide and makes the play
2007 Yuni dives and stops that ball
2008 Yuni misses it by 5 feet
Or signed Milton Bradley...
Or done both and moved Raul to DH.
I believe, at the time of the trade, he was considered a good prospect.
I don’t know much about him, though.
BP listed him as the Sox' No. 4 prospect in the offseason.
Kevin Goldstein:
The Good: A true slugger with tremendous strength and power to all fields, Carter has made great strides in his approach, drawing a good number of walks while greatly reducing his strikeout rate from a year ago. He hits lefties and righties equally well, and has no significant weaknesses against any pitch type.
The Bad: Originally a third baseman, Carter is a poor defender, even at first, and needs to improve his positioning and footwork. He can be guilty at times of trying too hard to muscle up his swing when his natural strength is more than adequate. He’s a below-average runner in terms of both speed and instincts.
Perfect World Projection: Your classic first baseman, a middle-of-the-order run producer.
No.4 this last offseason.
Where has he ranked before? I think I remember reading he was a top 3 at some point in their system. No.4 is close enough, I guess.
This season rocks!

Maybe Washburn is mediocre after all. Maybe you don’t know shit about baseball.
I'm going to the store
Here’s hoping that when I get back it’s still the bottom of the fifth inning. Screw you, Mariners.
Is it weird
that I’m excited Maddux is going to the Dodgers? I’ve been a Maddux fan for a long time so the chance to see his reanimated corpse pitch is pretty neat. Plus I hope he can nurture Kershaw and to a lesser extent Billingsley.
If it wasn't for college football I'd probably have given up on sports.
Yep, good thing we held onto Washburn.
Come on Mariners. Do it. Hire Wayne Krivsky this winter. I dare you.
Innings like this, I like to see Rick Griffith take a walk to the mound.

Holy ghost, I can't wait until we're rid of Bavasi's FA signings.
Washburn and Batista are awful. Hilariously awful, but still awful.
My god, Ibanez
and somehow, Kenji is a better DH option today. yyyyyyep.
Maddux is 10 wins away from the modern record
And he could still pitch 2-3 more seasons after this one.

In other news, B.J. Upton is no longer just the laziest player on the Rays, he may well be the laziest man on the planet.
With tonight’s blunder, his laziness has reached positively legendary status. Aesopian fables will one day be spun around Upton’s indolence. Instead of “The Grasshopper and the Ant,” we’ll have “The Bloomquist and the Beej.”

It would be nice if you included FIP and RA/9. I know you probably don’t want to but if you want to see how big of a difference tRA makes then you need those two at least.

Another tiny thing
pitcher pages have BABIP to four decimals instead of three.
I’d also like to be able to compare team stats. (I know…leaderboards are coming)
I’d also like O-xO on the team pages maybe.
by Edgar for Pres on Aug 18, 2008 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Ok. I can probably fix BABIP
Leaderboards are indeed coming…
And I want O-xO and xR-R on team pages too, as a measurement of defence. We’re working on it.

Small question: You/Matthew always say results based analysis is stupid
but isn’t wOBA results based analysis? Wouldn’t something like PrwOBA (like PrOPS but harder to say!) be better?
