On the rumors that the Twins were offering Boof Bonser, Washburn said: "If that was the case, how much more do you think you’re going to get? A young guy with a great arm who’s cheap.’’

and FWIW

But I’m [Larry Stone] told by a baseball source with knowledge of the Mariners’ talks with Minnesota that contrary to what has been written elsewhere, Boof Bonser’s name never came up.

Well

at least the Dodgers are in first. And Joe Torre finally has learned how to put his best possible offensive players all in one line up.

Also to make you guys feel worse

in their never ending quest to find a back up for Nomar Garciaparra who won’t kill the team on offense the Dodgers are reportedly looking into trading for Ronnie Belliard.

Surely Yuniesky Betancourt is better than Belliard, Angel Berroa, and Pablo Ozuna!

If the Mariners think Washburn has value

They probably still think Yuni is a gold glover fielder.

The one playing for the Nationals that has all of 6 games in his major league career at shortstop? Not sure how he’d be a suitable backup for Nomar.

It looks bandwagon-ey now, but I was just jumping on the “look at all that fun young talent” bandwagon. I didn’t think they’d actually start winning this soon. I was just hyped that they might finish the season at .500 and be fun to watch.

2K only bought the exclusive third-party rights.

Unless I’m mistaken, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all have the right to create a game with MLB rosters.

by Teej on Aug 15, 2008 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do they?

If that’s the case, fuck you Microsoft.

by BrianL on Aug 15, 2008 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wrong

The exclusivity deal prevents other third party publishers from developing their own MLB titles without paying 2k. It does not prohibit the first party dev studios from developing their own games. Nintendo had a licensed MLB game in development on the Cube that got canceled and Sony has the show. The hot theory was that MS would make their own franchise, but I have a feeling 2k convinced them not too.

If it wasn't for college football I'd probably have given up on sports.

by bluemax on Aug 15, 2008 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But yeah, you’re right. I think 2K might pay a higher-than-normal fee to Microsoft to prevent them from publishing a baseball game.

by Teej on Aug 15, 2008 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Considering 2k Baseball does better on 360

I wouldn’t be surprised by this at all. If MS made a HH clone for the 360 that would probably be the end of the road for 2k and baseball.

This year's 2K baseball was awful.

Glitchiest game I’ve played in ages.

by BrianL on Aug 15, 2008 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it has major problems.

The patch helped the frame rate, but the chugging graphics before and after the game are inexcusably bad.

And the graphics are worse than the year before. It just makes no sense. They had the ball rolling in the right direction with 2K7 and somehow made it uglier.

The pitching is fun, though. That’s what keeps me playing. Using the right stick to pound the bottom of the zone with Felix is a blast.

Larry Stone talked to Lee P earlier.

Brace yourselves.

But he did want to get the point across, again, that the Mariners are not looking for salary dumps, but, rather, talent. That would be their explanation for the hard line they are reputed to be taking in trade negotiations. Obviously, there is a significant portion of fans who believe that the Mariners would be well-served just to get Washburn’s $10 million off the books for next year, regardless of the return. The Mariners clearly disagree, because they just had a golden opportunity to do just that.

Pelekoudas also hinted that there could be a larger trade down the road, one in which the Mariners might even take on salary to get a better player .

One last thing: I clarified the rule regarding putting a player back on waivers after he has been pulled back. That can’t be done for 30 days, it turns out. So in the case of Washburn and Raul Ibanez, the 30 days would put them beyond the Aug. 31 deadline for postseason eligibility. That makes it extremely unlikely either of them will be dealt prior to the offseason.

So we’re stuck with Washburn.

Trading him for less than a big haul would be admitting a mistake.

These country club WASP bastards are blissfully unaware of the very idea that they are even capable of mistakes.
We’ll probably DFA him some time next year when he’s put up Silvaesque numbers and then it will be Jarrod’s fault for not performing.

So if I want to post a link, but just have that short 'link' show up...

Do I hit the link sign in the little toolbar before pasting the link? Before and after? It doesn’t do anything for me when I only hit it once just before pasting the link.

Jesus, we'll score 5 this inning.

And Silva will be bitching his team mates didn’t score 3 more and pick him up.

Thank god for the DP. I'm going to look up stats for the last time the M's had a 20 game loser.

That and the team that had the most 20 game losers. I’m thinking most pitchers that bad don’t get to finish the season. That and teams that lost as many games as the M’s have/will, and finish the season with this many players/pitchers that started the season. Or maybe I should skip it and just swallow a shit ton of anti depressants with my breakfast and pretend I’ve never heard of the M’s.

Soooooo...

Goddamn this team has pissed me off. A coworker just walked up because he noticed that Washburn was still an M, and since I’m the Mariner fan at work, I was tasked with explaining why. I couldn’t form a coherent sentence. Fuke ’em all

BJ Upton's laziness knows no bounds.

B.J. Upton was pulled from Friday’s game for apparently failing to hustle while attempting to beat out a double play.
It’s the second time he’s been benched this week. Upton went out to the field before the inning, but just before Matt Garza had finished tossing his warm-up pitches, manager Joe Maddon sent Justin Ruggiano to replace him. Coincidentally, with two outs in the sixth inning, Ruggiano had a line drive bounce off his glove. It was ruled a hit, ending Garza’s bid for a no-hitter.

And helping turn a bad defense into a less-bad one.

I believe acquiring him is what allowed the Brewers to move Braun off third. Not that Bill Hall is going to win a Gold Glove, but still.

yes, but braun can handle left field

and was historical bad at third. I wouldn’t know how to runt he numbers, but my guess is that is worth several wins.

9 = 8

Yeah, definitely.

It was a huge upgrade just by getting him out there in left. I absolutely loved the Cameron signing, and I had no idea he was going to hit this well, so this is all gravy.
