8/18 Drink from the off topic firehose
Possible topics for discussion:
Why do headlines say things like "GRAND CANYON FLOODING" when that'd be nearly apocalyptic in scope if it actually happened?
Michael Phelps has more gold medals than Japan. Can he win the men's dressage, the long jump, and can he be the guy who solves the Russia/Georgia crisis singlehandedly? Or, media overcoverage. Either way.
It's actually not oppressively humid (for the NW, anyway), because of one of the coolest thunderstorms Portland's had since I've lived here. Thunderstorms are awesome.

When I say "humidity"
I don’t mean it in the way they have it down in Louisiana, you understand. “Humidity” here means 30-40, tops, for a couple days, but we’re used to about 5 so it feels ridiculous. I don’t see how people can live where there’s that much humidity for that long.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I spend a lot of time in Louisiana and Tennessee, the humidity never really bothers me.

This is true. It's too early in the morning to think.

Sure beats the desert though.
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
But its a dry heat SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!!!!
I always hate it when people say that. 106 dry degrees is still 106 goddamn degrees.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
At least when it is humid I can still breathe.
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
I'm just the opposite.
I used to spend a fair amount of time in Birmingham AL for work, and whenever it got really humid it was like breathing through a wet sock, and I hated it. At least in the desert I can be motivated to go outside if I have to in the peak of summer, because I know I will be able to breathe.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I hate both.

I was shocked that I couldn't find a good gif of Ankiel's record to post
but, in my looking around, I discovered that Ankiel doesn’t actually hold the record for most wild pitches in a playoff game. Step forward Bert Cunningham. Not in a playoff game, not in the modern era, sure, but still.
Oh, and I wasn’t surprised either.

The Cubs used to be the White Sox, the Cardinals used to be the Browns,
the Braves were the Red Caps (not quite sox I know)
Completely unrelated: the Yankess used to be the Baltimore Orioles and the Orioles used to be the Milwaukee Brewers.

That's what made me read the article, actually.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
While reading that, I was thinking he should do a evaluation on food price hikes.
In one line he crushed he crushed my hopes, but also affirmed my suspicions: Safeco gouges at the food stands. It’s one thing to try to get into the game for the cheapest amount possible, but when you pay more for a hotdog than just getting into the game, that is ridiculous.
I am horrible at re-reading what I wrote.
I usually check as I go word for word, but I don’t go back and look at the overall structure.
So, what Olympic events are you enjoying watching in the non-Phelps division?
I think my favorite so far has been women’s water polo. I’m still not sure what the difference is between a legal and illegal attempted drowning, but it’s been good watching. I have a hard time watching sports that are regularly on TV (like baseball, basketball, etc.), but I am enjoying some of the more obscure sports.
All of them, pretty much
with the exception of dressage, which I just don’t understand why they bother. I think the thing I like most about the Olympics is the athletes – I get so conditioned watching pro baseball/basketball/soccer players, who are so jaded about their skills and about being the best at their discipline, that it’s a really refreshing thing to tune into a women’s 100 meter race and see the woman that won it be so completely elated that she won, even though it was only a heat.
And most Olympians are like that – their medal/good finish is the culmination of a lot of anonymous work, and when they finish on the medal stand they’re just so excited it’s fun to watch.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I think I am done with the Olympics now that Phelps is over with.
I would watch Track & Field, but they are on at such an awkward time.
I don’t care for some of the obscure sports because I don’t think they belong. Table tennis, weightlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, fencing, and equestrian are retarded. We might as well include chess, risk, monopoly, video games, hiking, croquet, rhythmic slip ‘n slip, SAT test taking, etc., in the Olympics. I am not saying these people aren’t talented or athletes, but com’on, some of these events are absolutely ridiculous to be included in the Olympics.
Those all require immense physical skill and training and should be rewarded as thus
Taking a test or playing Risk or Monopoly or Chess requires no physical skill – the only one in question is gaming.

Your tags remind of a guy whose tree got struck by lightning on the news.
He said something like “I hope everyone enjoys their thunder and lightning. Until your tree is hit by it.” It just seemed unnecessarily spiteful. It’s like me saying to a Rays fan “You enjoy your good team until they suck again.”
I love people who get angry at minor inconveniences.
